A lot of times, maybe most times, in French the final consonant is silent ("toit"="twa", roof; "chaud"="sho", warm), but if you put an "e" after it (making it a feminine adjective) then the consonant gets pronounced (but the "e" doesn't!). So for instance "chaude" sounds something like "showed" and means "warm" referring to a feminine noun. The "e" at the end gets its own pronunciation as an "-ay" only if it has an accent mark over it. That "-ay" ending looks like -é if it's masculine or -ée if it's feminiine, like in our borrowed words fiancé (the man) and fiancée (the woman), which sound exactly the same. The -é/-ée ending in French is the equivalent to our -ed ending in English, so fiancé/fiancée mean "betrothed, engaged."
