It was incredible to see a new star at the time knock it out of the park on his sophomore album, as a lot of artists peak was their debut (50 Cent, DMX, Snoop Dog, Nas, etc). The orchestral production, incredible lyrics, dope features. But the crazy thing is, we never knew how consistently great and improved he would end up being…
Nas didn’t peak at Illmatic. He rapped even better in the It Was Written era
DMX put out back to back smashes in the same year he doesn’t belong here

i can easily tear up to hey mama. this is ye's most underrated album in his discog imo. a lot of his other albums are much 'louder' i guess which can overshine this gem of an album

A few things for you.
Heard Em Say: that ending Calypso drum piece feels a lot to me like a tribute/homage to the Grover Washington Jr/Bill Withers classic "Just The Two Of Us" that has a similar ending portion.
Drive Slow: this samples Hank Crawford's classic "Wildflower" which has been sampled a few times before. The second verse that you loved was Houston legend Paul Wall, and the ending piece of this, being slowed down, was a tribute to DJ Screw who popularized the Chopped N Screwd sound that Texas was famous for.
Roses: you're right about Kanye's musical knowledge - that Bill Withers sample is an unreleased demo Bill did acoustically just him and a piano. That Kanye managed to make all of that out of just a voice and a piano is crazy.
Addiction: just go listen to the original Etta James song, it's incredibly famous and just so good.
Diamonds From Sierra Leone (Remix): first, this is a sample of Shirley Basset's classic James Bond theme song "Diamonds Are Forever". This remix is sort of the true version, the original was just Kanye comparing the diamond hand symbol that Roc A Fella Records members would throw up to a real diamond. He later found out a out blood diamonds and had a bit of a crisis about it so he wrote a new verse. At the same time, Roc A Fella was going through a major change too, as original co-founder Dame Dash was ousted after he and Jay Z fell out which is what Jay's entire verse is about.
We Major: Nas's line at the end of his verse, "I'm Jesse Jackson on the balcony when King got killed" is such a dope line. If you look at the pics from when MLK was shot you see a young Reverend Jesse Jackson up there on the balcony with him when it happened. Nas is saying that he survived the violence of the 90s that left so many rappers dead (2pac/Biggie/Big L etc) and is still a legend beyond that. Also, Tony Williams singing on this track is Kanye's cousin. Put out some good music himself. And Jon Brion (on the keys) is actually the co producer of this album. He's a composer and musician and Kanye tapped his skill because he wanted a more orchestral, grand, lush sound for this album.
