The content of the song is similar to that of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads Blues" and the legend of Robert Johnson himself. The regional folklore is that Johnson "went down to the crossroads" and sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his talent. That legend has roots in hoodoo and voodoo and the West African religions that predate hoodoo and voodoo. This song does not mention him specifically, but the "blues that came walking like a man" is a reference to Papa Legba.
