    I have an OLED E6, bought new end of year 2016. Amazing screen, but maybe a bit too early technology wise, even more for their anti-burn-in features or lack of. I knew about that risk when I bought it, so I'm not complaining. I have enjoyed that screens for years, consuming amazing contents, so no regrets.
    6 years later, I have a few burn-in spots. First the subtitles area, since it's white most of the time, I can see a matrix of 8 digit segments all over the place down there. Also the Netflix logo in the bottom right corner, my red pixels are almost all dead over there (Netflix should propose a no logo option for those embedded app, same for the others...). Now I'm not looking for something in the app anymore, but instead on my cell, and send it to the TV. I have also the time progress bar for I think TH-cam and most likely also Netflix strip ghosting my screen, left to right.
    I'm writing all of that, not to shout foul at LG or anyone, but more to share a true experience and maybe help other preparing better themselves. My TV has around 11000 hours of loyal services and I'm still happy about it despite those side-effects and will probably buy another OLED to replace it.

      My CX which I use as a monitor has 11,500 hours on it, mostly productivity and no burn in. But I also keep the backlight at 40 and the display in SDR mode when not gaming, which drastically lowers the peak brightness, and I suspect... drastically reduces the rate at which the pixels decay.
      But I think they have also added more burn-in prevention features and increased the size of the red subpixel between when our displays were produced.

    I think part of the reason why Samsung went with the micro-HDMI and mini-DP is port orientation. Dell's version of the monitor has the ports vertical to the monitor along the bottom edge (they plug in parallel to the panel). That gives them a lot more space to put in the full-size ports, which are both wider and deeper. The Samsung monitor has the ports on the rear face, and the depth of the monitor is quite limited there.

    I think one reason Samsung might have done the micro connectors is that it semi-forces people to use their included connectors instead of ones they already have. I am a recent glossy convert due to my 48CX. Honestly, I remember glossy monitors being a nightmare back in the day and constantly having to battle sunlight by putting blankets and things over the windows (didn't know about blackout curtains back then) if I wanted to use my computer during the day.
      It was only thanks to the allure of OLED I was willing to give glossy another shot, and figured I would just buy blackout curtains or whatever, but surprisingly reflections haven't been an issue. I think due to advancements in brightness, anti-reflective coatings and polarizers etc. glossy screens look a lot better and don't have nearly the drawbacks that they used to. Granted I am also using one of the highest end displays on the market. So I have no idea if the experience transfers to midrange and budget displays.
      I suspect a lot of people are like me and so scarred from trying to use crappy glossy monitors in poorly light controlled rooms that they just completely wrote them off. Probably going to be a long uphill battle for manufacturers to convince people to want glossy monitors. Because even though I am now a convert, if I had the option to buy a matte OLED at the time, I would have taken it in a heartbeat.

      I use my pc for a couple like 2hrs a day and on weekends maybe up to 5hrs when playing games.
      I was using a oled tv for about a year, i initially noticed the screen is nowhere as bright as it used to be, when it was new I used to be comfortable with it on 100% brightness and it would still be visible during the day with curtains opened, after about a year it was just not being enough and colors where also not as good, then i noticed burnin on white loading screens or on videos when there is a White background or maybe explosion. When i noticed it even if it was a small amount it really drove me mad. I started looking out for it and i saw it all the time and it made using my pc annoying as i started turning of the monitor when i leave even to go to the bathroom for one second, i really hate hiding the windows taskbar but i did so to avoid more burn in i just couldn't take it anymore.I even noticed it on my OnePlus phone. I bought a neo g7 43" to replace my main screen and i downgraded my OnePlus 8 to a realme x3 superzoom, oled has left a bad taste in my mouth and i really dislike it. Yeah when it's new it's a 10/10 but already after a year it's not a 10/10 anymore, i rather get a lcd with miniled which will be a 8/10 or 9/10 forever untill i decide to upgrade or it breaks for other reasons. Not because the pixels are dying slowly. I hate oled, already upgraded my phone 3 times because of burn in and not because I actually needed to upgrade.
      And to be honest my lg oled looked better when new but after just a year it looks worse than any standard lcd. Really a 10/10 that goes down to a 6/10 in a year of use is not worth it for me over a 9/10 which remains a 9/10 forever

    I think I heard that the LG OLED monitors are using their new MLA (micro lens array) technology to focus the light output and increase brightness, which could also increase their cost relative to TVs. Also just speculating, but there are fixed costs to manufacturing that will not scale with panel size like cutting and handling the panels, power delivery etc. No idea what percentage of the total cost these make up but just another potential reason. The monitors also hit 240Hz vs 120Hz on the TVs which must involve other changes that increase cost.

    I would posit that there's a chance that these two actually pair _very badly_ together.
    If it's not qd-oled you aren't just turning on and off the backlight, you're turning on and off the color too, which might introduce overshoot/undershoot issues.

  • @iPain3G
    @iPain3G ปีที่แล้ว +64

    For 540Hz you need under 1.8ms average. I don't think that any classical paneltech can achieve those extremly low responsetimes on average. I think the clarity between a 240Hz Oled and the 540TN would be more or less the same but the picturequality will be way way better on the 240Hz Oled. Picturequality matters even in an eSport enviroment. It is way easier to see someone when the colors pop more. A TN picture is often to flat to get a good colorseperation which results in a worse visability overall.
    Oled also feels way more responsive as any TN, VA or IPS panel i've ever tested. The ultrafast 240Hz and 360Hz feel worse than an 120Hz Oled.
    Oled feels more like the old tube monitors but with better colors :D
    I think even an eSport pro will choose the 240Hz Oled over the 540Hz TN when he/she has the choise.

    • @Your_Paramour
      @Your_Paramour ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A very well tuned TN panel could reach 1.8ms average, and don't forget this is meant to be a brand new panel. Maybe the panel will struggle to get 1.8ms across the refresh rate range, but realistically it only really needs perform well at it's maximum refresh rate since it's only really for a handful of esports titles. I think there is close to zero chance we will be seeing any of these 240hz oled monitors being used in esports tournaments (at least in csgo). The real battle will be whether or not the new 540hz panel gets adopted over the XL2566K with it's 360hz Dyac, and I would guess that 360hz dyac will be marginally sharper than 540hz sample and hold. Zowie also has the massive advantage of being the encumbant in the esports space, both amongst tournament organisers and players.

    Integer scaling looks terrible in my view, nothing like running the resolution natively even when considering 1080p on a UHD display. The edges of objects become blocky, it does not look good up close at all. It works well for certain titles with 'simple' cartoony graphics or if you're sitting far enough from the monitor that the edges aren't well-defined. But it makes many games look like they have Minecraft edges when they shouldn't. It isn't a feature I miss being added to monitors to be honest - maybe nice as an option for some to use I suppose.

I never had any of the issues I have on this screen (vrr flicker at various refresh rates, on/off vrr control toggle that allegedly increases input lag but fixes this issue, vrr range only going down to ~80hz). To be fair some of these issues are purely the fault of the screen itself and not really due to lack of a G-sync module, but my LG C1 also has some flickering at the lower end of the VRR range, and the vrr range only goes down to ~43hz (which is surprisingly annoying because I've found I can tolerate 40fps for some games, but LFC just doesn't cut it for me). Glossy always wins as no crystal effect, better sharpness and more contrast as matte panels catches any photons in the room covering all with matte reflections. While you can add antireflective coating on glossy screen (same coating as on the lens) you cannot do this with matte screens. The problem is that majority of users still thinks that matte screens "reflects less", while in reality it is the opposite.

      And I would argue the further the distance of the matte laminate the worse the effects are, so it should really be as close as possible to the pixel and therefore they should default to matte.
      As for the "majority of users" statement, in reality its not an opposite they diffuse light that hits the surface reducing the peak brightness of a light source viewed as a reflection, which is what you want. The issue of brightness with OLEDs and BFI (black frame insertion) becomes less of a problem at higher refresh rates and duty cycles. While it may not be possible to achieve the same MPRT as with strobed LCDs, MPRT can be made adjustable, allowing for a reasonable blur reduction with OLED BFI without a significant decrease in brightness. With adjustable MPRT, users can choose the balance between blur and brightness. Crosstalk is not a problem with OLEDs as they do not "strobe" like LCD backlights, but instead use a pixel-on and pixel-off pass to adjust the scanwindow size thus changing mprt. OLEDs have more potential for motion clarity, particularly at higher refresh rates, where LCDs are hindered by crosstalk.

      On glossy the colours also pop more and bright highlights are higher in detail for example when looking into the sun or sky in games. Matte quality loss is noticeable, Don't get why it's used for OLED's you have per pixel illumination yet it's covered in vegetable grease on top it all.

    I've had the G8 OLED 10 weeks, the monitor is awesome. The ports are no problem. It comes with a display port to mini display port cable. You can also buy a decent hdmi 2.1 adaptor for a few £s from amazon. All old cables you have work just fine, I'm using mine, no need to change your cables at all. I believe the ports were chosen to keep the panel slim at the back without having a bit of plastic protruding out. Honestly the input ports have made no issue to my use. @@martinfodor2848 I definitely do look after my screens and take a few extra precautions. I autohide the taskbar and hide all desktop icons. I use roundedtb to take away the annoying white line left with windows 11 when autohiding the taskbar. I use wallpaper engine and have about 20/30 moving wallpapers set up to change every 2 minutes. I have my brightness set to between 5/8 for desktop / internet browsing. With the montiors inbuilt game mode feature on, windows sees it as a different screen, it keeps the settings you enable for each when switching between both. In game mode I have HDR on and the brightness set to about 35ish. When I'm done gaming I switch it back off to change the settings back to no HDR, lower brightness etc. If I leave my montior for an extended period of time I turn it off and turn it back on when I sit down, same for my 65in S95B too. I don't hide any in game stuff though, I enjoy games the way they're supposed to be. My set up is running off of a 4090 via 2x hdmi cables. I know there is a small risk burn in can happen, for me I'd rather take that risk. With the precautions I take, I don't fear screen burn, but, if it does happen, it happens. Once you go OLED you can't go back, it's just so much better.

    What I don't understand about this new hype for OLED monitors in 2023 is that as you mentioned in the video, OLED technology, no matter how much prevention it has, still has a risk of burn in. I just saw the new G8 Oled in a Samsung store and it's all burned. I have thrown away 3 OLED TVs, which were amazing, but didn't last more than 2 years, and now I see that all the new monitors are OLED or QD OLED that also manifest this problem. Burnin's guarantee is not the solution, since it is respected in few countries. Their business is that you change the monitor every two years. If you leave a static image with red or yellow, it burns very quickly. I ended up buying a 4k IPS monitor for this reason. I can't compare the image quality with an oled, but I also don't want to live paranoid taking care of a monitor (as I did with TVs)

    Because at the end of the day, they're not going to include it if people don't ask for it. And you are one of the few that can be a voice for consumers here.
    And it works the other way too. You can talk about it more and make more consumers aware of it, and why it's important, so hopefully we'll see more demand for it over time.
    But yeah, it really does make a huge difference. I have one of the few (only?) OLEDs that support it: the Gigabyte Aorus FO48U. It only does it at 120hz, but it's better than nothing. And with Special K, and can enable software BFI in combination with hardware BFI to achieve a de facto 60hz BFI as well, which is great for locked 60fps games.
    Honestly, if I had the option, I'd use black frame insertion WAY more than Freesync. But it's not really viable even on my monitor because sometimes I'd rather run at a frame rate between 60 and 120, instead of a fully locked 60 or a fully locked 120fps.

    My friend owns an Odyssey G7 27" which he uses with an NVIDIA GPU, but the VRR range *starts* from 80Hz and that's not very good. My friend says (I didn't see for myself) that it feels bad and weird.
    If he would have used an AMD GPU then the VRR range would have started from 60Hz which is better but not the best. And still he sees flickering sometimes.
