      Awesome! I’m happy you got something from the video. I’m probably like many other people out there and I have actual questions about a process or Serta in step, and exactly like you said , other videos just gloss over things. My goal was to actually show the process and show anywhere I got hung up on because I know others could too. Thank you for watching my video 🤙🏼

    Thanks. Your video saved me $600. I had epoxy installed on in my garage & had to remove my softener. When I called the plumbing company, they wanted $600 to remove it & install it back 2 days later. Your video helped me do it myself & save $600. Thanks man!

      Man that’s awesome to hear! I’m happy you got it done and saved that money. That’s a great feeling. I know they have to charge some for travel time there and back and the probably few minutes or an hour of their time, but $600 is a little much for just uninstall and reinstall. That’s cool you got it done yourself.

    You're right about the instructions at the beginning not telling you to leave the outlet closed during that System Startup. It only says to open the outlet to let it flow back in the house at the end of the instructions on step 5. I'm sure many others like me started it by reading one step at a time. 😅 LOL
    Thankfully I was also watching your video while doing this and shut off the outlet valve at the 5 minute mark after starting it.
    I do have one tip I'd like to mention.
    For anyone setting this up for the first time. Make sure to secure that drain line. When my unit kicked on that drain line shot up out of my floor drain and sprayed water all over the place. 😂

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      lol oh no. Yes good information. You should have that drain like secured for sure. I didn’t realize how much pressure that small line would have. If you don’t have it clamped or secured with a connector of some sort you should definitely make sure it is.
      And yes the instructions could be a little better though through for people following along. Thank you for finding my video and watching. I appreciate it. Happy I could be of some help.

    Just installed this system, this video was extremely helpful. Ended up having to go with 3/4” to 1” from my wall to pre filter and then on to softener. Got shark bites with 45* elbows with threaded male ends on them. Lines connected directly. They had 3/4 to 1” lines at ace hardware for $20. Did the replacement/install this afternoon, it’s working like a charm.

      Your very welcome. And I know exactly what your talking about. My first time having someone come by from a installation company they quoted me first around $6k. Then talking them down to something like $2.3k. Still pretty crazy. That’s one of the reasons I do a lot of DIY installations, it’s because I’m motivated by the savings I can have. I can actually afford to have some of those nice things by doing it myself, and not having to be charged or overcharged in some cases. It’s a lot of things that we can do ourselves if we just had a little bit of information. And nowadays with TH-cam and Minnie, good channels out there it’s really easy to find that information in Build that confidence.

    One of the best and easiest videos on doing this type of setup. Thanks for the great video! I'm about to cut the cord on my monthly water exchange service and you have given me a lot of useful info. I think I have the same type hookup as yours (one clear flex line going into the house and two copper water lines that attach to the tank). I think my copper lines are smaller than yours. My system also seems to be looped together atm. Looks like I need to do some cutting and making sure I get the right shark bites for my application. Otherwise, you have given me some confidence!

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s awesome. It’s definitely something you can do yourself. And cutting the pipes and putting the fittings on is probably the easiest part. If you know the pipe size ahead of time, you can obviously have the fittings in hand and ready to go. But you could also take the loop that you cut out to the local hardware store and compare it to the right fitting as well. Most commonly houses have a 1 inch line. In my case it was one and a quarter. A little bit more common in newer builds but just depends on where you live. And who your builder is. But it’s all very doable.

      @@FortKnoxCo I just found a small scrap piece of copper pipe that was on the floor near where the hookup is and it seems to be 3/4" ID. Off of one of the pipes, there seems to be a small ball type valve that can be turned open (for aux water...maybe like to wash cars, etc?). Anyway, I'm guessing that would denote it being the "out" side. Now to get a parts list and the courage to tackle this job. Thanks for your reply and help.

    Well ladies and gentleman I just got my water softener installed Saturday.
    I used shark bites I ended up making bypass just in case if I ever have to service water softener yes I do know water softener does have by pass but if you have to replace or get water softener serviced I don’t have to shut my water off.
    Make sure all of the shark bites have rubber o rings installed inside. One of my shut off valves did not have rubber o ring installed I had leak when I try turning water On.
    Before you cut measure twice maybe even three times lol.
    I was able to by pass one out of three faucets going outside.
    So when I water garden I’m not using soft water.

      @FortKnoxCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this system came with the sediment particle filter as well. I didn’t install it in this video. But I did install it in another house. Usually they run it before the system so that it catches anything large coming from your city supply. But I’ve also seen people install it afterwards. In case anything from the filtering tank, makes its way through. Either way, it’s just another added layer of filtration and a big plus.

    Only one question, do you fill the unit up before plugging in it and pressing cycle button?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No. Not on this model, it doesn’t ask you to refill the tank and then secure the top. With whole home systems that have a tank that has carbon mater inside they usually tell you to flush or fill the tank to “activate” the Charcoal. But with a water softener tank with resin inside it doesn’t require it.
      Once you turn the system on and open up the water flow it will fill on its own

    Thanks for the video, really helpful, quick question, what you recommend for plastic pipes, I heard I can't use shark bite because of the water pressure, what you recommend for that type of pipe?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s awesome thank you. As far as shark bites go if you ask any professional plumber, they’re obviously going to say negative things about them, but technically they are rated for plumbing. Very similar to almost any other type of push on fittings. It has a mechanism inside to secure the pipe whether it’s plastic or copper or PVC. Professional plumbers are always going to advise against it because they simply say that there’s potential for failure, yet at the same time, I know plenty of people who have had soldered copper pipes and they have failed and had leaks, and unfortunately were inside walls and it caused tons of damage. so hypothetically have a failure, but these things are engineered and sold with licensed scenes and patents to be able to be approved in usage.
      As far as being rated for pressure, I have never had that problem before, either way I always recommend that if you’re going to install a push on fitting, use them in places that you can see or have access to that way if there ever was a failure you could easily see it and correct it. I wouldn’t usually put a press on fitting inside of a wall and seal it up , just somewhere that you could get an eye on it for whatever reason.
      I’ve personally used press on fittings in different applications and have never had one fail. Just my personal experience.
      As far as other types, I prefer PEX A, expansion fittings, since they are the newer technology and have tons of positive aspects. PEX B I would stay away from since the fittings and joints are more restrictive than the internal diameter of the pipe itself. So with multiple joints, you reduce the amount of water pressure through the whole entire circuit. With the fittings and joints are true internal diameter and they don’t restrict water flow throughout the circuit.

    Thanks, this is super helpful. When I started the system to run the regeneration cycle, the drain line was running water for the whole time, around 1.5 hours. Is that expected? I feel this wastes too much water. In the future, would it run water from the drain line every time it regenerates? Thanks!

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      In the set up it will run for that long time to get the system filled and flushed. So it’s a lot longer. But when it does it’s cycle it will pull water from the brine tank and then flush out the resin tank once the salt water has cleaned out. It flushes through that line to the drain but does need to do this to discard the filtered/dirty water. I don’t believe it’s as long as the set up flushing though. These systems are supposed to be more water efficient because it only flushed when it’s needed and met the countdown of how many gallons have been filtered, so it’s important to set it up with the calculation the provide in the book based off your system size and house size. But other systems just run on a schedule and that can cause it to flush regularly and more often when not needed, wasting water.

At the very end you brought up something I may have messed up and wanted to double check if I need to redo the regen cycle. After starting it for the first time and it goes through the first process (bw?) I thought it meant to open both valves on the tank (was reading instructions not watching video at this point) so after a couple of minutes of it running with both valves open I saw the last bit of your video and ran back to shut off the valve to the house (out valve?) on top of the tank…. Then I sat back for a few more minutes and remembered I had installed bybass valves in case I needed to take remove the water softener and still need water to the house, needless to say I shut of the bybass’s as well but only a couple of minute remained on the bw cycle. I’m wondering if I need to restart the whole cycle now 🤦🏽‍♂️

Just to get piece of mind. When I did the water hardness test it just reconfirmed that it was working and I could sleep easy.

It was leaking water when I opened the Inlet valve. Pulling the whole fitting out really saved me some head scratching. I used the Sharkbite supply lines connecting to 3/4 copper. Really hoping I wont regret that. Anyone out there had any issues with those? Thank you for putting this video together.

      Awesome you got it done. Yeah there’s always a few troubleshooting along the way but we get it done. I’ve never had a problem with shark bites. That type of connection is commonly found in many places. Even on the water softener, lots of stuff nowadays has push in connections.
      Rule of thumb I always say is if your going to use them in places that you can see or are exposed then go for it. You’ll know if it’s failing and can address it easily. Don’t use shark bite connections in places that are covered or concealed like inside walls and attics.

My question is when you’re running a back wash cycle for the first time, I forgot to close the outlet valve from the softener to the house for like 10 minutes not realizing it at first that it needed to stay on bypass for an hour+. Will that cause any issues to the system or will it be fine for that short amount of time that it was on for?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It shouldn’t cause any problems. As the system runs it should work properly. That’s just the initial set up and fill/flush. It’s usually to just get water/air/small particles flushed through so you can start using the system. It won’t have any affect on the function of your system.

    Sharkbites are like magic. Like any fitting I didn't trust it until I tried to remove it. You can hang a silverback gorilla off a properly seated sharkbite and it won't come off. You need to depress the release to get it off and then it pops off no problem. I'm sure they can fail, any fitting can fail, but they are the real deal.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. Any fitting can fail. The shark bites are rated and approved fittings, I always just say install them where you can see them so if they ever leak you can catch it and replace it. But I’ve also seen “properly “ sweated copper joints in walls fail plenty of times…. Don’t know where the naysayers about copper sweated joints were on those ones. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s awesome. I’d look again and see if there’s anything next to or near that loop that could be a drain. It almost goes hand-in-hand to put that loop there and also include a drain. Those loops are only for water softeners and they know that they need a drain. So my guess would be that they would’ve put one in. But then again builders do weird things. I would also look to see where your nearest drain is. If you don’t have a drain or sink in the garage obviously that’s not an option. But think about what is on the other side of the wall or nearby walls. In our case I know my drain goes into the adjacent wall right behind where are laundry room is. The washer and dryer have a drain in the wall there. That’s where this line that I have in my house actually goes up into the wall and down into that. So you may be able to do something like that where you have to put your own drain line in and it could be a short run over to the nearest drain in the wall like a bathroom or laundry room or kitchen sink possibly.

    Great Video! I have a couple questions. 1. I am replacing an existing unit. Where the unit is in the basement while the brine tank is on the main floor in the garage. Will I experience any issues with the distance between the 2 or with the brine tank being higher than the unit?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t know if the difference in elevation between the two will make a big difference. I believe the unit has a suction and pressure to push and pull the water in and out of the tank. Because it’s a hard plastic line I don’t believe there would be any difficulty in the pressure required to travel up or down. I’ve just never seen the Brian tank be in a separate location then the softener. If you’re able to put the salt tank next to the system, I would say do that, and you could keep everything all together. But if you have to have them in those separate locations then it may just be what it is. The only thing I could see being a factor is the distance that the water hast to travel to and from the brine tank. but again as long as it’s not excessive I don’t see how that would be a problem.

I have a closet I could install it in will I need to or should I put some reinforcement in the floor because of the extra weight? Thanks

    • @FortKnoxCo

      You can install this unit inside if you’d like. It’s not too heavy. Their. Bigger unit 64,000 grain filter system says it only weights 149lbs. So if installing on a floor I wouldn’t worry so much about the weight. Most people install out in a garage or separate space because that’s where their easy water line access is and when the system is regenerating it makes noise. Not too loud in my opinion. But you wouldn’t want it running next to your head while trying to watch a movie.

      If your home doesn’t have a softener water loop at all… you’ll have to add one. This isn’t too complicated but might require a plumber to come out if your a beginner. But you can have a loop placed into your main water supply that comes into your home and have the plumber just finish the loop with two 1” male ends and a shut off valve while their at it and then you can connect your own water softener system and still save thousands.

      This system has a single tank because it’s just a water softener. It has a single tank with a resin matter that scrubs the hardness/minerals from the water only.
      The whole home filtration systems usually have two large tanks, one filled with a carbon matter that filters the water to a drinking quality, and the second tank has the resin matter for the water softening feature.
      So there’s a difference in the actual system when there is one tank or two. Water softener only or “whole home” filtration which is filtered and softened water.

    I hate written directions. This video made installing this tank super simple and straightforward 👍

    Hey, wondering if there are instructions on how to remove the head from the valves. I soldered the copper to the the system but the o ring looks like it was pinched between the control unit. Thanks for the help.
    *Realized that once you unhook the connector you can slowly pull it apart with no issue.

      I’m not quite sure what your saying happened. Are you wanting to disconnect the head unit from the tank or trying to pull the whole tank and head unit away from the wall connection with the in and out line soldered ? The valves disconnect as a pair from the back of the head unit by removing the two screws and plate clamps. In the installation process and assembly of the head unit the back valves arrive detached. You have to push the valves into the back of the head unit and secure them with a couple screws. You could reverse this process and pull the head unit and tank away and leave the two in/out valves still connected to the wall.

    Great video! When installing any line with a rubber gasket/seal, Teflon tape is not needed.

    Hey man, awesome video and explanation. I just have a question, my water loop is 3/4" PVC. Is it the same process to cut the two ends of the PVC and kind of glue in an adapter with 3/4" male thread so a hose threads on, or still use a shark bite hose on that end?

      If your water lines are actual PVC then you could glue an adapter with the male threads and accomplish the same thing. I’d just check and make sure it’s pvc and not a type of PEX. You have a couple options either way. I’ve usually only seen copper or PEX. But I believe the shark bites will connect to all 3 types.
      If you do go the male thread pvc ends just be careful with the pvc threads. They are easy to cross thread and you’ll know cuz it’ll be leaking.
