  • In this video we examine the impact of pornography on romance, intimacy and social development. There has been a sharp decline in relationship satisfaction and partnerships in general. Many young people are opting out all together. This is due to many factors, but a primary cause is the exposure to graphic, hyper-stimulating, taboo material found on the internet.

I agree its like a drug but its NOT a matter of "just say no". Just look how well that "worked" regarding drugs. Sure, you can always personally do that but, there is no avoiding its consequences entirely for most ppl most of the time. We'll do anything but just admit to our own damn selves that despite ANY & ALL laws, the "illegal" drug trade IS a significant proportion of the global economy & therefore isn't going anywhere, EVER. The same is true here. The ONLY optimal solution in ALL such cases is acceptance that it exists, & maximizing EDU about it & help resources & such. Like Bret, I am surprised that this conversation hasn't already begun, far & wide that is. The old "Us Vs. Them" distraction is still working like a champ.

Most critiques of porn are the Christian "SEX IS OF THE DEVIL" pseudo-moralistic posturing. We need to understand that what's at fault here isn't the sexy part; it's that it's commodified. I work in a high school with students who are at risk of dropping out, and I’ve definitely noticed a lot of these cultural shifts that have happened in how people are relating to one another, and even themselves. A couple of weeks ago a student was preparing for finals. She became frustrated and was like “whatever, I’m just going to become a stripper.” I mean no disrespect to people in that profession, but I’m worried that young women feel that is where all of their worth lies. I’m nearly 10 years older than most of the students I work with, and I was definitely taught to be well rounded and apply myself in school, sports, and other activities. But a lot of the teenagers I work with are getting the message that those things don’t matter. With so much emphasis being on social media and one of the top careers young people aspire towards being an influencer, a lot of them are getting the message that what matters most is how they look and what their online presence reflects. I see all of the students as multifaceted individuals who are capable of more than selling products- or themselves- online. More messages like the ones reflected in this video need to be online to reinforce that. So, thank you for this content! And to all of the gen z people who might see this post, I want you to know that you are so much more than your appearance , and you deserve love and genuine human connection.

Shame would fix it, but people over here tend to go overboard with that stuff. Like sex has nothing to do with sex. Who knew? Lots of people! They just don't talk about it, and for good reason. Sex is the kind of thing you can teach yourself. But you need to take a detached view on it. Like get away from it. People really suck. I don't blame them. Been saying it for years. Needs to be a movement to do away with social media period. We clearly can’t handle it and it is destroying us. We don’t connect anymore or strive for deep relationships. There’s no romance. It’s all on the surface. I was born in the 80’s and was a teenager in the 90’s. I remember when people connected. I remember finding love and the excitement of that connection. Now it’s such a foreign thing. I don’t feel or see it anywhere. One of the main driving factors is social media and yes the easily ready porn everywhere. Everything is hyper sexualized. And I mean everything. There needs to be a movement of disconnection from our phones. Do your part. Spread the word. Limit your time online and for Peet’s sake delete the social media apps. You don’t need any of them. I'm not disagreeing with anything said specifically in this section of podcast, HOWEVER - I think it is also important to point out that human beings have for the VAST majority of their time on this planet, lived in much smaller pools of people. We weren't competing with so many people at ALL TIMES, which is the situation people find themselves in more and more. It's said that a riot is the language of the unheard, and I think in a similar vein, people in subconsciously feeling defeated and overwhelmed. No matter how hard they try it's not good enough. There's always someone "better" on Tinder or Onlyfans. People will spend their time, money and attention trying to get the best at all times, which leaves many people without mates or matches. Others have mentioned fantasy (movies, etc) being part of the issue as well, and they are right. We constantly raise the bar to this unattainable level, but that's what everyone is conditioned to think is normal. Yes, porn doesn't help, but I think it's the natural end result of people trying their hardest and not getting anywhere, so that's what the can turn to. Many people have staggeringly unrealistic expectations.

@@TheLordSheogorathdon't forget though that millenials could not afford to be picky and cocky like gen z can nowadays due to worker shortage. A lot of us millennials entered the labour market after the 2008 financial crisis and even with advanced degrees it was extremely hard to find a half decent job, so whatever we got we had to take and hold onto it whatever unreasonable demands employers forced on us, otherwise we would have starved. Currently, workforce is so scarce that everyone with a pulse gets accepted. I see things happen on a regular at my job for which me and my older colleagues would have been fired for the tenth of that offense on the spot. Employers are desperate now to hold onto bodies, so employees can get away with demanding fair wage, work-life balance and boundaries etc. That would have been (mostly) unthinkable even 5 yrs ago. Millennials just did not have the luxury to demand those things. But this is just my experience and observation.

This subject seems similar to a story you told some time back about a young warrior distracted by an evil spirit that could show him anything he desired. Eventually, he was weakened to the point where he could not fulfill his destiny and save his people. People need to be reeducated on sex in general. Previous generations knew to keep it between a married man and woman, and treat it with the utmost respect. And while porn has always lurked in the background of human society, it's influence and presence today could be argued as being unrivaled because of technology and other social factors. Sex is beautiful, wholesome, and offers an intimate level of connection to another person as nothing else does, when treated with the moral decency and respect it demands. The problem lies in chasing only after the high it offers, while ignoring or rejecting those other aspects. It is something that cannot function properly apart from that. If all you did was eat candy for every meal, your body would deteriorate from lack of treating it with proper care and diligence. The same thing happens both physically and mentally when it comes to porn, and it's effects on a person. To the individual, it's dangerous. To collective society, it's utterly devastating.

It's hard to find that genuine, romantic partner -- after years of online dating, and having friends that date online, we finally ditched the apps (we tried many) and have yet to meet anyone in person. Online, I'd be ghosted, or absolutely no guy I dated wanted to commit to anything that's more than casual. Even the profiles I saw and didn't swipe on -- "just want to see where this goes" or "just casual" were the majority. Just from my POV/opinion, commitment is seen as "taboo" "crazy" or "needy" in dating culture. I assume it's it's similar for men swiping on women. Not only porn but the endless consumption and availability of entertainment. Which I’ve noticed with my kids and especially my friends kids. I don’t allow my kids to watch TH-cam at all or consume tv as much as possible. But I’ve been paying attention to my friends kids all ages 1-7 or so years old. But I hung out with my son and his best friend, both 5, and the friend has his own iPhone, iPad, switch etc and allowed to watch TH-cam and all that pretty much whenever. I got back on the horse, recently met a nice girl (by pure dumb luck btw, I’m no Prince Charming) and abstaining from it has been a lot easier. I realized my personal issue causing the addiction was because deep down I was lonely and believed nobody would want me. Now that I’ve found somebody who so far, likes me for me, it’s like that issue’s being resolved piece by piece. This was a great video.

Chicken and the egg; what came first? The lack of romantic intimacy, or the pornography addiction? I’d argue the pornography addiction hinders the ability to find romantic love, to expect a woman to give that to you while still indulging in pornography to fill that hole is unrealistic. It’s like expecting someone to fill your cup while you’re actively poking holes in the glass. Nobody will ever be able to fill that hole, so long as you keep poking holes.
Figure out why you poke holes, patch them up, then maybe someone will actually be able to fill that cup and would want to, because it would be worth filling.

I think porn is only a piece of this problem. There are those, like myself, who see porn as a mechanical ritual. We acknowledge that porn is completely unrealistic, but we consume it anyway, because we're single, so might as well -- as long as it doesn't deteriorate to the point where we cannot function daily. I personally don't consume extreme content and keep my taste as grounded as possible.
Something happened to me not very long ago that changed my perspective on this. I met a girl I was actually infatuated with. They come across quite rarely for me. The moment that happened, I lost all motivation to consume pornography. About a week after she told me she was not interested in dating, I returned to my old habits. So I can't empathize with anyone who is so addicted to porn that they find no interest in real sex.
My problem, and I imagine there are more like me out there, is that romantic relationships seem like an unintelligent risk. Most of our modern history leading up to now has taught us this lesson. Divorce rates are extremely high, and divorce is extremely punishing for the male, which I happen to be. There is the obvious risk of becoming involved with a mentally unstable person that tries to ruin your life. However, there is an even worse, more insidious risk; a relationship of complete mediocrity and dissatisfaction. The idea that I'd waste 2+ years of time with someone only to find out I'm not really interested in them any more, or perhaps because they stopped putting effort in once they felt comfortable, is quite soul-crushing. That idea has kept me trapped for my entire life.
Perhaps my romantic drive just isn't high enough. Perhaps I'm just picky. And no, most of my criteria do not involve appearance -- my friends always told me that I find women attractive that they wouldn't. But this is how my mindset approaches this problem.

As I got older starting dating. Every single girl I met was so damaged, had daddy issues, didn't need or want a man that porn became my way to make that special connection. When I met my wife everything changed. I realized I didn't need porn to feel loved anymore. I had someone that wanted to love me for all of me. I usually like his episodes but this one disappointed me. There were a lot of ideas in here that were misogynist, outdated, and sexist against women. Especially, where it's mentioned that women who show some skin somehow makes them less appealing to men for a relationship. That's his opinion.
And then the talk about possible human extinction due to the absence of breeding. Is this a joke? We are totally overpopulated and destroying the planet. Pausing the button and not breeding for a while would not be a bad thing at all.
So, it sounds he wants to get married to a woman that covers up her body and then wants to breed with her. That's cool. But he shouldn't put down people who don't want these things.

Note that the chemical addiction to sex hormones of both sexes has not been addressed... the continual involvement of pornography allows the addiction to intensify over long periods and to become even more addictive... once the person involved tries to become uninvolved they suffer withdrawals like a drug or alcohol addict and it is not easy to quit.

God help the younger generation exploited by rapacious content creators, businesses and their own self gratification. goodness. so glad i am older and wiser and not adversely affected by this dynamic. better to have nothing than the sorry state of what is on offer and its potential "contamination"

And we are not together. But I can see how much harm I have done to the people I have met by behaving in a totally unusual and inhumane way. Here I understand the cruelty of this industry that chooses to use human biology to its detriment having only one goal in mind, which is money and power (and forgetting who we are).

That I want a family and a child and a dude who doesn't watch porn or follow women who post half naked photos on Instagram. A gal friend told me that I can't just come out the gate with it. My response? Yes I can. If the dude can't handle it, then better not to waste my time or theirs. In my opinion, no one has to do those things, but if they want to be with me, they do. I have to disagree with this guy when he says the desire to become worthy of a sexual relationship is what has motivated men to accomplish great things... If anything, it's the complete opposite. If we look at many of the so called "geniuses" and men who accomplished truly great things, it was infact do the transcending, or, rather, the Sublimation of the Sexual impulse that allowed them to accomplish those things. The Sublimation of the sexual energy and redirection of it towards more lofty goals, rather then its dissipation on the temporary satisfaction of carnal desires is what has produced the true polymaths and prodigies, helped awaken their creativity and allowed them to produce such incredible feats and lasting contributions to society. Many were celibate, or never Married, like Nikola Tesla. It doesnt seem that difficult to become worthy of a sexual relationship either tbh... Take her out to dinner, chocolate and flowers, one thing leads to another, etc... She isn't expecting you to chisel out a marble bust of her... The ones who could accomplish those incredible feats of architecture or timeless works of art were the ones who werent worried about "getting the girl" and instead understood the inherent power of harnessing the Sexual Energy (Which is the creative power in the Universe) to be used for more lasting achievements of renown and acclaim.

I agree with the main points of the video but there’s a very important thing they did not touch upon. The same society that gives us easy access to porn, does not allow for young people to explore their sexuality in a healthy and taboo free manner, and more importantly there are no teachings of how to do so SAFELY. I think admitting that we are all sexual beings and that it is okay for us to explore sexuality with each other and ourselves from an early age with proper guidance and openness, such as with any other aspect of our lives, would go a long way.

I’m talking about mothers. The vast majority of mothers of teenagers, and especially teenage boys, are in denial about porn. Not only because they don’t want to think about their sons watching it, but also because they don’t want to think about their husbands watching it.
