    For Clank lovers, things that are different from the base game:
    2:21 - Lockpicks
    2:35 - Exploring the dungeon
    3:02 - Artifacts
    3:45 - Treaasures
    3:57 - Portals
    4:07 - Shrines
    4:20 - Ghosts
    4:26 - Prisoners
    7:20 - Market
    7:44 - Prisoners II
    8:15 - Ghosts II
    Let me know if I missed anything :)

    The flow chart boxes and paths could have been made in to something more artistic to help with the theme.

      Exactly. Everything about this new version seems better except the tile art, or lack of. Why arent there dungeon backgrounds on these tiles? These symbolic nodes with one color backgrounds takes away a lot of immersion, and just look terrible. Huge oversight.

    Helpful tip. Do not dilute the Catacombs deck with your other cards if you have prior Clank. There are 16 cards that are very catacombs specific and the 100 card deck is 20 monsters, 9 devices, 7 gems, 23 companions and 41 other cards. Because of lock picks and manipulating the dungeon I would not dilute more than the 100 cards. 8 monsters, 1 device, 3 gems, and 4 companions are catacombs needed. So if you keep those you can mess with the other 84 from other sets. I have all the expansions and I leave out the cards that even mention curses or flooded caverns. The opposite is true of you play base clank or an expansion. Remove the 16 Catacomb cards
    The Catacombs is the better game. FYI if you have prior clank sets you will need to sleeve the cards as the coloring is different on the backs. New one is a reddish brown old cards a yellow brown

    Part of me likes that this is so variable, which is great for replay. At the same time, part of me likes the other Clank games because it actually let me plan my route and plan ahead. This led to really zippy turns. I think with Catacombs, you'll have to think a bit more on the fly. Still looks good though, great review!

      I feel like having no planned route does ruin some of the strategy in the game. But it's already not the type of game where the best player wins. So not sure, probably need to play it myself to see if the exploration is worth more extra time and less long-term planning.

    Tom plays many many games and has played many many games of Clank, Clank legacy etc... so something that adds a new twist anf mixes it up is of course going to appeal to him (and Roy for similar reasons). I feel like for most people if you own Clank and expansions already there really isn't a need to get this unless you've played it out and are tired of it.

      Which version would you recommend if you've never played any Clank game before? Tom and Roy suggest getting this one even for total Clank newbies, but perhaps their views are a little skewed precisely because they've played a ton of the earlier games/expansions and preferring the novelty of this newer one (as you mentioned)

    • @ismount
      @ismount 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@applewitheveryoneI'm pretty late to the party but I recently got into Clank! and decided on Clank! In Space. The general consensus seems to be that In Space is essentially Clank! but better balanced and with more replayability. There are also 3 expansions for In Space already, so there is a lot of room to grow if you want. Also, apparently the game length of the original Clank! can be really short if one player just wants to get in and get out ("rush strategy"), kind of ruining the game for the rest of the group.
      Catacombs presents an element of luck with respect to the board layout which is seen as a negative for people who enjoy the route/deck planning aspect of Clank! and Clank! In Space.
      I haven't played the original or Catacombs, though. This is just what my research has turned up.
      I'm super happy with Clank! In Space, for what it's worth.

    I've played Clank and Clank Legacy and I love them - I would play Legacy again and I don't feel that way about any other legacy or campaign game.
    I bought Clank in Space and a couple expansions, and I think it fixes most of my quibbles with Clank. I'm still hoping for Clank in Space Legacy (or would that be Clank Legacy in Space?) If it ever comes out, I will buy or back it in a heartbeat.
    And with all of that, I'm sooooo tempted to pick this up. Maybe CiS is distinct enough to have both in active rotation, but Catacombs could easily win out just from previews and reviews.

      I adored Clank! in Space.. so much so that I actually regretted aggressively expanding the original Clank. People I play with though tend to prefer the fantasy theme and boards over the SF ones.
      So far I'm not too impressed with this one - I like the gameplay change, but it also looks ugly and I think it might be a bit harder to teach. I guess I'll stick with Clank for now, maybe finally check out what that Legacy one is all about.... :)

    I got into the hobby 2-3 years ago, and the original Clank has been on my must-get list the entire time, but I somehow have still never played any Clank (turns out there are A LOT of great games out there). The idea behind this one that the dungeon plays out differently every time, and you really are exploring a map where you don't know what's coming next sounds like it all but makes the original obsolete. Depends what you're looking for, of course; the idea of knowing ahead of time the optimal strategic route doesn't appeal to me at all, but for others, that might be the whole reason to play. I've got this pre-ordered at my FLGS.

    • @VaultBoy13
      @VaultBoy13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was never an optimal route with the original due to the random card market. The random tiles will probably make this version a little more luck based. Although, the portals probably help to reduce that.

  • @Carsten_de_1981

    Does it really add that much to Clank! that I need to pick this up? I try to be reasonable.... I own Clank! In! Space! and every of its expansions and haven't play all of them often enough yet. This feels like it has a LOT more luck in it. Also, I use clank for when I feel like the few extra rules would be too many for a newer gamer. I would be concerned with all the extra rules here, this probably a little more complex than clank in space.

    • @KMReviews
      @KMReviews ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I played with some new people. It’s not to much. To me the tiles coming out is like betrayal at house on the hill. You draw one and orient it how you want. Simple. You play every card in your hand and get everything it shows. Buy power, movements and attack. People grasp all that pretty easily. You can just teach the tiles individually as they come out.

    • @ericswearingenmusic9967
      @ericswearingenmusic9967 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the tiles are really no big deal to deal with. The artifacts tend to spread out, and all players can usually discover a pretty similar amount of stuff to each other. What it does help with is players who have played 2000 times and know what route they will take.. it gets rid of that meta gaming stuff, which sucks for new players. It is no more complex than clank in space. All the stuff you draw, you just look up on a cheat sheet. You don’t even have to know what anything does until you come upon it

    Man, I was excited about this, but I don't like that the artwork in the tiles is pretty much non-existent. To me, having some sense of immersion is important, and I feel Catacombs loses that. Also, it feels more random, as somebody else already said. Unfortunately, this is a pass to me.

    • @DrMcFly28
      @DrMcFly28 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I think this game works best for people who have played one of the original Clanks a lot so they understand the change the best and can contrast it with their previous experiences; for newcomers the static board with lovely art might still have a much stronger aesthetic draw.

After Clank in Space and acquisitions incorporated I see no need for this game. And withoud these in my collection would rather buy the legacy one.

    • @KMReviews
      @KMReviews ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it also makes it more of a real dungeon crawl. You pick a path and don’t know what’s gonna be there. Plus you have the choice on how to orient it to benefit you the most. Plus there’s a ton of transportation points tk be able to move around the map.
      Plus if you really wanted to, you could just make a custom board out of the tiles ahead of time and not worry about drawing more. Etc.

      This looks like what should've been introduced with Clank Legacy. But, maybe they were too worried to deviate from the Clank formula with that one.

    The shop is random, your deck is random, the dragon attacks are random. Now you want the map to be random too?

    I own original clank and all expansions. To me this seems like their way at a 2nd Ed . While I applaud 👏🏻 because it does feel like I totally got cheated . Like most 2nd Ed . Games .

    I remember everyone raving about clank, buying it and ever my casual gamer wife finding it overly simple. We returned it. Have the other versions have more interesting cards / choices?

    • @DuGStp
      @DuGStp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sure there’s expansions and clank in space expansions that add more interesting decisions. But, you might be fooling yourself if you think your wife is both a casual gamer AND finds clank overly simple. I guess that depends on the definition of casual gamer.

    15 seconds of animated intro, ooof. It's fun and gorgeous, but I'm not sure it was a good idea to make it this long.

      Several of the old intros were longer and arguably less engaging. Why not just skip ahead if you don't want to watch it every time?

    My biggest worry that even with the tiered Artifact approach the game would become too luck-based. Admittedly the game was always a bit beer & pretzels, with random Dungeon card draw often having a huge impact on the game, but in this one it's now luck squared.
    Also.. I think it looks a bit too abstract and ugly. Clank! boards always felt a bit "busy", especially to non-gamers, but the extra art made the entire experience a bit more tame. This one just looks like an abstract mess.

    PURPLE and BLUE are the colors they picked?????? Seriously? Those are TERRIBLE colorblind colors to pick. Red is by far the most common color blind issue, and as any preschooler knows, purple is just a reddish blue.

      Why? What do you find unappealing in them? Which one do you dislike the most?

    • @retroarcadefan
      @retroarcadefan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@revimfadli4666 Most deckbuilding board games start all players out with the same hand of unappealing, garbage cards that each player has to try to slowly eliminate over the course of the game. The endless shuffling of small decks is also annoying. The only deckbuilders that have any appeal to me are those where the deckbuilding is done before you start the game (giving you a deck that you actually wanted to play). The repetitive similar beginnings of all of these is like forcing someone to watch foreign language soap operas for hours when they wanted to watch something else and slowly adding content they desired.
