likewise, changed me from a pseudo metalhead into someone who realised that music does move in mysterious ways! My fav band on the 4AD roster. Still listen now.
I saw these guys supporting the Pixies in Queens Hall, Edinburgh about 30 years ago. Two of the best bands around at the time. Sometimes you get lucky with support bands too!
Me too. It was 95 or 96? In some place that was never a club before. Like some ballroom? There was no stage. They just played on the floor. There were maybe 15 or 20 of us. I couldn't believe it was real.
I was invited down to 4AD to pick up my copy of ‘Lonely is an Eyesore’ wooden box set. Handed to me by Vaughan Oliver himself. I still have it to this day.
One of the bands which directly influenced me to form the band and start making music and I've been making for last 31 years. Thank you Wolfgang Press, Mick, Marc, Andy and 4AD.
"I wouldn't say that I have found what I was looking for... " Oh, dear! For 30 years this song has never left my head. Btw: if you haven't read "Facing the other way", do it! It's not smoothest written book I've read but it's worth the effort reading.
It seems they gained more exposure via This Mortal Coil. This is far mellower than their typical work. Try Kansas, Shut That Door, & Dig A Hole. I also like the two albums they put out after they left 4AD. Seriously talented band! I'll never forget the title "I Am The Crime".
"Lonely Is An Eyesore", MTV'S "120 Minutes" was pivotal in my life. It showed me the gold to the left of the dial and removed me from the shit that is Top 40 music.
Agreed, they played 120 minutes even in the late 2000's on vh1 classic, and I discovered some stuff, you would also like some death/dark metal stuff, very experimental.
Great cover! And Queer is a seriously groovy album. I love Funky Little Demons as well, but I think a lot of fans thought they went a bit commercial and dropped them. They never sold out. Songs like Christianity & Executioner were never designed to be chart toppers!
Saw them in Kansas City promoting Queer. Very small club (The Shadow), but a killer performance. I was praying they'd play Shut That Door, and they did!
Oh how much I have always wanted the ltd edition box - I have a friend who managed to buy one which almost makes it worse for me as now it’s a tactile experience - one I can’t have in my collection! I love you 4AD thank you for years of sound, radiant and dark alike 🙏
Does anybody know how I could contact Michael Allen he is my fuckin hero i'm only 20 so I missed out on the whole existence of this band but they are my #1 inspiration can someone anyone please float me some contact info and bless my life forever
He’s going to be at the Rema Rema in conversation at Rough Trade, Ladbroke Grove tonight. Maybe find Dorothy Max Prior on Facebook and ask her to pass a message on. Don’t think he does social media.
It represents a hangover. But the lyrics tell a hidden story. In the lyrics the protagonist plants the tree of bigotry... but the song is called "Cut The Tree". Deep thoughts the morning after.
Gawd, this brings back memories. The Lonely Is An Eyesore compilation was a game changer to me. One of my most treasured pieces of vinyl.
Wow. Your comment brought back memories - Good memories!

Love, love, love! x
My face is history, it’s never forgiven me.
I've always loved this track and video. I've always thought it is one of the most beautiful black and white music videos ever made.
Just found Lonely is an eyesore limited edition last christmas 😻
Oh yes. What a band. Saw them live in Philly so long ago - intense and fantastic.

Damn right. I used to have a stack of VHS recordings of 120 minutes. I miss those even though they were crap quality.

4AD Forever !
What a treasure. Like a lost Bela Tárr video, whirlwind and the shroom epic tail
Feeling the magic in this song...
I was introduced to this band via their cover of Mama Told Me Not To Come. It's nice to hear them again.
Great cover! And Queer is a seriously groovy album. I love Funky Little Demons as well, but I think a lot of fans thought they went a bit commercial and dropped them. They never sold out. Songs like Christianity & Executioner were never designed to be chart toppers!
This takes me back thirty years in an instant!
Right? Hahaha- me too
Lonely is an eyesore... for those who were doubtful about becoming 4AD fans forever... that was the last thing they needed to convince themselves!

Ivo 4AD and 23 Envelope something to aspire to as an artist and dream about in my 20s
why isnt this band more recognised
none of them are sadly, but thats the occult, HIDDEN.
Epic video beyond weirdness and by far the bands best song, so good.
To think I saw TWP on stage in 1991… The chance of a lifetime.
Lucky enough to see them twice, second time, I got to meet them backstage...
Saw them in Kansas City promoting Queer. Very small club (The Shadow), but a killer performance. I was praying they'd play Shut That Door, and they did!
