what an amazing video! I'm using these videos to improve my Mandarin before I visit Taipei in a month, and this one has so much great vocab for me. As a generation X, non-binary is a bit of an alien concept for me but I always try to approach it with an open mind and accept that just because I experience life in a certain way, doesn't mean that other people experience it in the same way. Here in the US we have some difficulty with pronouns, I suppose it is not an issue in Mandarin? Also shout out to veganism!

Very few Taiwanese interviewers are willing to do such interviews in such an open, polite, and non-judgmental way. Thank you.

BTW, at 4:48, the political correct term is Native Americans 美洲原住民, not Indians 印第安人. Wouldn't want to offend all the Native Americans watching this channel. 🙂

Nice to see an informed, compassionate and inclusive interview. Thank you for this. I am an American in Japan and am Non-binary also. It is difficult to explain gender identity to many people here, and many young people say they prefer not to take on labels for their identity. It is a very different approach, but leaves room for people to self identify as they wish. This is common in younger people, but the idea of gender identity for older people in Japan is still relatively new and there is much to be done to share information and awareness. That said, I feel that Japan is a much more safe place to be Non-binary and to express my identity than if I lived at home in the US. I am happy to see this and hope that Taiwan is also a safe and inclusive place. Thanks for this video.

Another interesting interview Jay! How about interviews with people who don't believe in the idea of "non-binary" 非二元 with regards to views from medical science, gender dysphoria, freedom of speech (Jordan Peterson), woke politics, corporate backlash, unfair competition of transgender in women's sports, etc. I am interested in Taiwanese' opinions on this hot topic playing out in the American politics.

Great video Jay! interesting interviewee, Darice. It sounds like there may be less awareness about this issue in Taiwan than US/Europe (I’m speaking about veganism, of course😉). Pronoun usage in Chinese will have to evolve in order to be inclusive, right?

To elucidate - pronouns in Mandarin are traditionally gender inclusive (他 你 ) however, we developed feminine versions within the past 100 years, both as part of the feminist movement and as a response to increasing globalization (i.e. when translating for subtitles), which are only differentiated in writing - the pronunciation is the same - 她 妳. Therefore, it is important to make the distinction in correspondences, reports, etc.
