    Replaced the transmission and belt today using the video instructions. The video and instructions were most helpful. I had to go purchase a square driver to remove and install the three screws on the belt guide attached to the transmission. The #2 square drive was the size that fit these three screws. Thanks for posting the video!

    What parts do I likely need to replace if only one of my wheels occasionally locks up when pulling backward? The mower works fine moving forward. The gears on my rear wheels look OK and seem to turn fine when raised off the ground. With weight on them they seem to want to lock up. I have a 2010 model 20332. Thanks.

      +William Maniscalco If it is the wheel that is driven by the transmission then we would suspect a transmission problem and the whole assembly would need replacement. www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Transmission/1219178/2705544?TLSID=1773

    Thanks for the video. This helped me to replace the transmission on my Cub Cadet E18J. In my case there was a plastic sleeve over the axel and that prevented the assembly from sliding out. Due to a welded cross bar, I could not find a solution. So, I just cut out the plastic sleeve and then everything went as shown in the video. I figured I'd mention it here in case someone else hits the same problem. I'll amend my comment here if I find out later that the sleeve was really needed.

      The problem is not with the transmission itself; but the pinion gears on each end of the shaft, when they don't get greased every season the pinions have one-way clutches in them to engage the forward motion of the drive shaft to turn the wheels in a forward motion. Grease those pinion gears and the shaft they ride on and problem will not occur

    I'm having the same issues as Stacy on my 2010 model 20332 mower. Wheels bind up backing up, and grinding noise when engaging transmission. I have changed out the tension spring on the handle, the transmission, both rear wheels, drive belt and drive pulley. When adjusting the cable, if I take out all the slack as directed, the wheels spin even without pushing the handle. So I have left a small bit of slack. The only thing I haven't changed out are the two brass gears at the ends of the trans shift. They appear to be ok, since they only contact the plastic gears on the inside of the wheels. Any ideas on why this is still happening?

    • @repairclinic
      @repairclinic  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The transmission shaft should turn freely unless the drive pulley is being turned. The transmission sometimes will stay locked up after releasing the drive handle until you push the mower forward a little and them pull it back. The cable should have a little slack so it is not trying to turn the transmission pulley all the time Only when the drive handle is depressed.

    Our 2004 (model 20017) mower has lost the self-propel and has a grinding noise when the bar is pushed down (personal pace). We replaced the belt and adjusted the cable and still have the problem. Would this be a transmission problem? I noticed one of your replies about the back wheels locking up when being pulled backwards and that has been a problem we've had the past few years as well. P.S. I wish our mower was as easy to disassemble as in your videos! Ours isn't designed as well. :\

    • @repairclinic
      @repairclinic  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the gears in the rear wheels and the drive gears are OK, the transmission is most likely the problem.

    Bad gas will not cause the no spark condition. You might have got a little extra oil in the cylinder and fouled out the spark plug. I would try a new spark plug, and if you still get no spark check the flywheel grounding arm. If it is touching the flywheel even when you pull the control lever back it will ground out the spark.

    will this help my wheels bind when they go backwards

    • @repairclinic
      @repairclinic  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the wheels are locking up and not turning when pulling the mower backwards it may be the transmission causing this issue. You will get a little resistance from rear wheels but they should still turn backwards without too much effort. If the belt is trying to grab a little this will also make the rear wheels harder to pull backwards. Make sure the pulley on the transmission turns free when the drive lever is not engaged.

      @@repairclinic The pinion gears have one-way clutches in them they only should turn in a forward motion.
      That is why you can pull back on the mower to back up. Lack of grease on the shaft and inside the pinion gears causes the condition that John Eroyan has. Grease the shaft and pinions each season and you will solve the problem from happening.

      If the pulley is turning, the drive shaft should also turn. Make sure the belt is not slipping. If that all looks good, the gears in the transmission are most likely stripped and the transmission will need to be replaced

    I have to hand it to the Toro at least they're using bearings unlike the lower-grade Husqvarna mowers like the lc221 which does not and even if you are actual axles are in good condition will start wearing through and then bad things will start happening to gears and everything down the line

    So glad I have a Snapper self propelled instead of this MTD junk. It took me 10 minutes and $6 to replace its drive wheel. The Snappers cast iron gear drive rearends last several lifetimes too since they are designed so one can actually do maintenance on it such as changing it's grease & seals when needed. The life of these plastic gear rearends are measured only in months to a few years. They are designed as throw aways from the start, most costing at least $100+ uninstalled once shipping is applied.
    No self propelled unit made ever compared to the Snapper rear drive design. I would bet a 20 year old maintained Snapper will still outlast these plastic geared units about 10 to 1 as 30-40 year old Snappers are still used daily by lawn care businesses in every city. They just slap a new engine on them and go right back to work over and over again.
    These mowers shown here are absolutely pathetic!

Everyone's situation will vary, and it's up to you to deal with rust, wear, dirt, etc. on your individual mower. Showing a grease-covered, dirty mower would make it a lot tougher to see the parts, and not help the training one bit. I'm just very grateful this video exists; it helped me a ton.
