I have made hundreds of pairs of these slippers through probably 50 plus years. But I was making some again for Christmas and watched your video to see how you sewed them up. Thank you
Fond memories. About a month ago, I was telling my 9 year old granddaughter about these slippers while planning to teach her how to knit. Back in the late 50's or very early 60's, these slippers were the first thing I ever knit. It came in a kit with wooden needles. She is going to start using my original size 10 1/2 wooden needles!
That is so amazing. Your Grandaughter is gonna love and cherish those memories. My mom passed away 7 years ago , and she taught me how to knit at 8 years old. Mind you she always did my cast on and cast off, and finally I am now able to do it alone, but last week I decided to start knitting newborn hats to donate to the NICU in Honour of my daughter Autumn who passed away at 7 weeks old. And I've been knitting everyday since last week and I feel so at peace . And remembering my memories with my Mom. Enjoy knitting with your granddaughter
This pattern was my very first ever lesson in knitting when I was around 10 or 11 years old (about 55 yrs ago!) I learned with the ridges, but later on eliminated them (much more comfortable in my opinion) from the pattern and simply knitted up to the toe part and finished up with the ribbing. I also crocheted a border around the top where the foot goes in; sometimes just single or half double crochet and sometimes a fancier shell around the top. I also crocheted a nice long chain to weave in and out along the top for a "shoestring" to tie to secure the slipper to the foot. The people I gave the slippers to always appreciated that. And sometimes little girls like pompoms on the tops of their slippers, and I have also done that.
Me too! 😊 It was, with a scarf (that I still have), my first knitting too when I was around 3 years old... I was putting pompons on my slippers that were done by maman as my little hands were not agile enough to do pompons... many eons ago 😂 and I am still knitting them today with variants similar to yours... as people and my family always demand them... would I dare putting a number of those I knitted in all my life? Surely not... but it must be an flabbergasting amount. I find that incredible that this simple pattern circumnavigate that long through time.
Thank you so much!!!! As a very new knitter, I did up a modified Granny Slipper last night with a double stranded sole to make it thicker and softer. At the end of the pattern, it said sew it up as usual. Seriously!!! Your demo was a life saver! I'm knitting slippers for the Seaman's Mission in Halifax, Canada. So far, this is the third pattern I have experimented with. I still haven't decided but I certainly am learning a great deal. Have a great day.
Just wondering, did you use worsted yarn? It looks like she is useing bulky or super bulky but the pattern calls for a size 6mm needle so I dont see how great that would work with thick yarn.
@@laciemarie5234 Yes, I use Red Heart Super Saver (RHSS) weight which is a worsted weight. Interestingly, RHSS is so popular in Canada, stores are now selling their own stores brands in direct competition but RHSS has more colors and I still like it better.
@@laciemarie5234 Years ago, I modified the pattern to knit them in a thinner yarn for the summer... it looks very nice... you just have to make a sample, calculate the size on an already done slipper, and knit. Of course, it takes a bit more time but it looks great too :) A pattern of infinite possibilities 🌹
I made these as my first knitting project when I was nine. I'm 80 now and I've made hundreds, over the years. I usuall put a pom pom at the toe to finish them off.
I have made lots of these slippers. I have used two strands of worsted weight yarn instead of the chunky yarn and I also sew them up from the wrong side. They are so easy and a pair can be made in an evening. My grand kids love them.
These are easy to make these slippers. I've made so many of these,, & all of my Grandchildren, & Great-Grandchildren Love them! Thank You So Much for this Slipper Pattern!
I have made 6 pairs so far and making a bunch more for a group that provides gifts at Christmas for seniors who are forgotten about or don't have family
I followed directions, using two strands of the proper weight yarn given in the directions. I have knitted my share of scarves, shawls and beanies and just wanted something quick. My husband requested these. I followed directions for a size L. They turned out enormous. Hubby wears size 12 shoes and these were easily an inch two 'tall' and an inch too long. I am hoping that I can shrink them in the dryer.
You know what... I really tried. I really believe I could but I am just.. so illiterate when it comes to knitting 🥺 Eh, I’m still trying! But this is so helpful! Once I perfect one I’m probably going to make a tonnnnnnnnn more 😂
In the pattern it says "repeat rows 1 and 2 until there are 19 (large size) ridges on right side". I am not sure what you mean by this. Can you give some idea in inches or number of rows please.
My Grandmother made these as do I for last 50 years...the Pompoms are put up near the top at the end of the closing. I found if you thread sew the pompom after the gather and close it will last longer. They however do not last the life of the slipper. I also have put leather soles mine. That is tricky the last pair I added some hot glue with the stitches to insure they hold but you must be precise. At the toe I will bury the tail yarn as I cross close the hole in front. If you don’t darn this you really feel the draft in the cold winter months. I have been wearing these slippersmy whole life. I also have made the crochet pattern and I will actually make two pairs together with the crochet for warmth since crochet is drafty with the crochet stitch..they are nice as well.
Would you be willing to share the crochet version you made for this pattern? Our grandma knit these slippers for the whole family every Christmas, but she has since passed & we’re all so sad not to receive grandma’s slippers this year. I’d love to continue her tradition, but I don’t know how to knit, just crochet. Thank you for your consideration! I hope to hear from you soon. If you would like to share your crochet pattern, you can reach me by email at Beth.Lain@gmail.com. Merry Christmas!🎄
My mother taught me to weave the heal part back up before tying it off do there wasn't a knot being walked on. We always made boss for women and tassles for men.
I got my pattern from Allfreeknitting. There was nothing in the directions about a long tail cast on. Also how do you count the ridges? I used a counter to count rows and the ridge amount is different. It would have been nice if this video also showed how to knit and not just how to take them off the needles. Also the pattern says to use two strands of yarn
I would find a bit of yarn in as close to the original color of the slipper as you can. Darn, stitch, sew however you can, to patch the worn spot. Then add a suede sole to the bottom of the slipper with either fabric glue or stitching. You can add a suede sole to the other slippers as well to preserve them for longer.
Hello, You can find the full written pattern by following this link: www.allfreeknitting.com/Knitted-Slippers/grandmas-simple-knit-slippers The pattern calls for two skeins of yarn, colors of your choice. The video only focuses on the seaming portion of the pattern. Hope this helps!
I didn't find the number of stitches (given in the pattern) very useful. I got the two skeins of chunky yarn and cast on as instructed. I found the slippers were coming out HUGE and ended up pulling out all that knitting and using the smallest number for the width. :'( And I do NOT have small feet. That was 23 stitches. For the length, I just knitted and measured on my foot to see when I should start shaping the toe.
@@gracej6021 Thats what I was thinking as well. I think it calls for a 6mm needle to witch is used for worsted. And would u really need that many sts for a bulky or super yarn? I am trying to find out how many sts for size 6 yarn and size 9 or 10 needles.
When you stitch up, turn project inside out. Also, after bringing needle through stitches on toe area, bring through again. Secures and makes circle hole less obvious. 😊
Those were the ones Granny used to make. There was always a drawer full. They weren't made in 'pairs', and CERTAINLY were NEVER all one color! (well, at least for the Family!) They were utilitarian, and meant to be worn and worn out. They were always made of scraps, a little of this color, a little of that. Brown, yellow, orange, maybe green or red. I sure wish I had a pair now. Love in every stitch!
Don't forget to put something nonslip on the bottom of the slippers. There are several tutorials on You tube listing hot glue and puffy paint to soles you can buy and knit to the bottom. Just be careful of grama and grampa on the hard wood or tile!
The link is under this video. It says link to this pattern. I didn't make them but if you follow the link it will take you to the pattern. My idea was just to put something on the bottom to make them nonslip. Thanks
I don’t understand ! Thought you were going to begin with the start, and all you do is show us the end, when the work is done ? Am I missing something ?!
It would have been nice to get the directions on how to knit the slippers. Demonstrating how to finish the slippers doesn't make much sense without providing information about the pattern.
You didn’t say how many stitches to cast on your just showing your finished article, if you are going to show how to knit say what size needle you use they type of yarn and how many stitches, very poor
I’ve made these before but I love this pattern! Thanks for sharing

Well thank you thank you for sharing this is just brilliant I will be running to the wool shop to start this project very easy and looks so nice
Thank you. My gran thanks you too.❤️
Do you have a list of stitches for each size eg 23 stitches child, 29 stitches small etc
How many yards are needed. I bought 2 skeins of 190 yard will that do. I never bought new yarn so how much was never a problem.
Is there a complete pattern for theses slippers
I’m a nervous new knitter and I’m going to try and do these. I need lots of luck!!
I’m not great at anything.
Do you knit all stitches on the way back8
How many rows do you do for the shoes and for the ribbing and for the back of the slipper
How do you make a video with a completed knitted item?
Where do I get the actual patter please?
Where to get the pattern

How many stitches for a 1 year old please
Hi Mam one request please let me know how many stitches have used Mam please reply
I have 4 plays yarn how many stitches 🙏
A tutorial on how to make these slippers would be awesome.

Joyce Clayton I found a video called, Slippers easy for beginners by Crafty Patti here on TH-cam. You can knit along with her. 🤗
Is there a video to show how to knit the actual slipper?
I wonder if it’s just one strand of yarn… or is it chunky???
Nice work
What sizes are the medium and large please
This is why I'm here too.

hi , When u r using 23 st for smaller slipper are you using the same 6mm needle or smaller and for row 2 are u still doing K9 ??
I have this pattern
Still 6mm
K7 P1 across
Knit one row
Repeat 19 times
Kpkp
Pkpk
Repeat 8times
Where’s the pattern
I use pretty different colors and shapes. I sew them on the sides and top.
Of buttons.
Where is the pattern?
Forgot what do u put on the bottom of slipper so they don't slip ?
Great but can U please mention HOW MANY STITCHES, IS IT 7, 1, 7 1, 7? Olga thanks
There is a link to the pattern under her video
You mentioned you were making that slipper for a child with 23 stitches. What else would I do to make it a small slipper. I really enjoyed your video!
would you do the same way with stripe slippers to?
Also the length for small, medium n large..... size 37,38, 39 thanks OLGA..again
I am going to try these. Do you think I could eventually do them with two layers?
I use two yarns at a time when making these
My mother in law (now 87) made these for her kids and grandkids. One pair has worn out the bottom sole - is there a way to replace that ?
I would find a bit of yarn in as close to the original color of the slipper as you can. Darn, stitch, sew however you can, to patch the worn spot. Then add a suede sole to the bottom of the slipper with either fabric glue or stitching. You can add a suede sole to the other slippers as well to preserve them for longer.
Wat size to cast on for women XL?
What yarn did you use? It’s not 2 strands.

We call that seeing up method mattress stitch
I also have the pattern that goes with this slipper for an additional sole, which makes these slippers extra cushy. Contact me if you would like it.
The video was helpful but when I first started knitting I had to find out where to get to where she started and then I went back to this video.

Looks like she's using #6 yarn? Not sure, but it does look quite think.
