- PRINCE has a new album! WELCOME 2 AMERICA is the first offering from his estate since his death. Today we are listening to the title track on the album WELCOME 2 AMERICA and a classic and one of the best songs of all time KISS.

Point of clarification: Prince didn't write those songs for Chaka Khan and Sinead O'Connor. They were covers of previously recorded songs that Prince wrote. A minor distinction, but an important one IMHO. "I Feel For You" was from his second, self-titled album, and "Nothing Compares 2 You" was included on the sole album by a group called The Family, which was essentially a replacement for The Time, which Prince disbanded when Morris Day left. The other artists that the hosts mentioned were, in fact, whom Prince specifically wrote songs for.
Danni's story was so iconic I was enthralled. Thanks y'all this is always such a joy to watch!!

Manic Monday by The Bangles had the number 2 spot on the list in 1986. Kiss was number 1. Both songs written, Produced and arranged by Prince (He has his own original version, released in 2018). Pure Genius.

Every story you hear about Prince is more surreal than the last. The dude existed on a whole different level.
I like this series so much because it shows many aspects of reaction, there’s the segment where I get to see everybody react to things as they hear them, I get to hear their opinions on cultural and social aspects of the respective artist as well as what they think about creative decisions made in the process of making the song and then the technical breakdowns and storytelling “sections” fill out the episode and bring variety to the viewing experience. By the way I would love to watch an episode about George Michael, Lizzo, HAIM or Earth, Wind & Fire. Thanks for making such enjoyable content!
There's actually a lot going on in Kiss, even though it sounds sparse and airy and is basically a blues progression. For something on paper that is quite traditional, the way this track was created and produced was/is amazing. I saw Prince on the love sexy tour about 30 years ago and I would still rate it as one of the most amazing gigs I have been too. Halfway through, most of the band moved and played another band members instrument, why? - because they could! Such musicianship.
I also love the fact that Prince would tease you with a sprinkling of funky/dirty guitar parts in many of his tunes - as in Kiss. Always left me wanting more.

Kiss is a strong and as the same time a "simple" product of high creativity. It is what people in management call effective "differentiation". One of the greatest musical ideas in history of pop music.

Yeah, that was my first thought when they were talking about that part. There are several more minutes of the song, and they're great. Every Prince 12" is a masterpiece. Don't even get me started on Computer Blue or Mountains.

Hey Jack, I really like your point about being able to boil down the mix to keep only the needed elements... The band Morphine has this down to a science in my opinion... They create almost an overwhelming sound stage with drums, a 2 string bass and a saxophone... It would be incredible if you and your team could break down their song "Buena"... THX

Let's not forget the impact Wendy Melvoin had on Prince and his music. She is a fantastic guitar player, the one who opens Purple rain, and Kiss too. Prince was himself an awesome guitar player who was inspired by Wendy's talent, and I'm sure they both inspired each other.
6:50 the bit that that he wanted to be the most prolific song writer as opposed to the best is just nonsense...
and KISS: Prince wrote it and recorded the first verse on the spot when asked for a song for the side project "Maserati." It was almost a country song with an acoustic guitar. The band was was a Funk/Rock band and they had no idea what to do with it. They worked on it over night and when Prince heard it... he took it back! Most of the production credit --including the use of the gait--should go to David Rivkin and Brown Mark...
David Z is credited as arranger, which is fair. About the ´most prolific x best´: Prince was a perfectionist, but at the same time, he had a huge urge to get the ideas out of his head. He usually worked pretty fast and released many things that even fans (like me) consider filler.
I dont think this channel did the right thing choosing ´Welcome 2 America´ because it´s not a traditional song. It´s mostly a intro speech. If they had to choose something from this album, ´Born 2 die´ would have been a lot better
Prince finalized the song in 4 hours, just the time that Maserati were out for dinner.
Loved this! Prince is my absolute all time favorite. The rest of the welcome 2 america album is actually really good. And yesssss KISS is one of my favorite songs of all time too, super inspiring as a producer and songwriter! Great stuff everyone!

I can't say enough how much I love the Welcome 2 America album. A coworker gave me this record last Christmas and the vinyl has been spinning ever sense. The title track is freaking amazing, but you gotta listen to the whole thing. "Born 2 Die" is just a badass funk/soul song kinda feels like a Blaxploitation track from the 70's, and then following that ya got "1000 Light Years from Here" which hits a whole nother funk bone (it's pristine and very poppy)... I could go on and on, but just know that every song on this record counts and you'll get lotsa variation from track to track. Of course, it's all Prince and the amazing musicians he surrounds himself with, so you can't go wrong!
I'd love to see and hear you guys do a breakdown of the two singles from the "1999" album that nobody talks about. Because "1999" had four singles which got music videos, the best known are the title track and "Little Red Corvette"
But the other two "Let's pretend we're married" and "Automatic" are every bit as good and although all four music videos were shot on the same sound stage (And very likely on the same day) they couldn't be more different from the other.
And that's something Prince was an absolute master in doing. All four singles came from the same album, had matching videos but were so totally different.
You guys have created a fantastic channel. This is such a relief and breath of fresh air after hearing all the amateurs react to music, most of whom offer little more than, "That was a banger." Oh, and please react to more Prince!! (And I love the mini-lessons on music - very helpful!)
After Prince's death i became to know him through TH-cam. And i became so obsessed with his live shows. Can you consider doing a video on his liveshows. And these videos are so warm and lovely

Prine stated in the interview (the View) that the music that was stored away with someday be release, but not by him. These are his words. And he is one of the greatest writers of all time, not only for himself for many others. He didn't want to be the best writer? But the most prolific? Don't make sense, 😒 wow
Mad respect for Prince, and for you guys as musicians as well, but the thought of some assholes profiting off of a musician's depth of unreleased songs after their death.....is beyond despicable...Prince isnt the first musician this has happened to, and certainly not the last either.....Its only about the $$$$$$$. The fact that he had SLAVE on his forehead way back, and the lyrics to this song, is not lost on the sheer irony of this "newly" released material......Prince was a consummate producer, and would have shuddered at the thought of this being let out to the public having been "finished" by another asshole, who was being paid by a bigger asshole. This is a critique on the establishment, not on any of you btw.......
Total Prince fan! But I would like to see yor Sade reaction. My take on her/them: If they play a note it’s supposed to be there. If they don’t - it fills no purpose. Basslines are fairly ”simple”, but powerful. You hear one bar and always start singing the right lyrics. 😎 Ultra cool! Classy!
Awesome Jack and friends. I remember very well when this song came out, I remember the feeling. It sounded completely different and extreme in comparison to anything released in that period. For example, dry vocals were the exact opposite of super 80s big reverbs… It sounded so modern, ahead of times, that I thought that we were not prepared to listen to music arranged that way.Another Prince song shook everyone a little after: Sign O Times. Electronic music was associated with fast, happy, funny, simple music. But that song was an electronic dark song, with crude lyrics, and the video was one of the first done exclusively with lyrics in big letters scrolling…. Something we are still doing nowadays.
Thanks for this, I really enjoyed listening to you. The wah synth at the end of Kiss is the intro to the 12 inch which really takes the song to a whole other dimension. It's a must-listen if you've not heard it before. Incidentally, I have listened to Prince for years and years and always hear something new, especially when listening with headphones. That's what makes Prince so amazing - his music is so deeply and intrinsically layered. On the surface level, Kiss sounds like a throwaway pop song, but there really is so much more to it than that. I suggest listening to the intro of Condition Of The Heart on headphones. It is S U B L I M E.

Prince wrote "Nothing Compares 2 U" for a group called The Family (comprised of former members of The Revolution and The Time) who recorded/released the song in 1985, well before Sinade O'Connor recorded her cover... Also, Prince didn't write "I Feel For You" FOR Chaka Kahn... Chaka Kahn recorded a cover of the song (which originally appeared on Prince's 2nd album "Prince" in 1979) in the mid-80s...
You have to listen to the Last Poets. There are the absolute masters of this kind of spoken-word tracks and Prince is definitely inspired by them here.

You all said that KISS blew your minds and set the stage for your sound. For me it was Doves Cry! When the guitar comes in it grabs your attention, then this drum beat you have never heard before Native African Call Drum Sound), THEN, this almost concurring yell, like his own Tarzan call after defeating a lion, and in the background of that, this sharp guitar underneath the yell and the up front guitar almost like footsteps bring you to the first lyric. "Dig If You Will! The opening steals your attention, and forces you to follow him through this story. It changed what I listen for in music.

Recording entire albums was Prince's version of sketching thoughts on a napkin. He was more than anyone.
Correction I For You, Nothin Compares 2U were recorded/released(not as singles) on his previous albums. Those songs were re-recorded versions and became big hits for them. He also wrote songs under various pseudonyms.

Very interesting y'all talking about having parts that likely were recorded and later cut. Just yesterday Cory Wong posted a video with Michael Nelson (former horn arranger and trombone player for Prince) and they were talking about just that. He said he would always record stuff that would get deleted rather than the other way around.

He's my #1 fav. This album was disappointing overall - but I really enjoyed "1000 Light Years From Here" the most. "Hot Summer" seemed like a poor man's "Hot Wit U." I wonder if he was going to retouch any of the songs later or just keep them in the vault.

Based on what we know as Prince's publicly released body of work, Coming 2 America does feel unrefined. That being said, getting to experience Prince's artistry and genius when he's "just" experimenting is like getting a peek at unused documentary footage, which I really like. (Oh, to be in the room while it happened...)
Also, IMHO, there are a LOT of songs released or that get radio play that can't compete with an "experimental" track by Prince.
Prince and George Clinton did a collaboration- ‘Brother Can You Paradigm.’ Not sure when it came out- ran across it by accident a few months ago looking up Clinton’s ‘Cosmic Slop’- the movie, not the album. Amazing!
People misunderstand Prince's large output. There's a reason why he didn't release a lot of his material. He would flesh out his sketches and dabblings to full-length songs, but that's what a lot of them are. Mere sketches. And that's not a slight. It's a testament to Prince's talent that he had higher standards than his fan bois.
(That said, Wonderful Ass and Vibrator are two of my favorites.)
Purple Rain and Kiss; was into when both were out, now it seems all that is known about Prince after his murder is these tracks along with the cut of 1999, Prince has an lot of music , there is an lot to Welcome To America, his last album before his murder Hit n Run two; was Funk music masterpiece

I can't believe no one mentioned in Kiss how the hi hat exactly mimics the synth part in the verse like as if they were midi linked. Jack mentioned the syth as eighth notes but missed this point which i never realized until now.
it's gated acoustic guitar, so it is linked, just not via midi.
Seriously appreciate the education I am getting in music and production which I think really heightens the experience of listening to these classics and new stuff too. I’d love to see you all do an old tune which you can draw a line of influence directly to a new tune.

This is why this racist American system cuts back on music programs, music teachers are not teaching students how to read music and instrument programs are defunct in predominately Blact school districts. This song reminds me of The Stylistics "People Make The World Go Round." Very poignant & haunting, which makes you listen even harder.
I loved her story. Living in the same small Minneapolis suburb as Prince, where Paisley Park was, you would hear stories just like that about his parties. He would invite his fans to come and chill while he played on his piano till 4 in the morning. And sometimes other celebrities would be there, like Madonna. The last party he did like that was just a couple months before he died, and friends of mine used to go all the time, they invited my husband and I to come with, but I couldn’t go. I really wish I had. But to witness such talent… he was really one of a kind.

Stylistically, I always felt like KISS was a pop version of a song he did called Horny Toad.
You guys need to analise 'When Will You Be Mine' by the Average White Band (please). I think we all would love to here your thoughts on the funkyness of it and how wonderfully the instruments weave between each other in this song. I'm probably the only one out there asking this because it's not such a well known song, unfortunately, but it funks like the funkiest!
