How to Burn Leaves easily, Gary J

  • In this video, I will show you a simple way to burn leaves. First call the Forestry unit and get a burn permit. You do not want too big of a pile of leaves. You want to clear an area round your leaf pile so the fire can't spread to other leaves. I use a leaf blower for this. I make a round pile and put like a donut hole in the middle and light the center of that. Use a long stem cooking grill lighter. In this video I show you an old fashion way of starting a fire with a piece of flint, steel and char cloth. Do not use gasoline, kerosene or other accelerates. Bad things can happen to you. The leaves will burn outward in a ripple effect from lighting them in the center (the leaves catch up quickly in just 1 minute). The leaves on the bottom will not burn until you flip them over like a pancake. They may be damp. A 5 gallon bucket of water is not a bad idea to have close by. Also I wait until you have had 2-3 days of warm weather to help dry out the leaves. If the wind is 5 mph, It can cause these fires to get out of control very quickly. I like 1-2 mph wind the most. Do not leave fires unattended. Good luck, and be careful.

I never thought I would need instruction on burning a pile of leaves. But, here I am buried in leaves at my new house in Ga.

Thanks for the comment! Be very careful, if the wind is blowing it can spread really quick out of control. Congratulations on your home in Ga. I live about 35 miles West of Augusta Ga. Take care!!

Diesel works great too. It doesn't combust like gasoline. I just started burning my leaves this week for the first time in 2 years lol First layer of leave were stuck to the ground from years of not blowing them. This new batch of leaves blew away easily. Gasoline will combust from the fumes, so make sure you don't use that.

I need someone like you to hold my hand. I’m so scared of fires. I watch my neighbors but I’m still scared to try

Great video...sometimes what you think you knew, there is a still a better way...virtually smokeless fire and leaves are known to create lots of smoke. I don't get a burn permit, but plan a night to stay awake and burn late or early in the morning. This keeps Karens out of your business, as they are sleeping after living in the dizzying moral high ground.

Now all that ash would be in the ground to grow new plants? Ashes would be great for soil.

This is fine for dryer leaves...but how about WET leaves.....especially when the monsoon season of the PNW has just set in??

    • @knightingalesaid

I don’t know. I would cut the trees down so I wouldn’t have leaves to deal with. I have done that. Good luck friend.

@@knightingalesaid Thanks, but those same trees are worth a million bucks each Summer when they offer tremendous shade at our place.
I guess I gotta take the good with the bad. ;-)

I am dealing with that. I'm going to make a big wood fire in a fire pit and slowly feed the leaves into it. Or... wait until they dry out again. Lol!

You may have to do burns in increments. Burn the top layer, and ounce the lower layer of leaves have dried up, pile them up and burn them as well.
