Jason McGerr does not get the recognition he deserves. His drum parts are never obvious, yet the always enhance the song. Much respect. He is a huge part of what makes DCFC so good

I was an English honors kid from 6th grade up and never really cared about it until I signed up for a creative writing class in 9th grade, and it opened up a whole world in literature that I never really knew existed! ...and you are so right, DCFC is a creative writing genius and it's so amazing just to listen to the poetic nature of his songs. You could put this song on paper and it would read just like a Frost poem.
I am also worried, however, that today's youth do not have the literary or vocabulary skills that us pre-internet'ers do, and that poetry and creative writing in large will die with us. The material coming out now from the young generation is not very promising and I believe it has a lot to do with online or phone texting, lack of reading books, autucorrect spelling features, and the slang they use has handicapped their vernacular so greatly that their vocabulary is very limited...which destroys their reading comprehension of older language. 🫤

    • @shawfestify
      @shawfestify 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

you need not fear for this generation’s literature output. Pessimism about the next generation harkens back to granny telling us Elvis was the devil’s music, doesn’t it? My daughter and her husband are the best parents I’ve ever met, and they have both written books, and taught literature at the university level. They each have several close friends who are just as successful, and well-read. I’m only the outlier in internet comments-in real life (IRL, as those darn kids say today) I think my friends and I agree that the next generation are good, more kind than ours-don’t call each other homophobic and racial slurs that some of us grew up hearing. If we’d stop electing retired 75 & 80 year olds to lead our nation we will leave a better legacy for democracy to inherit. I know this much is true.

    Lyrics
There is whiskey in the water
And there is death upon the vine
There is fear in the eyes of your father
And there is "Yours" and there is "Mine"
There is a desert veiled in pavement
And there's a city of seven hills
And all our debris flows to the ocean
To meet again, I hope it will
    How could something so fair
    Be so cruel
    When this black sun revolved
    Around you!
There is an answer in a question
And there is hope within despair
And there is beauty in a failure,
And there are depths beyond compare
There is a role of a lifetime
And there's a song yet to be sung
And there's a dumpster in the driveway
Of all the plans that came undone
    How could something so fair
    Be so cruel
    When this black sun revolved
    Around you!
    How could something so fair
    Be so cruel
    When this black sun revolved
    Around you!
There is whiskey in the water
And there is death upon the vine
And there is grace within forgiveness
But it's so hard for me to find
    How could something so fair
    Be so cruel
    When this black sun revolved
    Around you!
    How could something so fair
    Be so cruel
    When this black sun revolved
    Around you!

It's nice to see that Ben holds no ill will towards Zooey. ;)
Sucks that Ben had to go through that divorce. On the flip side, I'm selfishly looking forward to the art that comes from that pain. It feels like the more that I enjoy this album, the more guilty that I'm going to feel, because I'm taking pleasure in someone else's real life pain. Thanks DCFC, you've made me a monster. =)

Suddenly I am thinking that "death upon the vine" is a reference to "Grapevine Fires" which was released in 2008, the year Ben & Zooey were engaged. Which is a fairly depressing thought considering it contains the lines "And we watched the plumes paint the sky gray; And she laughed and danced through the field of graves; There I knew it would be alright; That everything would be alright,"
Also, the title of the album is Kintsugi, which is the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

    • @ShokingSource

Grapevine Fires isn't a depressing song at all. It has depressing elements but the whole point of it is that even when the whole world goes to shit and chaos, he just wants her by his side and things like death aren't scary anymore because she's with him. So beautiful. All his music is beautifully written poetry, I can't wait for this album to be released! #SADCORE.

veloxStrix I get that the song is about him and Zooey. but how does the video fit in to that theme? does the stuntman represent him and the woman that gets into the car after the burly dude hits him supposed to be zooey?

    • @epic124
      @epic124 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

countrymadness The video shoot is the "Black Sun" that "revolves" around "something so fair" (the young actress i.e. Zooey Deschenal). It represents her TV career. In the video, the making of "Black Sun" results in the stunt man (representing Gibbard) getting hit by a car three times just so the director can get her shot right.
It's saying that ZD's TV career was the "Black Sun" that revolved around her and that destroyed her relationship with Gibbard.

So, I've watched this a few times trying to figure out what it means. I'm thinking the car symbolizes a girl (probably Zoe) which causes the stunt actor a lot of pain because he cant get the scene right so he is forced to repeatedly take the pain, doing the same thing over and over again. Which basically means that being in a relationship with her has caused a lot of pain, something that he keeps subjecting himself to and perhaps willingly accepts thinking he might, one day get it right...how could something so fair be so cruel?

"How could something so fair become so cruel", "There is"yours" and there is "mine"", and "There's a dumpster in the driveway of all the plans that came undone". To me, this song is all about divorce. My interpretation may be jaded as I just went through a very painful divorce recently myself - but there's some real pain in this song.
If rumor and scuttlebutt is to be believed, Ben and Zooey's divorce was a bit less than amicable. But I guess nobody knows that but them. Just my buck-o-five.

    • @laurenandmia
      @laurenandmia 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

But what I want to know is, why does the video make you so sure that it's about Zooey? I didn't get much more meaning out of this video that would hint to it (other than this having actors in it) vs just the story the lyrics alone told.
(but enough of that I love this song)

He's got excellent taste, must be raised well & genetically has great aesthetics. I'm 57, and this is one of my favorite contemporary bands. I try to stay current, because I'm not going to just listen only to the old songs I grew up with, and think nobody's worth listening to these days. There are many superb bands, with great songs, with lovely melodies, fine musicianship, and thoughtful and meaningful lyrics. Like Death Cab, and Radiohead, and the Decemberists (I saw them live this summer, excellent), the Shins, Sufjan Stevens, Muse, The National, to name just a few, there are so many good ones I like. I think if you love music, it's good to stay open to what's out there, and not just hide & listen only to the old stuff.
