  • A recent family visit has left me exhausted. The whole experience was overwhelming and it’s taking me a long time to recover.
Can you relate? Does socialising tire you out and leave you feeling low?
I’d love to hear your experiences with overwhelm.

It's amazing how neurotypical people would (potentially) be thrilled at close family visiting after 5 years, and us, people in the spectrum, need to prepare mentally and physically for so much time beforehand, and still feel shattered afterwards. This happens to me all the time with my friends & family, let alone strangers.
Kudos for embracing your personality, even though it's extremely hard to drop that mask off. I guess people already have a strong expectation on us, specially when we're diagnosed as adults.
I'm in the process of doing so after finding out I'm autistic (literally last week).

Thanks for the lovely comment. It’s such a challenge. I thought I was recovered from it yesterday and then had a full on day, which ended with my son melting down and I was close to tears again. The world is so tiring!!! I am so looking forward to having my formal assessment, it’s something I hope to do asap. We’re having to pay for our son to be assessed privately due to the ridiculous waiting lists (will be complete soon), so then it’s saving up again for me!!!
Stay strong, you’ll get there. It’s such a relief when you finally discover why you feel the way you do, if not a little scary!!!

I'm not trying to contradict anything you're saying about you and your families experience, but I've had an instance where I inhaled bile from trying to catch my breath after vomiting and I lost my voice for a day.

Thank you for your comment. I totally get why that would cause a sore throat. This was a different situation. It’s happened before when there has been a very stressful situation. Sore throat, followed by vomiting. That time he didn’t lose his voice as he was able to stay in his room and safe space.
