Hi 👋 I make my own suet for the birds as well. When making mine I don't cool down suet and seed mixture, I pour my mixture into non-stick loaf pans. When cooled I put two inches of hot water in my sink and place pan with cooled suet into it to allow the heat to slightly melt the suet so it then is removed easier. Then take a warm knife and cut in half. They are just the right fit for a regular sized suet cage😊
I make my mixture with bacon fat and peanut butter plus a variety of seeds! Very close to the house I see many pileated woodpeckers daily, as well as other species of woodpeckers and birds! Spend at least one hour having my morning coffee watching the show!
Wow those pileated woodpecker is going to love it and I think the other woodpeckers, maybe nuthatches, Chickadees ,Cardinals and may other birds. I am going to have to try your recipe Janette. Thank you
Nice video. Love your recipe. Thank you! I bake all my own bread. I simply line my loaf pans with parchment paper. I bet that would work..if you line the suit feeder with parchment paper and pour your suet directly in the lined feeder...then just remove the paper. You can save the same paper for the next time.
Wow, I never thought of pouring my suet mix into the feeder and forming it before cooling it down. What a GREAT idea - thank you so much for sharing it.
lol A fine recipe, sadly I just can't seem to keep the squirrels out of the suet feeders. I went so far as to add an entire shaker of Cayenne Pepper, along with several good dollops of Red Tabasco sauce, even half a jar of Luisiana hot sauce, after many trials & errors. Nothing seems to keep the squirrels out of my concoctions. Squirrels are both common greys & several black coated squirrels. Anyways, both the birds, squirrels just love the suet, no matter how I prepare it. Even the visiting possum & Rocky the Racoon in the evening don't seem to be fazed by the heat in the crumbs that have dropped during the day.
I am always fighting the squirrels on just my one feeder. Bought a baffle and the squirrels baffle the baffle and come from under it. I bought a squirrel x feeder and it worked for a couple years and broke. I grease the pole and the works but you have to reapply grease every couple weeks. Squirrels are pretty smart. Try putting corn out for them but they still like the bird feed better
Pesky squirrels. I have more trouble with the cats. The cats tend to keep the squirrels away, too. You should figure out how to use the hot pepper to keep them away. Thank you.
Please don’t grease the poles! That can get on birds’ feathers which can stick their feathers together, which can hurt their ability to fly or stay warm!
We definitely agree. The red bellied woodpecker is very cool. I still hope for the pileated. I hope you'll make some suet for your birds. Thanks for visiting
Jeanette, I haven't made that in years, but I used to just keep adding seeds, cracked & whole corn, peanuts etc until there was basically no liquid left.

I think that's a good idea. As long as it stays cold I think this will work. Thanks
Take the temperature of your warm soupy mixture.
That way you’ll know what will happen in the summer heat outdoors.
Very nice information 👍 I will be making this...thank you
Thank you, Pam. I hope you get some of the birds you want to see.
I'll bet that was Old Guy making the Woody Woodpecker sound. I knew he'd have to get in your video somehow. Keep Warm.
I don't think I could get him to make the wood woodpecker sound on camera. Yeah, I missed getting him this video. Look for the next one, this evening.
Hi, thanks for the video! I'm wondering if the recipe was successful in keeping the squirrels away?
Yes, it was successful
Thank you!@@TheNealsHomestead
Ralph Alice do we have any lard here?
Alice ya about 300 pounds of it
Cam you substitute the lard with coconut oil
coconut oil will melt/liquify at like 72 degrees farenheit so depending on where you live it wouldn't work most of the year
hi , where did you buy the large square metal feeder from ty
I don't remember where I bought the feeder cage. Sorry
