The narrow gauge train “Mocănița” from Maramures

The narrow gauge train, called Mocănița in Romanian, is a very picturesque and touristic place to visit while you are in Maramures county, one of the most beautiful and picturesque regions in Romania. Being put in use as early as 1930, this narrow train, that only runs in mountainous regions, was used to carry lumber down the mountain. Nowadays, this small, nicely rehabilitated steam engines, have only touristic purposes. The length of the railway is 21,6 km.
To make a trip, you must get to Viseu de Sus railway station, where all the Mocănița trains are located. Then the train takes you up the Vaserului valley, through narrow gorge from time to time. The trip takes several hours, both ways.

This summer I travelled in this train and was a wonderful experience: the train itself, the natural scenery, the folklore shows and also the food offered at the breakfast and lunch stops.
