Welcome To Eltingville Pilot - Part 3

- This is the final portion of the pilot to the show "Welcome To Eltingville" which never made it to Adult Swim's line-up. More fun-poking at the geek-nerd lifestyle with the "trivia-off". (Created by Evan Dorkin)
SPOILER: According to the comics, here’s where The Club members are at ten years later....
Jerry Stokes is a professional M:tG player and is dating an attractive cosplayer/gaming news reporter.
Josh Levy is writing for a comics news website and is unsuccessfully trying to be a screenwriter and comics artist.
Pete DiNunzio is working for a sleazy horror porn company as a cameraman, using his job to get sex with scream queen wannabes.
Bill Dickey is still living at home, still a virgin and had a failed business as a fandom collection consultant. He’s somehow became even a bigger asshole than shown here.
Do you know whether the comic is still going? I kinda wanna give it a try
I'll accept this as canon. Thank you.
Seems Jerry is the most successful of the group.
@@Blakefe He is. In fact the sad thing about the last tale is that he tries to reunite the club at Comic Con, but soon regrets it as he sees these guys are still the toxic burden they always were. In the end he ditches them, probably forever.
@@evilwillhunting A sign of maturity.
"Im telling you Boba fett is dead" aged like fine wine
To be fair even without the Disney+ shows there's still the expanded universe from the comics.
He's dead bro
@@UmToisBoth the non-canon Expanded Universe and the in-canon Skywalker Saga, Boba Fett escaped the Sarlacc’s stomach. Just because you hate a story, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen
its kinda eerie that they ended with "is this the end of the eltingville club?" when this was the only episode that aired.
Weird
Every one of the comics ends with some variation of that phrase because the club members are always at each others throats. It's meant to be ironic that they keep declaring they're done with one another but are back to nerding it up the following day.
for me it's kind of eerie the way you phrased that actually (that's not an insult, that was genuinely well phrased)
Needs to be more of this. This is cool
The irony of the last line... So sad...
dont remind us ;-;
Poetic in ways but sadly we wont get to experience this potential masterpiece that would have been this series.
See Big bang Theory writers, this how you do geek humor right.
Totally.
Nah both series suck
The referances don't need to be so obvious that everyone gets them to be funny.
Adrian Dezendegui what series this was a pilot lmao
Clerks is the perfect balance of cultured and accessible
This show totally could have gone on for at least 13 episodes.
@emptyglass7867fucking 30 episodes at least!
This show's got everything:
-Fat kid in a trenchcoat wearing his hair in a ponytail
-Posturing about obscure collectibles
-Posturing about obscure trivia
-Awkward little kid who wants to hang out with all the "cool" older kids
-Sketch as fuck comic shop that doesn't take anything but cash
As an aside, an original run Kenner Toys Boba Fett figure averages between $1000 and $2000 to find one.
I was the "Awkward little kid who wants to hang out with all the "cool" older kids" Dorkin based Willoughby on. The physical appearance is of Chris, the other kid that hung out at the comic book store. I liked the comic 'Elfquest' though, not Pokemon/ M:tG cards. They updated that for the era in which this was made.
Josh is pretty cute. I’d date him as long as he deals with that acne
what about the restroom?
@@greenweeaboo8924 It’s just nasty af
not that i mean the way it`s decorated with all the pictures and calendar
"What year did Soylent Green take place??"
"2022!"
Me: *sweats*
I wonder how they predicted that time
@@natie5895 it’s not a prediction. apparently the movie soylent green (which came out in 1973) DID really take place in 2022
im sweating and its 2023
Pretty sure some parts of the world still practice cannibalism.
The voice actors absolutely killed it in this pilot, especially Bill's and Josh's. I wonder if for the Trivia-Off it was one continuous take or just spliced together. If the former that's some incredible stamina for the actors, and if the latter it's amazing how organic they make broken up takes sound.
I'm really surprised they got away with using BOBA FETTS likeness. And when I first saw this on Adult Swim the" trivia off" gave me goosebumps. They talked about shit I actually seen and like.
Disney didn't rule the world back then.
@@funkyweapon1981 They were still close, they just didn't have Star Wars yet.
Dude this was the first american cartoon that i've seen spell out "Bemular". That was eerie..
@@xibalbalon8668disney bought star wars in 2012. I actually have no idea why shows like this and robot chicken can use the character
The song is actually called "What can you get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)?"
He said "What DO you get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already HAS a Comb)?
- He should've been disqualified.
Speaking of wookiees, Bill in the comic shouted that he would wookiee fist a girl.
Technicalities, and yet somehow they easily get overlooked, especially since technically those were just paraphrasing.
Don’t worry he loses later anyway.
I just can't believe that's a real thing.
The irony of that ECW chant is this short was released during 2001
ECW as well as WCW we're both bought out by WWE during that time bracket for basically nothing
If Welcome to Eltingville was a full series, everyone would shout the AEW chant at the comic book store.
I knew Wedge Antilles, Jack Kirby, Gomamon, Bumblebee, the Ents, Gerald McBoingboing, Soylent Green, Tintin's dog, Island Earth (MST movie),Arena, Blofeld and Friday the 13th off the top of my head.
I am so ashamed.
You shouldn’t be. Everybody knows that Gomamon digivolves into Ikkakumon.
@@nou7842 This is the type of work that shoots references at the viewer to test whether or not they get them. That’s probably one reason why it didn’t become a show.
@@JulesHinmon Well I noticed an issue with Digimon. While it’s true Gomamon digivolves into Ikkakumon, sources seem to point to how each Digimon can become something else entirely, not just what they’re primarily known for. For example, Patamon digivolves into Angemon, but in World 2, I tried raising him properly and he just becomes some Ninjamon. I guess those early games weren’t stable enough with establishing their proper Digivolutions.
@@carlossoto1715 Yeah, Digimon have branched evolutions.
The trivia off was epic, also I love how the comic shop owner threw Jerry and Peter out even though they did nothing
Truly, a show ahead of its time.
Fun fact, Bill's sister was voiced by Tara Sands, who also voiced Mokuba from Yugioh and was a co host on Cartoon Network Fridays; too bad it was a brother and not a sister in the comics. And Josh really was a sore loser here. He lost, fair and square, and even after Joe denied both forms of payment, Bill could've easily allowed Josh to get in trouble with Joe because what he was doing was already immoral, Josh likely would've been reprimanded and kicked out, maybe not that last thing, and Bill could quickly try again to buy the Boba Fett fair and square.
@carlossoto1715 No way! I used to watch Tara on Cartoon Network Fridays when I was a kid! I didn’t know she was also the voice of Mokuba Kaiba! That’s so cool!
Bill's VA was also Numbuh 274
"He's no good to me dead"
Hehehe... I see what they did there.
I never though that in a show about everything and anything nerd (which isn't a bad thing) that there would be an ECW chant. How did this NOT get greenlit!?!?!?!?
You do have to keep in mind this came out in March 2002 back when Adult Swim first started and they really weren't at the point of being able to actually able to greenlit fully traditional animated cartoons. Most of their originals were in house stuff made on the cheap like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Brak Show and Space Ghost Coast to Coast. Yeah next year in 2003 Venture Brothers would release it's pilot which would get a green lit to series but even the pilot was done in Flash and the first season of the show had pretty limited animation at points much more so then most of what we even see here. Same with even The Boondocks and that had a much bigger sort of push due to it's creator then Evan Dorkin really had so yeah it's just lingered as a special that sadly never made it to a show. Not to mention that when this came out it was one of those series that was kind of ahead of it's time. Honestly geek and dork stuff in the early 2000's is not nearly as mainstream as it is now where quite honestly these sort of cults and series have much more taken over the world. Hell this is one of the few shows that openly acknolwedged Doctor Who was a thing BEFORE the 2005 Revival era where it was actually something the common person in America might of heard of besides just dorks. Since yeah now it'd make way more sense to have this kind of show especially to mock how toxic geek culture is but was much more of a niche that really couldn't of worked more in the time it came out.
DUDE! The ECW chants really caught me off-guard! I was amazed! What if one of the trivia questions was, "Who's the mastermind genius of ECW?" PAUL HEYMAN!
Wrestling fans are nerds
We need this to become a show! This was pushed back because " It would cost too much ". What about all the live action and borrowed TV shows on Adult Swim, do THEY cost ass much? YES. As I said this needs to become a show
Sadly, current day adult swim/Hollyweird would mess it up. I do think an adaptation would need to be toned down at least because the audience can only stomach so much until it becomes too much.
Holy hell I wish this made it past the pilot.
The Boba Fett debate is actually over. He lived.
This show simultaneously makes me as happy as possible to be a nerd and as angry as possible at the same time. Such annoyance hasn't been felt since I saw The Big Bang Theory.
The difference is this has more reverence to it, this is actually made by fans, big bang theory is not.
@@AshVsEvilFredI don’t know if reverence is the right word, the original comic had a horrible disgust for this kind of nerd
The author was clearly familiar with nerds of the time and loathed this kind
@@AshVsEvilFredThis was made by haters, not fans.
You kinda missed the whole point of this series then, it's supposed to be critical satire of toxic nerds and fandoms in general while Big Bang Theory is a shitty ripoff of Seinfeld with obnoxious pop culture reference and Wikipedia science articles ham-fisted in that's supposed to be endearing.
"Sandwormy little hands" a Dune reference. Sweet.
Is anyone else embarrassed to have known the answers to those questions?
***** Only the Shadow knows...
Francisco Perez Mmm.."Only the Shadow knows" anyelse think Ed (Ed Edd n Eddy) was referencing this when he said "Only the Claw knows!"?
\o_o/ i only knew the ikakumon one, but the guy got it before I did
Noob Saibot?
What's even worse knowing that one of their answers was inaccurate. :(
this show would be successful as a series on so many levels.
it appeals greatly to today considering the rise of comicbook movies. so in short, more people are coming forward with their geekiness, and others are coming into the fold.
plus, every comicbook fan has at least met one fan who didn't have a life, but rather lived like these guys.
i'd love to have this show on my DVR.
I can see this show doing well, going on for a few seasons, then being revived in 2018 for being relevant again.
Or going for only one season, being totally forgotten about and then gaining a cult following in 2023. Like Mission Hill.
@@TheAndrewj96 Kind of like what happened with Clone High. It had only one season. Years later and now in 2023 there's a second season of the show.
@@Sixma-ej5vp Exactly.
This entire thing aged so well, it’s insane
For all the wrong reasons. People of these caliber would be endlessly bickering about politics when the whole industry is a sinking ship. The Eltingville club would tear current comics media, and Twitter a new one that’s coming from them. They would never forgive and go full on nuclear.
@@mrconroy4672 Which is exactly what happens later in the series when they all grow up and become bigger creeps and losers (minus Jerry, he managed to cut ties with the gang and become a functional adult.)
"The Big Bang Theory" is the Hollywood version of what nerds are like, thus making them seem like friendly outcasts who are still cute to the opposite sex. Thus, girls love the show because they can laugh and "awww" at the lovable characters, while male nerds love the show because they enjoy the references and can fantasize that people see them as similar to the characters in real life. "Eltingville" is closer to what real nerds are actually like, and thus, unappealing to female audiences and too painful to watch for male nerds for whom it hits too close to home. In the Hollywood version, a cute girl like Penny would conceivably hang around a group of nerds. In reality, and in "Eltingville", not a chance. Therefore, it may have been difficult for the show to find an audience.
it is better lmao
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

The end always gets me... it brings me to tears..
it really was the END OF THE ELTINGVILLE CLUB. :(
This whole pilot aged like fine wine, specially the Boba Fett is dead comment.

@joseaca oh it was just really common knowledge back then, it's like asking what type is pikachu
welcome to eltingville deserves deserves a second chance the pilot was mad funny, only at the time they couldn't do it but the time after words and now they can do it, it's never too late
0:29 Jason's voice for Bill is admittedly kinda cute❤
Jerry's reaction when Josh got the answer wrong tho 😂
That was a clever move
This pilot was basically my life as a teenager.
It's 2022. Soylent Green is indeed people.
"Welcome to Eltingville! We'll spend Mom's money/On Major Violence, Boogie School, and UltraMummy! There's nothing wrong with us, THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH US!"
"Is this the end of the Eltingville Club?"
Yes it is...lol
The show was produced as a pilot and shown on Adult Swim on March 3, 2002 along with the Pilot of Mission Hill but due to AS assuming the target audience "NERDS" wouldn't get most of the pop culture references and nerd talk they canned it. Also the show was a one-time deal for AS and they had no obligation to create a series even if the pilot was a hit
It's hard to believe that Mission Hill was chosen as a full series over this.
Trans8010 I think it was actually because it would have been too expensive to produce.
@@joshfraley8019 I mean Mission Hill was good, this show was just made at the wrong time

2:49 Objection! Josh asked for the Penguin's FULL name, that means no initials. The answers would really be "Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot".
In other words, Bill was technically wrong, but he wouldn't admit defeat, so he asked Josh another trivia question anyway.
I remember recording this show on VHS showing my brother and we laughed so hard! It should’ve turned into a series!
Man, this deserved to become a full series.
This wouldve been such a great show :(
such a shame this never got picked up
if anybodys reading this check out the comic the art is rlly well drawn and the humor is quite good
The ECW chant got me
For those that need a reminder
Green Kryptonite is standard Kryptonite its toxic to all Kryptonians.
Red Kryptonite is non toxic compared to Green Kryptonite however it turns any Kryptonian standing right next to it into a dangerously violent psychopath. Its arguably worse then Green Kryptonite because any Kryptonian triggered by Red Kryptonite has no control of their bodies.
Gold Kryptonite is 100x MORE TOXIC then standard and more commonly available Green Kryptonite because it not only weakens Superman it makes it harder and longer for his powers to come back its the Kryptonite equivalent to finding space Cancer.
There is also Pink Kryptonite which is like a Gag Kryptonite which changes the gender of any Kryptonian standing right next to it. That one's just fun. I think Blue Kryptonite triggers despair or something
Actually the gender change thing is new. Before Pink Kryptonite just made them gay, but that was changed since they realized that the joke was in bad taste.
There's a good bit of Mission Hill in here along with some Invader Zim and Clone High for good measure.
Also they were featured in an exclusive story for Wizard Magazine 99 from 1999 where bill and josh both attempt to build an Iron Man costume for the annual Wizard costume contest and Josh wins 2nd prize a Kingdom Come graphic novel as the Human Torch cause his suit blows up
BAH!!! Where are the end credits?! I want that ROCKIN' end theme song!!!
Oh also just realized Pete's totally right about Boba Fett as he's not only alive after Return of the Jedi but he's going to be in the Mandalorian next season. So yeah totally did survive that Sarlacc Pitt... man wonder what the club would think of all the new movies now that essentially geek stuff has taken over the world and these sort of nerdy debates and triva off sort of questions are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy more common place then they would of been 20 years ago.
They hate it. At least Bill and Josh do. In the comics there's a timeskip to 10 years later and they're in comic con complaining about everyone "invading" their fandoms
Wasn't he confirmed alive in the Extended Universe books before all that?
@@jordanloux3883 Well even if that was a thing in the EU it's different when you literally see a show actually SHOWING him crawling out and that being unquestionable proof he survived.
I'm so glad they included this in that [adult swim] box for other people to find. I've watched this SO many times on a VHS with a bunch of other stuff from that year.
ECW, ECW, ECW that was classic.

He does!
He does look a lot like Pico but Dorkin has said that the character is loosely based off of himself in The Eltingville Club epilogue about why the pilot never got picked up or it could’ve been one of his live journals.

Pete Was Right: 5:55. BOOK OF BOBA FETT.
I'm enough of a geek to know Bill technically lost when he answered "Oswald C. Cobblepot" when he was asked for the Penguin's full name. Really, an abbreviation for Charles?
That's debatable. The "C." for "Chesterfield" may be an abbreviation, but it still counts as saying the full "Oswald C. Cobblepot" name, so Bill got it right still.
Evan Dorkin should beg adult swim to give this show another try. I wish i still had all my milk and cheese/Dork comics, but unfortuneately i sold my entire comic collection about 10 years ago :(
Holy shit they actually referenced Ultraman.
I don't know. I'm more ashamed that I actually know they got the question about Dr. Butcher M.D. wrong. It's original title was Zombie Holocaust.
yes, this is the end
Sadly... :(
How unfortunate for a show to be canceled after the pilot.
I love that they managed to squeeze in a Thunderbirds reference there.
aw. they never made up. that's actually really sad.
1:55 Who's watching this in 2022 lol xd?
1:55 Holy shit
adult swim has live action shows that doesn't make sense and are stupid but can't have hilarious cartoon like this I DEMAND FOR THIS CARTOON TO BE PICKED UP

This show deserved a full animated series. Back when this pilot came out, the word nerd wasn't as powerful as of today. Specially with this showdown. Nobody would know what they were talking about. Also, what happened to Joe's voice?
A series in which the likability of a character varies inversely with said character's screen-time. How is this not on Nick?

6:00 As a matter of fact Bobba Fett survived the Saarlac pit. It was confirmed in the book "The Mandalorian Armor". So point goes to Pete!
It was also confirmed in Dark Empire you philistines
Well I am also sure another reason is how close the characters are to the South Park characters. We got the angry fat kid, the kid who opposes him and somewhat the more important one of the group. The other two also look something like Stan and Kenny too and than there is the blonde kid who reminds me of Butters. But thats just my own obversations.

I wish Adult Swim could have made this series after the pilot. It’s appealing to geeks like me. Sure it’s based off of the comics which lasted until 2014 and doesn’t have a lot of stories which could span a lot of volumes.
