    I cut down an SD1 gearbox mount and welded flat plates acxross the tops to bolt onto the existing (1976 auto) gearbox mounting points. (back in the 1990s sometime) Fit just fine.

    Just the vid I wanted to see! I have a 1974 3500S here in Oz ordered new by an Australian living in the UK (back then) from the factory through the personal export delivery scheme. I have its full history from day one, when it was ordered, when it was built and picked up by the customer from the factory (he brought it home in 1976). The interesting thing is this S was built on the assembly line using an auto base unit, so it has the wider trans tunnel. This type of build was not uncommon apparently, when S base units were in short supply, the assembly workers had a kit to use on these base units to make it into an S. This has been confirmed by James Taylor and a P6 club in the UK (I've seen another of these 'converted' cars 4 sale on Car & Classic a few years ago, I wonder how any were built?). I have an LT77 5-speed gearbox so from what I've learnt over the years it will be slightly easier install than if it was a factory 3500S...?

      Yes the auto tunnel is bigger making it an easier fit, so you have best of both worlds bigger tunnel but you don’t need to swap the pedal box to fit a clutch pedal

    5:07 I don't think an LT77 can cope with the torque of a 4.6 anyway. (mine did not last long behind my 4.6). The very latest D suffix box might just about be OK but I doubt it. An R380 box would be a better option in this case but you need to make sure that its not from a van because first gear will be way too short. All of these boxes are heavy and ancient anyway. A 'world class' T5 box is much better but it's a fair amount of work to get one to fit, I'm sure there are other strong boxes that will fit.

    Wow thats an excellent video, I've just bought a tr7/8 gearbox to go in my Humber sceptre mk3, I converted it years ago and put a post 4 speed Box in , you sir have just made my life so much easier, I just need to shorten my remote by about 6 inches, is that a thing you can do for me ... pretty please 😀 😊

      im afraid my alloy/tig welding skills are not upto much so i couldnt do it for you, but it wouldnt be a difficult job for a competent welder/fabricator. Another option is find a shorter remote from a Sherpa van, or perhaps a tvr

      @@PenguinMotors cheers for your honesty, I've put a shout out on the rover V8 forum for shorter one but they are rare to find, I will find someone local , great video content, as always 👍 😉

    How much roughly does a lt77 cost to buy and fit? Looking for a P6 at the moment but hadn't considered that the Auto might actually be the one to go for if swapping to the lt77, useful info!

    • @PenguinMotors
      @PenguinMotors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LT77 seem to go for about £500 which is great if it’s a good one, but a bad one might cost you £800 to rebuild. Yes it fits the tunnel much easier, but that is off set by needing to find and fit a manual pedal box and master cylinder assembly which is a bit of a faff as it doesnot quite bolt straight in and require a bit of drilling and fettling. Point to note 4 cyl and v8 clutch master linkage/master assemblies are different.

    • @PenguinMotors
      @PenguinMotors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yzfdunc yes i have. your budget will get you a nice car, if you dont do it your self you would have to bank on £1500-2k to convert a car to 5 speed. Theres nothing wrong with 4 speed cars, but once you have driven 5 speed ones you really do notice not having a 5th gear. in fact i think Autos are better in that respect , the auto box is quieter than a 4 speed so it seems less revy on the move. One thing you have to ask is how many miles are you going to do in it? if its only a few then to me the cost of fitting a a 5 speed doesn't make sense

    I have a question, can I convert a manual to automatic in a P6 V8? without welding on the tunnel, because these are wider then manual type. Thanks

    A very odd gearbox to choose today.............. Expensive, rare and a dreadful change quality............... Instead use Mazda or Toyota. Conversions available for both.......... Much cheaper and a much better result...................

    • @PenguinMotors
      @PenguinMotors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I dont think so, its almost a bolt in conversion with factory parts. All the ones i have driven actually had quite a good gear change and worked well. a lot of purists will tolerate a later rover box, but would hate the idea of a toyota or mazda box. im not saying what box anyone should fit, just answering a lot of questions im commonly asked :)
