THE ADVENTURE OF PEEP, THE BABY HUMMINGBIRD

- I came across this little guy peeping away on my lunch break. Long story short, we became friends over sugar water. He grew to love sitting on my hand, and cozied up in my palm a lot. He wouldn't let me walk away once, and landed on my shoe. I convinced him to stay. It's nice in the park. :) It did break my heart that he didn't want me to leave. I didn't want to, either.
It was a safe park in a nice area with minimal foot traffic, and no large predators, so on a local vet's advice, I'd left him in the same are I'd found him. Before I left, I saw him fly up to a low tree branch, so I knew if any danger came around, he'd be able to flutter off.
I took him to a local vet. She looked him over, said he was healthy, and that I should put him back where I found him. The vet gave me some good advice to take care of Peep just in case I needed to take him to a local wildlife preserve. At his age, he was in the later stages of learning how to fly, and his parents should have been close by. Hummingbirds are territorial. She gave him a clean bill of health. She advised that I take him back, wait a couple of hours, then return, and if he was still there, then I could take him to a local wildlife sanctuary. She gave me the name and contact number just in case. In those 2 hours, I'd looked up how to take care of a hummingbird in case I needed to keep him over night in my home before driving him up to the sanctuary where others more qualified and knowledgeable could care for him, and make sure he stayed in the wild where he belongs.
We'll be keeping our eyes out for this little cutie pie. :)
Peep got into my heart so fast. :) I miss Peep, but I know he'll be just fine. He is a tiny, but strong little birb.
updated 1 year later Every time I'm feeling like life is too much, I think about Peep and smile. If he can be so small and survive, so can I.

We found a baby hummingbird in this same situation in our backyard. We kept him for about a week, feeding him sugar water by a syringe. He was so adorable. I would just hold the dropper down into the aquarium and he would float up and put his little tongue in the opening. When he started buzzing up and trying to come out of his temporary home, we took the aquarium outside and opened it. He flew up, circled a couple times over our yard, and then took off. It was a fun experience caring for him.

There's some good advice buried in the comments of this video on how to care for lost birds if you find them. Since this video posted, I'd found 4 injured sparrows.
Two of them were badly injured, and despite my care, passed away in my hands soon after finding them. I didn't even have time to take them to the animal shelter. All I could do was offer what comfort I could until that happened. My heart still breaks for those two.
Another one broke its beak and couldn't eat, but could fly just fine. I noticed its behavior wasn't normal. It wasn't running away from people. That's when I got on my hands and knees and noticed its beak.
It hopped up to me for help. I put it in a small box next to my desk at work, and fed it a tiny bit by hand along with some water it drank from a droplet on my finger. My boss let me go early to take it to the animal shelter. On the way over, it flew out of the box and perched on the dashboard to watch the drive, probably thinking that's the fastest it's ever flown. :)
Aside from its beak, it was healthy. The people at the animal shelter said broken beaks were treatable, and someone from a local wildlife sanctuary would come get it to help rehabilitate it.
The last one slammed head first into my bedroom window loud enough to get my attention. I had my headphones on. It was trying to escape harassment by a couple of crows. I picked it up out of the garden, afraid that the impact had killed it. Thankfully, it came to, but it was disoriented. I sat on the lawn and held it to keep the crows at bay, giving it gentle, reassuring pets while it recovered in safety. A couple of minutes after the crows left the area, I set it down on the grass. It looked at me, chirped, and flew up into the nearby tree.
Peep was healthy and fine enough to fly a little, so he more than likely lived a normal hummingbird life.
I bet you have problems with animals being attracted to you. :) Thanks for helping them, even if all you can do is be there for them.
how tf did it break its beak? Crows probably got the other one.
@@DirtyDanAvidan I honestly have no idea. A fight? It got stuck in something? It's a guess.

@@Josh_u I'm a Mom of a 29 yo and a 24 yo, and I taught them that all life, in it's own way, is worthy of our respect and consideration. When my 29 yo Daughter was 3 or 4, she came running up to me so excited about something she'd found in a deep, water-filled trench made by concrete trucks when we were building our house during a very wet Spring. I did a double-take (putting it mildly) when I came eye to eye with a young alligator snapping turtle cupped within my Daughter's delicate palms, but managed to keep my *excuse me* shit together as we put her/him in one of our ponds, and for all I know he/she is still there. for anyone finding a baby bird like this in the future: if it has feathers and is just chilling on the side of the road or something, leave it be. it's parents are around and feeding it and teaching it to fly. it's called a fledgling
Are you sure? I thought you were suppose to take baby birds and dunk them in water.
@@bfrfoxtrot I think that's the last thing you'd want to do?! No, if you find a healthy fledgling, you should leave it alone since its parents are probably around. If you find an injured one, you should call a wildlife rehabilitation center and keep an eye on the bird to make sure it's safe. You can even place the bird under a bush or in an open paper bag (on its side) so that it can stay someplace cool and protected before rescuers arrive. Don't give it any water or food. I understand that this girl had good intentions and wanted to help the bird, but just putting out a dish of sugar water was NOT a good idea. Baby birds won't eat out of a dish like that anyway and the bird easily could have drowned or had its feathers coated with sugar.
MB my thoughts and post exactly.

Lovely video. And a very sweet conversation with Peep.
Very cute video. Peep looks like a young hummingbird who just got out of the nest. 🐤 I know this because Peep chirps a lot, like chicks would do in the nest to be fed by their parents, and that Peep's feathers seem "fluffy" and not fully grown and/or developed yet.

I had a canary named Peep when I was a kid. Love your video. Hummingbirds are so awesome!
Peep solidarity.
Sugar water on the feathers can cause feather loss. Never ever feed hummers with open containers.
This is pretty cute, glad you helped it out; brings me back to when I had to help a young bird get out of my complex because it couldn’t tell there was a window.
Peep was most likely a fledgling and most likely figured out how to fly and flew away.
He was. The vet recognized the growth of his feathers, said this was normal behavior for hummingbirds in the later stages of flying, and that he would be fine. He was already learning how to fly pretty well. He just needed some more time. I trusted the professional's knowledge.
@@nemo-x You can actually hear the parents in the background calling back to it. The parents were near. I'm glad you left it with it's parents. As they stay with the parents to learn how to find food.

I was wondering if anyone would see that. This was during the PewDiePie vs T-Series war earlier this year.
God bless you for helping him.
if you weren't keeping an eye after him right when you put him back in the park there is a great chance that peep was hunted by cats or some other animal.
Peep was a fledgling in a developed stage, that means that when you had found him he was probably learning to fly and his parents were probably near by. next time do not take away the fledgling. you should have waited aside hidden, to see if his parents come to his aid. in case the fledgling cannot fly to the trees you should put him on a high branch to protect him from wild animals and again wait aside hidden to see if his parents come to his aid. only after those actions failed you should help the fledgling by taking him to a local wildlife preserve.
My fav species of birds!! Indeed magical ones they are!!
you're a wonderful human being, mel. thank you for caring about nature's tiniest bird. peep stole my heart.
She should just left it alone. People need to understand that nature will take care of itself. If you interfere your destroying its ability to evolve. Nature can take care of itself without us interfering.

I hope its feathers didn’t get all sticky from getting in the sugar water
I was just thinking that
I love your voice and peep!
Hummingbirds focus on reds and oranges mostly. If you want to feed a humming bird from a cup, use a red or orange cup with the sweet water.
If not that, one *tiny* drop of red food coloring for one cup of sweet water works as well.
Good advice for the future, and for any who find little hummingbirds. Thank you. :)
Red food coloring is not safe for hummingbirds. Check out Cornell University's information on birds or Hummingbird Whisperer on fb. Sugar water on the wings will kill the bird so there should be a lid on it or a proper feeder.
Sorry Browning, but my experience with hummingbirds yielded different results.
Granted, there are types of food coloring that are toxic, but those are found in the old styles and have since been outlawed by the FDA.
I’ve had hummingbirds take from colored sweet water and return with no issues whatsoever.
I saved an immature male hummer I called Verde. The year after I fed him sugar water, he came up to my back porch and hovered there, looking inside into my kitchen, knowing I fed hummers like him every year. Very intelligent creatures.

my grandpas brother recently passed away and his favorite bird was a humming bird and recently around where i live this small humming bird always stops by and looks inside our windows in our living room to look at my grandpa for about 5 seconds then flies away. I would really like to think that that small humming bird is my grandpas brother reincarnated and every so often he comes over to check up on his brother and when he does come to say hi it just makes my grandpas day :)
It could be a small messenger letting you know he's ok, or he's checking up on you to make sure you're ok.
Yes, I have heard that hummingbirds do tend to be messengers.
They are small and fragile, but they are strong. Maybe in this time, your grandpa is feeling fragile, and the hummingbird is there to remind him that he's strong, and it'll be ok.

Poor guy looking for his parents :(
I'm glad you took him to the vet and asked her for advice, I also hope he found his way back to his family, good job and thanks for the cuteness👍unfortunately we can't keep every cute thing that crosses our path, while it's sad you had to say goodbye it gave him a chance to be free in the wild
Peep should have been protected aaaa I thought the video owner must have ensured his safety sigh
I followed the advice of the veterinarian. If Peep were still there when I went back, that would mean his parents weren't around, considering it would have been half a day. I would have taken him to the local animal sanctuary where he could be cared for by professionals, and learn to live and integrate into the wild.
It did break my heart when I was walking away and he landed on my foot as if to say, "please don't go." I truly wanted to bring him home, but the best thing for Peep was to let him stay in the park with his parents. He was in the later stages of learning how to fly. I know he'll be just fine. :)
Loved the text bits. Thanks for the laughs.
