In my final year of High School in Australia, I went on a school service trip to Cambodia, and part of the trip was visiting S21 and the killings fields in our first week. Our tour guide who we had for the first four days of the trip, whose name was PK, was a great guy who was happy and cheerful the entirety of the time we had him.
His uplifting and spirited behavior even continued when we were at S21, however once we entered the prison block with the room full of photos of victims, his demeanor changed. Passing into one of the rooms, he abruptly stopped talking to us and began to gaze at one of the pictures. Shorty after looking at this particular photo of someone, he began to talk again, albeit through broken words and quiet sobbing.
Our tour guide, PK, was a prisoner of S21, and one of the photos on the wall was a picture of his cousin who had been killed right in front of him during this time. After he moved on we all quickly looked at this photo (and many of the other photos were of a similar nature). This body, starved, abused, mutilated, void of any humanity left. Every bone in his body was tightly wrapped around dirty and punctured skin. Hundreds of bodies covered in scars, bruises, and marks of violence. The atmosphere of our entire group was utterly traumatized for the rest of the week and I still think back to the sound of him crying.
Once back on our bus, he further explained that he survived due to his ability to fix the typewriters that the prison guards and other members of the Khmer Rouge used. As such, they kept him alive until eventually he escaped from S21 when Vietnam invaded.
Another couple of details to add to the killing fields: towards the right side of the main memorial are a set of sugar palm trees. PK told us that Khmer Rouge soldiers would collect these leaves and slash victims throats (as their leaves are very sharp), amongst many other methods of killing via blunt force trauma or knives as a means to save on ammunition.
As briefly seen at 38:30, almost every skull had coloured stickers on specific locations of the skull to denote a range of info from the age of the victim to the method of their death, to even the number of times they were attacked. It would also be an understatement to say that many skulls had numerous stickers on them, indicating that they were attacked several times by several different methods of force.
Thank you very much Spanian for publishing this video in such a professional, considerate and informative manner. Watching this brought back many memories of my trip in Cambodia, including all the people that I met over there.

My grandpa was a soldier for the khmer army and fought against the khmer rouge. My dad and grandma would go around flipping over dead bodies looking for grandpa. By the grace of god they were reunited. They were taken to a refugee camp, where my moms family was too, in thailand. My parents didnt know eachother at this time. By luck both parents were flown to the same city Oakland, Ca where they finally met and had me and my sister. Im so fucking thankful im alive right now. My grandpa is still alive at 95 today.

Well said, Spanian. I visited in 2022, found the most devastating part was that the prisoners were told they were going home when they were driven out of the prison, so they left with a smile. Little did they know, they were being taken to the killing field. This led to all the other prisoners also thinking they too would get to go 'home'' one day. RIP to all lives lost.

They sponsored a couple man and women who ran away from Cambodia as the man was in the Khmer rouge but rebelled and got shot ... They made it over the Thailand border and eventually made it to Australia ... Their family born in Thailand raised in Australia and years later i met their eldest daughter ... Only to realise the the same Cambodian family i went to school with sponsored her parents ... We have been married for almost 15 years with 3 gorgeous children ... ❤️‍🔥🙏🏽

Cambodians are still some of the nicest people you will meet anywhere ever!

“The only difference between being uninformed and misinformed is that one is your choice and the other is theirs”
This world is controlled by the worst of humans, they think they’re necessary..
The Khmer is just one chapter and flavour how many chapters never recorded?…

It's so important for online personalities to release videos like this and show this side of humanity. I strongly believe that in order to enjoy life and what it has to offer it's important to visit places like this to understand where humanity has been and what it's capable of.
I visited Auchwitz and had the exact same reaction as Spanian did here... Going into it I had read everything about it, watched every documentary and film that you could think of. But nothing prepares you for the physical experience of going to a place like this. Actually being there and sitting with it - taking in the surroundings and trying to possibly understand how such atrocities could happen.

This video gave me straight chill. Been subbed to you for awhile now. Never seen you cry. To have that empathy and emotion over this situation really makes this one of those videos you have to watch a few times to truly get the full picture of everything that’s going on. Lots of respect for you brother!!!

Brother Spanian that was a powerful up mate. You reading the rules of the prison, your reaction to it was as authentic and as real as it gets. no one will be surprised at your empathy for the victims either nor you ability to uncover these tragic stories. Says everything right there man.
The deep depths of depravity that we are capablle of doing to each other is mindblowing. Knowing this is possible puts us all on guard. All in the name of an idea that on the surface made sense.
You showed your vulnerability and humanity here and everyone thanks you for being you.
    Kindest Regards,
    History

I went to Cambodia first in 1999. There were still piles of skulls on certain road intersections. Every person over the age of 40 had a look in their eyes that was haunting; they'd all been, in one way or another, deeply affected and intertwined in Pol Pots genocide. I went again in 2009 and the 'financial' improvements (thus the average human beings life) had improved. But yes m8, it's a brutal very recent history. It's harsh. It makes you wonder how Palestine/Israel will be in 5, 10, 15 years time....??? peace.

I visited the killing fields in 2017 I could not believe I was a young woman in my 20’s enjoying life and this was going on. I was the oldest person there. Good to see interest and awareness from younger generations around the world. Glad I went it’s very sympathetically done even though horrific. I made my own way around with headphones telling the story. I really did enjoy my time in Cambodia in particular a half day motorbike tour which took us to a Buddhist compound where we were blessed by one of the monks.and local villages and a local fresh food market. Our guide told us about being a young boy after this genocide. He was eating anything he could find in the ground. Certainly changes your perspectives about life.

In highschool in Aus we had to read First They Killed My Father. Written by a survivor of the Pol Pot regime which started and ended before she even turned 10. Most of her family were killed. It broke my heart a million times over and I have never forgotten her story.
