    Gassers are based on closed body production models from the 1930s to mid-1960s, which have been stripped of extraneous weight and jacked up using a beam axle or tubular axle to provide better weight distribution on acceleration (beam axles are also lighter than an independent front suspension), though a raised stock front suspension is common as well.

    I could watch these guys all day. Something about the old school style - more intriguing than newer cars.

    This reminds me so much of National Speedway on Long island. From 1967 ->1973 my brother and raced a 67 Chevlle, 327ci/350 hp. Great times back then!! Thank you for this great video!!

    Meltdown Drag used to have a catch phrase "for the guys that get it" reading the comments it's clear very few 'Get It'. Just so folks understand what going on at this even I offer a quick explanation:: Dragracing from the early 60's was vastly different from what we know today. This particular event (Uncle Sam's Pie Eating Contest) require 'Pie Crust' slicks, no modern wrinkle wall, No burnout and no prep track. Several different Classes of car participated. Stock, SuperStock, Altered, FED and Gas sedan/coupe. BTW, Not all 'Gassers' had solid/tube axles and jacked up in front. It was not required for the class. in the early 60's drivers did not do burnouts, there wasn't even a burnout box or water box. Some of the higher class cars like S/S, A/G - AA/G and A/FX did dry hops to figure the best RPM to launch at, they weren't think burnout to heat tires. If the ET's seem 'slow' it's because the tires sucked and traction was a big issue back 'in the day'. Sit back, relax, open your mind and enjoy an fairly accurate exhibition of early drag racing at a great event.

    Drag racing at its roots! Awesome.
    I always loved the Meltdowns, but every car doing a burnout takes time. No burnout/prep moves things along at a nice pace. Great video!👍

    Thanks, I remember in the early 60's we could run "time only" for very cheap just to see what our cars would do. The only safety item I had to install was a seatbelt.

    Let me say this, I was born in 1945, so I was up front and personal with this. If any of you have ever seen the movie American Graffiti, the cars were exactly what were available in every city across the country. Drag racing from light to light, sometimes a bit farther, went to the strip every weekend almost. The greatest time in America muscle cars, period.

    No track prep....So i guess I'm out. I didn't see any blown cars. I do run Firestone Dragsters and hook pretty good at Beech Bend but if Byron is like Eagle Field then its a smoke fest the whole track. I do see them feather and pedal but i wont hook. And with that said i answered my own question.

    5:30 Twelve and a half @ 75mph in a multi-carb Hemi slingshot rail? What's wrong with this picture? Humidity and heat too high? Track is up hill? Elevation is 24,000 feet? Gas is from Mexico? A pair of gloves wedged under the "GO!" pedal? Somebody please explain!

      These cars are used for historical purpose and not driven hard. The last thing an owner of one these wants is to wreck it.
      Is there a rule someone came with that says you have to beat on your car at all times ? No.

      It was also a good example of having a quicker reaction time won the race, the 12:50 Hemi car was going 75.69, and the 12:64 six banger car was going 106.71, the faster car took longer to get to the finish line.

    • @philsmidwestclassiccars150
      @philsmidwestclassiccars150 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yamaha, these are small block Hemi's which are very highly sough after & worth a lot of money (small blocks with very high compression ratio's). They really are old skool replicas of the late 50's & early 60's. They are what they call H.A.M. & race in clubs through out the country, please Google them & check them out sometime so you can me a little more knowledgeable of them. They are not OLD Skool which means the way they were many years ago.

    • @bigredc222
      @bigredc222 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I looked up H.A.M. all I got was humid air motor, it's something about making a diesel run cleaner, I found 340/360 Hemi conversion kits, is that what you're talking about?

      That's how it was back in the day nobody was running $5,000 cylinder heads or $40,000 race engines. Pro stockers in the sixties cost $4000. In 1962 I saw two of the best factory Super Stock drivers Dyno Don and Arnie Beshwick face off in 409 Chevy and a 421 Pontiac and the winner was running 13.2. You kiddies don't read much does ya?
