  • In today’s video, we’re going to be unboxing and installing a Rheem water softener. We will be installing this water softener in a pre-plumbed house. Please refer to your manual or local professionals for proper installation and adhere to local codes for installation of your water softener. NOTE: after upload of this video we 3D printed an adapter to add an air gap between our drain hose and drain pipe. We hope you enjoy our DIY!

    I remember washing dishes at my sister house (they had a water softener), and I thought, "When is this dishwashing detergent going to rinse off?" Haha! It's so slippery and smooth, softened water.

    8:46 - getting the cover off. I had the same problem, but was more nervous about forcing it. I swear, there was no clue in the owners manual. Good video! There is no good way to release those tabs. I used a long screw driver to gently pop them loose.

    You should make the stand pipe coming up from the P-trap about 18 inches. Other then that You did a good job. The branch drain for the watersoftener discharge is not identified as to how close it is to another fixture. If there were ever any back up in the branch drain from another fixture the top of the stand pipe should be 18 to 30 inches depending on the height of the P-trap. In normal installations the bottom of the P-trap for the auto washer should be 6" off the 2x4 plate and in in the wall. The P-trap should be of a solid weld configuration. then the auto washer box should be somewhere in the range of about 40' off the floor to the bottom of the box. Your kitchen sink is normally at 36" to flood level rim. The Idea is to be at least above that conditiion. The vent is to be above by 6" but then that is the vent. The auto washer is normally the highest inlet fixture in the home on the floor that it is on. The riser for the inlet to a washing machine or a watersoftener should be to code for the Auto washer or washing machine box. That is 18 to 30". That will also prevent any overflow of the watersoftener discharge onto the floor most of the time. If there is a backup in a part of the building drain system down stream from the softener discharge, you may see a back up in other fixture or in the water softener drain. If the home is newer those problems would be rare. The riser is stated to be at least 18" for a P-trap such as in this case. If someone would suggest other wise then do comment. The tail piece of any fixture shall not exceed 24". The riser for the auto washer shall not exceed 30". There are specific engineering reasons for these heights. Lose of P-trap water level or interity of P-trap seal. If your stand pipe is to short then the pressure of the discharge could cause the P-trap to be evacuated to the point of losing the level of water in the P-trap to maintain a proper seal, as would the velocity of the water dropping more then 24". The tail piece shall not be under 6" also. Just a little further eduction.

    • @ProjectAnonymous_Duo
      @ProjectAnonymous_Duo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! We haven’t found a need to cap off the drain, as the P-trap blocks any smells that would otherwise come through… the drain hoses seem to stay in place with no issues, but we did zip tie them in place to prevent them from coming out of the drain. Hope this helps!

    Great video guys. I have to replace my old water softener. Can that unit be installed outside and is the power cable long?

    • @ProjectAnonymous_Duo
      @ProjectAnonymous_Duo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We found this information online about installing a unit outside, but it may be a good idea to contact them directly with your specific situation. “Occassionaly in warmer climates, the only place to install your new water softener is on the outside of your home. Our units can be installed outdoors, but we recommend the following: When installing your softener, be sure to construct a shelter or covering to block the unit from sun, wind, rain, and other environmental elements. Verify the power cord is also sheltered at the outlet connection.” The power cable is about 7-8 feet long. Thanks for watching!

    i will be doing their 32,000 grain unit, but outside install. Our previous softner was installed outside as well, but my concern is how to protect it. The Home Depot rep said install it on cinder blocks, and as close to the exterior wall as possible. Our installer never connected the drain hose to the drain, just had it hang loose and it just went onto the ground.

      @@ProjectAnonymous_Duo Yes i am fully aware installing this unit outside is NOT a good idea. I have seen another post that someone installed a AO Smith version outside, and asked if he had any issues. But I do know they sell after marked "covers" for water softners. I also contacted Rheem they said the same thing, installation indoors is prefferred, but can go outside if it meets a lot of criteria ...thanks for the reply!

    • @ProjectAnonymous_Duo
      @ProjectAnonymous_Duo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure this is normal, this is your “brine” tank, and should have some water and salt in it to clean out your resin tank… you just want to make sure your overflow hose is connected to a drain and not plugged up.

    Is the unit damaged if it was laying down during transport from store to home? I bought it from a store that already had out of the box. It was laying down for 30 minutes. Has been standing up for 3 days without being installed.

    • @ProjectAnonymous_Duo
      @ProjectAnonymous_Duo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We can’t say for sure if your unit was damaged during transport. We were told if it was laid down the resin beads could mess up the upper part of the unit and possibly end up in your water. We suggest contacting Rheem or where you purchased it so they could best advise you on what to do. Thanks for watching!

      rheemwatertreatment.zendesk.com: "You'll be prompted to add three gallons of water to the salt tank during initial installation. From there, your unit will regulate the water level for you, at a steady 2-4 inches in the bottom of the tank. During a recharge, the tank will fill with water and then drain that water back down to 2-4 inches."

    One other thing. secure the drain tubes in the riser coming from the P-trap. You're water softener is in the garage so it might be a better Idea to put the overflow for the brine tank to the floor instead of in the drain. If there ever is a problem with the brine tank level, you may not know it. You're water heater T&P should be plumbed to the floor of the garage also. If the water heater is in the building then the T&P should be extended to the outside of the building. Those problems are to be seen if there is an occurrence. The garage floor will not be damaged from overflow drainage or temprature and pressure discharge; and also is visual as to the possibility of issues that are in need of being addressed. The expansion tank was installed in a strange place also.. The expansion tank is for the waterheater specifically. It is to be installed near or at the cold water supply to the water heater. Not on the building potable water supply.
