The mod community for these has created some really amazing custom firmware and ports for these devices. It's unfortunate that it's quite a complex hack to perform because it's one if the best handheld devices I own after hacking them.
I bought both. I love the idea I can throw them in my pocket at anytime when I am on the go and just pick up and play if I ever have a wait. They take up such a small amount of space. The convenience alone is worth it. It beats mindlessly scrolling through social media when waiting for a table at restaurant or at the DMV. The battery life is ridiculous and the game can be put in and out of rest mode at anytime. Much more convenient than carrying around a bulky switch, with a lot less battery life. Also, with collectibles, you kind of don't want them to become a smash hit. That way in 20 years there are less of them to go around, therefore the value will be set high.
Don't get me wrong I don't hate them. I think they are cool little devices and yes the battery life is amazing how long it lasts I don't remember the last time I charged one, but they still could have done a little more with them especially for the price.
I would of gladly bought one of these for every franchise Nintendo has. An orange one for Metroid, a brown one for donkey Kong, a pink one for Kirby, a half red and half blue for Pokemon. I bought both and was patiently waiting for more. The only thing that would of made them better is another game each and makimg them able to connect to switch as controllers
2:05: They WERE hard to find, at first. (SMB) The next year for Zelda, they got smart and limited sales to 2 per customer. I wish they would keep this going. By not doing so, they're encouraging piracy through emulation. As for putting more on them, your examples are bad, because they were 16-bit games, not 8-bit games like were included. They would have needed more powerful hardware. (processor AND screen, maybe!)
I worked at best buy when these were coming out and it was extremely annoying having a "Family" come in and each person would have the cash for one and you can tell the dad was just getting them to put them on ebay. Same with the SNES and NES Classics
I love the D-pad on these. It’s nice and stuff and way closer to an original NES D-pad then the soft squishy one they put in the NES classic controllers
They should make this with wifi and hard buttons.. so you can play all games with a nintendo eshop subscription. A phone lacks physical buttons. A micro Switch the size of game&watch.
I dont think they failed. I think they should release more. There's plenty of copies around now but if they released another, those would sell quickly and disappear from the market. I play mine at work and I have a couple of sealed version to display. I want more of these.
Were these expected to sell well anyway? It's just a cash grab. The average consumer knows that. It's no mystery. There's tons of ways to emulator these games, there's the virtual console for the switch, so those game and watch editions were doomed to fail anyway.
agreed. after having put out the NES Classic for about 60 bucks and then turning around and asking people to pay 50 for one of those games was a little out there.
Once they had the Gameboy emulation in place, these would have been a great way to drop some Gameboy hardware releases. I’d have bought a Donkey Kong one with Donkey Kong ‘94 and the Donkey Kong Land series, plus a couple of the DK Game & Watch games. Heck, release the Gameboy G&W collection games on one. The fact that I have a modded PSP and Vita, and now a modded Switch, with emulators and they can just do more than these is why they never appealed to me. And they didn’t strike me as collector item, but the mini consoles really didn’t do it for me either.
Keep in mind they did release a version of that on the GBA which only had a and b. But it did have shoulder buttons to make up for it. They could have included the other 2 face buttons but eh. Maybe 1,2,3 would have been great and the Gameboy game Super Mario Land
I never grabbed either of these despite seeing them on shelves and advertised. Just wasn’t my thing. Found you in my recommended and I love you videos so far, subbing!
These are amazing. They are stupid for not continuing the line. Maybe a tad too pricey, but they’re better than using emulators because it’s just so easy and convenient. Anyhow, twenty years from now these will be worth far more.
They didn't fail who said they failed?!? Oh just you... Well they didn't fail because they took a forty year old 8 bit game and sold them at $50.00 each and both units sold millions of copies so Im lost because your saying they failed and they didn't.
They didn't do what Nintendo was hoping they would. They may have sold a lot but also most of the sales went to resellers and you can find so many of these on eBay and Marketplace. Just people trying to get rid of the overstock they bought. If they were truly successful Nintendo would still be releasing more of them, but they stopped after the 2nd one.

I really wish it would have been an easier thing to hack. Would have been great to have the Pokémon Games on this thing
I got both of these, I love the build quality and feel of them. I’ve been patiently waiting to see if they release more but it’s not looking likely 😔

agreed
I got the zelda one. But I was quite disappointed that it didn't include a link to the past
Link to the past would have been enough to make this thing incredible!
@@theretrouniverse it could have also included Oracle of Ages, Seasons and the Minish Cap.
@@Robotoda2000 so many options they could have put but Nintendo loves and hates money at the same time lol

@@theretrouniverse I didn't even heard these existed until now. Terrible marketing.

Yeah. That is why I feel like if they had put out some kind of Game Boy Classic instead it would have done much better.
Super Mario World with 2 buttons? Yeah.....no....

Say what you want about the Zelda one but at least that one had a better deal with games and it had that neat cardboard stand
Oh absolutely. I don’t hate them. I just wish Nintendo would have made more. Like a Metroid one too
