Lots of great advice there Martha. The necessities are needles, thread and fabric. Women have been creating wonderful things from these simple items for eons, but in our aim for perfection we can really do a lot of damage to our confidence . I totally agree that if we are willing to be inspired by others, to learn from them, and allow ourselves the freedom to explore, not only do we gain the enjoyment of what we have produced, but it's also in the process itself. And by the way, judging by the wool you sent to Christine, you need to get back to colouring and spinning wool pretty darn sharpish, it was gorgeous!

Well said Linda! I wish I could be so eloquent!
Thank you about the wool. I have a giant cone of plain wool and was just thinking, I need to order wool dyes. That’s a whole time consuming thing tho and I’m not sure I want to get back to it. Spinning I could do though. 😊

My first time watching. I did traditional embroidery years ago, and the past few years I have loved junk journaling. My interest in slow stitching grew out of those 2 interest. I so love slow stitching, I am
very new to it, but just love how free handed it is, and the endless creativity of it. I really appreciate all the helpful information you gave, and seeing your own beautiful work. I didn’t quite catch the name for your inspiration of the off white market bag you experimented with stitches etc. It’s wonderful, if you could provide her name again I would appreciate it. So glad I happened onto your channel, will visit again for sure. I love those amazing bobbins. Thank so much!

Thank you so much. My journey has been similar. I e dabbled in many crafts and I made journals as well. I love fabric and threads and stitching so much more. Texture and color!
Ariane Zurcher. She’s here on TH-cam but her videos from about 2020 are the ones I was following when I was learning stitches from her. She is left handed but I found it easy enough to figure it out right handed.
Thanks for finding me, I hope you’ll subscribe and come back often. (Subscribing is free!) 😊

I buy needles anywhere i see them. Could be op shops/charity shops, ebay. Ebay needles are usually added to other items- bundle of sewing items. Or if I'm going into a fabric store I buy 1 needle packet even if I don't need them, could be either for hand sewing or machine. Though I prefer scrap fabrics, so either ebay, opshops, Facebook market place or etsy are great places to find scraps.

You are so creative and kind to share your knowledge. Do whatever you love is a great motto. You will get more time when the pup is 6 months. I think many dogs adjust to their owners, so he will realize and accept "mom needs her crafting time". 🎉❤

Greetings from Australia BB DownUnder 😁.
I like to use Sashiko needles, they're fabulously sharp, come in different lengths and are super strong. For the beading needles, I make jewellery as well and have cataracts so no hope of fine needle threading ... but I use " Big Eye Needles" They don't have a tiny aperture at the top of the needle. The entire length of the needle is split and they're fantastic! You can fit any size yarn through them from fine to chunky! ❤

Thank you Martha I really found your comments very helpful especially about taking inspiration but not trying to copy. I have embroidered for years but new to slow stitching. I have been trying to find the same fabric that others have had and forgotten to just do me your reminder was so apt. I popped over from Christine's channel, I have now subscribed.

    • @marthamanigross
      @marthamanigross  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thank you so much Carol. I find myself in the dilemma of wanting to learn the technique, but not wanting to copy exactly. It’s a fine line I guess but I try to make whatever I’m making in my own taste. When I do that, I find a lot more freedom in creating.
When I’m stuck or lose the mojo, I look at other TH-cam’s and Pinterest, and play around.
Thanks so much for coming over and subscribing.

Very nice video Martha. Absolutely loved your textured yarn ball, beautiful colors, you could sell those babies but it might take the fun out of it.
I'm from the Oregon coast and just south east of me is Fire Mtn Gems in Grants Pass, Oregon. They are an on-line store and my favorite place to get almost everything for embellishing. And they have amazing sales.

I finally go to see this video (internet service troubles) the tools info very informative for beginners and helps us seasoned stitchers too. Your spun yarn is amazing, I am a needles hunter when I go thrift and antique shop. I love the old needlebooks with the variety of needles that are usually as sharp as the day they were made. Pins I am just beginning to use more of, I like the long flower top pins and I use the Clover applique pins with the white heads, but my chubby fingers have trouble picking them up. Needle threaders ugh! I go through half a dozen of those silver ones with the fine wire, and buy them 100 at a time. I have tried several of the table top ones which have never worked for me, I am using the flat type you showed but for small needle eyes it's useless, but not bad on the larger eyes. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks so much! Glad the internet troubles are fixed - hope it stays that way.
I can relate to chubby fingers. At least the pins you use have the glass tops. I’ll look for those!

just ran across your channel. I got tired of fighting the applique piln containers that are some times difficult to remove the lid and are so small. I purchased small containers where the lids are held down with handles that come up on the side. ALso medicine bottles are great for keeping pins in. I just label the bottles. i have different size magnets like the small telescoping magnet you can find in any hardware or automotive store. They have them from pencil to larger. I keep a pencil size in my sewing box and drawer. and other places.
