I remember the Warden truly made this show IMPRESSIVE to me, due to how well he was animated and how "flamboyant" he was, he really commanded the scenes.
He definitely did, in exactly the same way that Willy Wonka does! The warden definitely makes Superjail the brilliant show that it is!
He really wasn't flamboyant, just eccentric. But anything besides manly bear killer is seen as gay these days.

You could also make an argument that the 15 min timeslots fueled creativity and removed the need to kill time on screen. Mix that with "you're on adult swim at night, literally everyone watching is either drunk or high, and probably college aged". Also, adult swim usually has a reason, they just prefer to come across as if they're attacking the fans. Metalocalypse was cancelled because Brendon wanted to make a high budget movie (which we actually finally got,and the wait was worth it), but adult swim doesn't really have (or didn't have) the right resources. Nowadays they do, but back then, the second it cost too much to produce your show, it was gone. That's why alot of long running AS shows are so horridly animated
Yeah this definitely happened with Superjail, the animation was too hectic and took way way too long, especially for season 1, which is most likely why they had the 3 year gap

Honestly the show has has beautiful smooth animations and nice interesting memorable characters I guess one of the main reasons why it was canceled was that it was quite Offensive too but they make fun of everyone equally which makes it like “it’s not racist if I make fun of everyone “ 😂
Agreed with all of these points & I also enjoy the “make fun of everyone approach” which is very South Park-esque and works well in the show!

See, kind of the reasons as to why and how I like this show so much is that it didn’t care and it thrived off of that.

I felt like they were really spinning it's wheels at the end of Season 4, and if Season 2 was supposedly well-received, maybe we would've legit had more.
What i love about adult swim, is that it actually gives shows like this a chance. There is so much genius content adult swim funds that wouldve never be able to work elsewhere. I think cancelling some shows early is an unfortunate, but necessary evil to make room for more new ideas. Its kind of like when you go to a restaurant and order one of those variety plates with like 50 tiny samples of different foods on it instead of just 1 large meal. Sure, it sucks that your newly discovered favorite food is just a bite size taste test, but had it not been for that you wouldve just ordered some regular meal and likely never had the chance to even discover it

Well, it'd be more like after you had that delicious sample, the restaurant made it illegal to make that food, so you can't enjoy it anymore. I'm not saying cancellation of shows isn't sometimes necessary, but it isn't exactly great.

Not only did they cancel it, they had the creators trim down the episode length of the 4th season AND hardly advertised that the show had a fourth season to begin with.

The reason why season 4 was shorter and of less quality was because Adult Swim cut their budget for the season, hoping they'd produce more episodes faster. It took 3-4 years for each season to come out prior, so by denying the Superjail animation crew money, they'd crank it out faster; which worked.
I will forever be bitter about the fact they cancelled Superjail, Metalocalypse, Moral Orel, and China IL but kept Mr. Pickles
I always thought the Warden just tortured because he thought he had to. He seemed to always be this happy-go-lucky. As a child, he was always oblivious to his fathers abuse and he always wondered why prisons cant "be fun".
I think that's why he is the way he is. He wants to make superjail "Fun" while he is absolutely oblivious to the emotions (and torture) of other people (especially the inmates).
This is actually a really good rationale for his actions, that and he’s clearly a bit manic ahah

I used to watch Superjail in high school. Once I got past all the violence, the show was great! It was funny, the characters were unique, it looked amazing for the time and even now and it was genuinely interesting. I even rewatched it again a couple years back and it mostly held up. This show was truly one of a kind.
Looking back, I think later adult cartoons and shows learned the wrong lesson and thought being gross and rude were the key to being good. It's really what you do with the gross stuff that makes the show good.
I personally love the violence in Superjail, because as you said they use it so well & it serves its purpose!

i miss this show a lot because of its wild creativity, psychedelic animation and crude humor. but with season 4 being rushed, it was probably a good idea to cancel the show before it could decrease in quality anymore. glad to see the torch being passed on to ballmastrz and i hope season 3 comes out!
That’s a valid point, although there were definitely some strong moments in season 3 and season 4! I do agree that Ballmasterz is a very natural successor and should definitely be watched!
Superjail is without a doubt, my top three favorite adult swim shows, the others being venture bros and ballmastrz.
The show has these memorable visuals: crazy violence, insanely fast plot changes, and the fact almost none of this gets resolved makes it more funnier. We'll pretty much never get a show like this again, which is a shame, considering I loved the absolute craziness superjail has.
Time police is still the best episodes in superjail. How we go from a idea to expand the jail to a _LITERAL TIME RESET_ is just another example of why I love this show.
You wonder why Christy Karacas is one of my favorite people in animation.
I also love the fact that almost none of the plot points get resolved, and that even more action gets piled on top - it’s such a spectacle of animation to witness! Karacas is a true creative genius and I love the fact that he still has a great relationship with Adult Swim!

Xavier Renegade Angel is my favorite AS show of all time, and I really REALLY wish they'd make season 3. Partially why I think it ended early was because of how obscure it was, and how some people didn't get the jokes at first. (btw really awesome vid on Super Jail, it's another favorite AS show of mine, and like you said we deffinitly need more shows like it haha.)

Im pretty confident in saying, superjail was bound to have a short lifespan, with its frenetic nature and high-octane violence, it was gonna burn out quick no matter how they handled it.
Yeah I get that, definitely a fast paced and frantic start in season 1 that was hard to maintain afterwards since the animation was so time consuming! That being said if there was some way to recapture that season 1 animation style and apply it to a modern show I.E., Superjail, that would be a true gift to animation

I feel like people often overlook China, IL. It started getting into it's own rhythm by season 2 and had it's own charm, it deserved at least one more season
China IL is highly underrated, my guess is that it wasn’t stylistically engaging enough for the adult swim execs

One problem is when it focused on 3 women characters and real life issues in one episode
Adult Swim had a problem with canceling shows to shove more of that unfunny Time and Eric shit down everyone's throats. Never met a normal person that liked those two, it's always the person that acts like you'll too stupid to get the comedy and only people like them can truly enjoy it.

Man, Superjail was a bonkers show. The art and animation and all the ridiculous stuff going on was like a full on assault on the senses...but weirdly in a good way. The absurdity of it was just a thing I couldn't take my eyes off of...it was weird but it was also really good from what I remember lol
That’s the thing I love about Superjail as well, it’s such an incredible piece of hectic absurdist animation & it captures your attention from the very first second!
This is my favorite show of all time. The way it breaks down the human condition without even considering stopping to pause to think about what they just went over is insanely good to me.
I also love the fact that they rarely go back to plot points, they literally just plow forward

I remember finding this show sometime around 2018, and just bingewatching the entire series. Theres not many shows that get as experimental as Superjail. I'm still saddened at the fact that it never went past 4 seasons, and that there isn't more attention surrounding it. Thanks for putting a spotlight on this good ass show dude

As someone who usually doesn't like the more gorey stuff. Superjail was actually amazing.
I think it's because it was just such an artistic cartoon. The scenes when absolute chaos would break out were actually animation marvels in my honest opinion.
I think the actually love of cartooning put into the show made me able to deal with the more visceral elements.
Superjail does a brilliant job of animating the pure chaos to the point where it just flies by and you forget about the plot all together, which the shows does as well ahah
Superjail was sensational to the eyes and ears. David Wain has such a smooth voice and the colors and (HAND!) animation was eye crack.
I miss it so much but it wasn't advertised enough and the last season really felt like they weren't into it anymore.
Superjail really was a treat to all senses! There were still some strong moments in season 4 and I wish that the show had kept that season 1 style of pacing, even if the animation team had to change due to time restraints

superjail is awesome but the biggest part of what kept me coming was the animation style in the pilot and the first season. The animation has so much impact. I can't explain it but the first season feels like people who had little experience with traditional animation wanting to make something move and feel super alive without using the traditional regular techniques. The perspective is all sorts of messed up, the characters are always off-model, and everything snaps to the keyframes super hard but that's what makes it so awesome to look at, it's literally unlike any animation you've ever seen before.
I never got around to finishing the show, the plots are good but the animation from season 2 forward was a bit disappointing. I might actually get around to finishing it because of this vid
Yeah it was really disappointing to see the animation shift from season 1 to season 2, although season 3 and 4 is a return to form in terms of the animation! This is an excellent breakdown of exactly why season 1 and the pilot works so well!
I get so happy when I hear people bring this show up!! I don't hear it be mentioned very often, and it took me a while to remember what it was until a couple years ago when I found it on Adultswim's website! I binged it remembering the warden and alice! I watched a video on drawn together another show that I remember seeing snippets of when I was younger and thinking it was hilarious haha. I hope more and more people find SuperJail to the point where it gets a recreation or a continuation! I don't care! I just loved seeing all those characters interact with each other, the voice actors make each character really come to life.
I love Superjail it’s honestly such a chaotic show & I truly hope a special is made at some point by adult swim!
A note about the Stanford prison experiment. It's methodology may invalidate the conclusion made. The guards didn't turn abusive because they were given power and chose to exploit it, they assumed being abusive was expected of them and therefore acted so without question, so the guards didn't actually have power to abuse, they were following a higher power, the guy who was running the experiment. Which is still a interesting thing to study as it can be used too explain the "just following orders" mentality
I actually didn’t know that the Stanford prison experiment was compromised in this way, so thank you for informing me! And that’s actually a really interesting point about the higher ups & the expectation of violence. The warden in Superjail is therefore moreso acting out as the higher ups, rather than the guards - because hey, he does all the torturing for fun after all

I love Superjail, and I can't believe how little-known it is among people I know.. They really did kill it too early, right when it was getting completely out of this world levels of insane, too!

WTH is this clickbait? It wasn't Adult Swim's call to make, the creators of the show cancelled the show because it's a lot of work. You've got to remember that halfway through Superjails airtime Christ Karacas started working on Robotomy for Cartoon Network, and both of these shows are animated frame-by-frame with lots of detail.
The flashbacks of Warden's past were the moments this show got real. You can really start to see a lot of the Warden's problems and his cruel side come from the way his father treated him. But I have to give the Warden credit as a character who never lost sight of who he was. Even as a child he had a vision for the way he wanted his jail to be and I think he acts like a foolish happy child as a adult to mock his father. He runs the prison in all the goofy ways his father would probably disapprove of and hate and it is more effective/successful. The show was all over the place most of the time with insane stuff happening around every corner but I appreciate how the show took small moments to give a little backstory to Warden, Jared, and Alice to explain why they act the way they do and how they ended up working there.
Brilliant entertaining show bursting with creativity and made the most of it's 4 seasons. This and the super milk chan show deserve another chance.

The irony in canceling Moral Orel for being too depressing, is that Rick and Morty, which can be just as dark at times, has unconditional support as Adult Swim’s top show.
100%, because it’s their cash cow, they posterise the depressing side of Rick and morty all over TH-cam, peak irony
There’s a lot of good stuff on AS. But I think what speaks to their values is that Moral Orel was not cancelled for having that episode where Orel effectively assaults every single woman in the town, forcing them to become pregnant (that episode is infamous for a few reasons). THAT wasn’t too dark for adult swim. What was "too dark" was when Moral Orel portrayed SA survivors as… people. With fears. And lives. So basically, the show is allowed to have assault in it. As long as they never address the victims.
Rick and Morty may be dark, but they never had that gritty, realistic episode where SA survivors try to process what happened to them. "Alone" is considered one of the best episodes Moral Orel has to offer. It just made Adult Swim uncomfortable.

Don't forget about Cheeseburger. Besides the shows intro song "coming home" they put out some real bangers. Remember they have that music video where the band is animated into Superjail for thier song "Winner" it's kind of a great highlight reel for the show.

The reason why the show was canceled is because it wasn't remarkable, there's not a lot of super jail murch, you can throw out there and because it wasn't profitable like aquateen hunger force, which had a movie that failed and the show won't go away either, and they. Just keep bringing it back. There's just not much taken sell based on super jail
Yeah in terms of the marketing front having a manic warden doesn’t scream kid friendly t-shirts as pickle Rick does, but I truly appreciate the animation style that Superjail has and it would be awesome if it was brought back even for a special!

For those who can stomach gore, Superjail makes for a really fun watch.
It's impossible not to be in awe at the animation style. Given that the first season was produced at Augenblick with the rest being done at Titmouse, it's hard to believe the show was done in Flash.
Not to mention Warden is just an awesome character in general.
You can definitely tell animators had fun drawing him, especially whenever he shapeshifts to go with what he says. ("Can't you guys C? Eye'm doing this for U!")
Shame Adult Swim pulled the plug on Superjail early. I finished the whole show on Max in the courtesy of 5 months last year, and you can bet there was a hole left in my heart after I got done, especially since the finale "Superjail Six" was a rocky episode to end on.
Adult Swim definitely should bring it back with a movie, same way they did with Aqua Teen, Venture Bros, and Metalocalypse. I'm sure there are enough people out there who'd love a Superjail revival as much as I would.

Moral Orel was cancelled “for getting too depressing” which is kinda ridiculous and Superjail was put on hiatus after season 1 because it took too long to animate stylistically, but I really truly wish they kept the season 1 animation style
