Yes, carry-on only does sound like a great idea, but it may not be practical for trips where one or more of the following circumstances will apply: packing for a cold climate or for multiple climate changes; packing special occasion outfits that you may not want to cram into a carry-on; packing items that may not be allowed in a carry-on. My friend has suggested that I can go carry-on only for an upcoming trip, but I will be checking a bag because at least two of the above circumstances will apply to me, and I will be taking extra precautions to prevent it from becoming lost and to increase the chance that it can be returned to me if it is lost, which can easily be looked up online. You can also buy an airtag and place it inside your checked luggage to track it..

Airplane manufacturers build planes with big holds because they know most of us like to take stuff when we go on holiday. The real issue for me is why it often takes longer for the checked bag to travel the few hundred yards from the plane to the carousel, than it took the plane to travel hundreds of miles
