Going to Fushimi Inari Taisha is a good decision any day of the week, but those who want to combine it with a more festive environment should drop by for the Motomiya Festival!
This two day event is a lively summer celebration that consists of the Yomiya-sai (Sat.) and Motomiya-sai (Sun.). Available to view all day but ramping up from 5pm, thousands of lanterns scattered all over Mt. Inari are lit along the shrine paths, and beautifully painted paper lanterns can be enjoyed around the main shrine area at the base of the mountain.
Visitors to the 2017 Motomiya-sai were able to forget the heat when treated to live performances by the neo-Japanesque band Rin Hitoe (rin-japanesque....) and taiko drum groups, complete with the chance to end the night by participating in a seasonal bon odori dance!

I remember climbing the steps of Fushimi Inari and feeling _powerful_ intangible forces surrounding me like they were expecting my coming. Every torii gate I passed under felt like a fear I conquered or a goal I achieved in life. It was the most ecstatic religious experience of my life.

Fushimi Inari Taisha was one of my favourite shrines when I visited Kyoto last year. I can't wait to get back and explore it again when I move to Kyoto next year. There is so much to see and do in the area,

There's certainly a lot to see, particularly the many inner shrines up the mountain!
