I was so shocked when the coupling rods jammed, I genuinely thought we’d get a full marks loco. Even with its minor faults I would definitely be happy to get one. By the way, in accordance of the law of TH-cam since you said you can make a J27 in your 3D printer you now have to actually do it now 😂😀. Excellent review as always Sam.
Yeah me too - everything was perfect and then that happened... ultimate irony! haha that is true... maybe it's time I tried something like that?! Still working on getting the coaches printed mind you ;) Thanks for watching, Sam :)
A word of caution before your viewers get the spanners on to their crank-pins - small screws like that can easily be over-tightened causing the threads to strip out and permanently damaging the wheel. As other comments have suggested, a simple solution is to use a small drop of thread-locker such as Loctite 222 on the threaded part of each screw, then they need only be gently tightened and after a few minutes will be securely fixed. Thread locker won't affect the operation of the coupling rods at all and you can still lubricate the pins. They won't vibrate or twist free in use but can still be unscrewed, using a spanner or pliers, without damage to the threads.

That "sheep noise" as you called is an issue I saw another TH-camr having on a different model so it may not be the same thing but for this other TH-camr it was the flywheel being alittle loose and vibrating
"There are proper turned metal bearings on every single driving axle. So even cheaper locos like this have them." Lol that sounded like a dig at the more expensive square bearing locos.
I've got a J27, ordered it first class the moment it came out. Crankpins are secure, even after over an hour of running (running in), the chimney was secure too! I would like to see other people comment on theirs, cause mine didnt have these issues
I’ve just bought one of these, I got the red lined sound equipped version with running number 1214 and I love it. It did have a couple of issues out the box, the tender / loco coupler was slightly bent upwards meaning the tender wheels were not fully turning, easily fixed. Also, the pickups on the tender needed adjusting as they were slightly too far from the wheels meaning I got a drop out over a crossover. It seems a lot slower than yours when I run on DCC but maybe it will loosen up (it’s had 30-mins in both directions at 50%) the crawl is excellent and I don’t have the weird noise that yours had. Very happy with it, I’ve also got the N7 on preorder and they should be lovely running together
Another great review Sam. Just taken delivery of a J27 and am delighted with the purchase. As a newcomer to the hobby and somewhat lost initially, your thorough and unbiased reviews have helped a great deal. Thank you !
Great review Sam , keep reviewing Oxford rail products, and definetly want to see the new J26 and the Oxford Rail crane that are eventually coming out for sure
Enjoyed that Sam, well timed after the last stinker! Just to say you were not over-harsh at all with the star for the crank pins. At this price many newcomers to the hobby could pick up this loco, people who are very unlikely to know how to deal with loose crank-pins, let along have the tools to do so, let alone non-standard ones! However, when all is said and done, that’s a well priced loco that embarrasses other manufactures. Best.
I bought a J27(Red Lined) following your excellent review, outstanding straight out of the box. As with yours however a couple of the pickups needed attention.
U can get a black marker-pen any time if u want to "hide" the axels. I do it too time to time, but on more colorful locos guessing the right tint can be hard.
Or for a finish that won't rub or wear off, perhaps you could use a "Cold Blue" chemical bluing compound for steel? (it's called bluing but the finish is black) It brushes on and then has to be rinsed off after ~20 minutes, provides a rust proof finish. Just an 💡.
Hi Sam, Another great review. I have just received my J27 and I have previously purchased the N7. I agree entirely with your comments and your judgement. I blacked the axle ends with a little trial and error to make it match. After your crank mishaps I have checked mine, no faults apparent. Keep up the good work, Mike H
(to sam) I have a 50 yr old version I got it not too long ago and it is in great shape HO scale I can definitely tell how far model trains have come in detail.
Appart from the motor/drive noise and the loose crank pins it looks another great loco from Oxford Rail. I can't wait to see the breakdown crane they are bringing out as we know their wagons are just as good as their locomotives.
A keeper and a beautiful, no frills model. A powerful loco. We just havta remember to tighten up those bolts and gently pry those steps (if needed) just a wee bit before running it. Great video as always.
Got mine from a little publicised but excellent model shop, in Kings Lynn, at a very good price. No problems, with the model, but it does highlight all the bad joints, in my track. Top Marks to Oxford Models.
My pre-ordered J27 arrived this week. What a superb model. Nothing dropped off mine thank goodness and I did not notice the axle colour until you mentioned it in your review. Might have to buy myself another version at those prices :-)
Seems like a star is born .... possibly .... nice review, and quite an impressive model. Loved the cab detail, particularly the water level gauges - this seems to be the 'latest' detail they're all going for. Al.
This is really outstanding for the price. Even though 00 scale seems to be most of the time cheaper than H0 on the continent, this model is huge value for the money. I like loose screws more than tight rivets. I can tighten screws when needed, but I can not remove and replace rivets. I have a loco that made the same sheep sound, but it was well over 20 years old when I bought it, so it needed an inspection anyway. A tiny drop of oil on the motor bearings made it quiet.
I want one and I want it now. Oh! Oxford please do not go down the same road as Hornby in Q.C. You are an amazing company and are showing others how things should be made. Sam, thank you for the great review. Martin. (Thailand)
I’m so excited to watch this review! Hmmm… add a bell-paire firebox and extend the front running board to fit a pony truck and you’ve essentially got a James!
HI Sam, great review! Just a point about side to side movement of tension lock couplings: this is an ANTI-feature. TLs have their own built-in sideways "slack" and adding more just makes them less likely to couple correctly. The NEM pocket was designed for European couplings, which need to be free to move sideways. Putting TLs in those slots is a compromise, luckily it mostly works, but the stiffer the better.
oxford rail are becoming a serious contender to the larger brands. hope they keep this level of finish on all their models and remain at decent pricing. they need to increase their range of different models
If its Oxford, you already know that whatever it is will jam itself into the top 5. I really love their slogan, its so much more humble and honest than other companies **cough, Bachmann, cough**
Very nice! I've got one of these on the way too. My first Oxford loco so I'm looking forward to seeing what the hype is about but it looks like it doesn't disappoint. A shame about the coupling rod jamming though, such a silly mistake and so easy for them to rectify. Great video Sam! 😃
Not only that, but had his own real train and locos, all his own and used a great deal during WW2, some of the bespoke coaches were put into civilian use after the war, some surviving to this day...
This is awesome, especially for those who don't mind doing a little mechanical work! I might have chamfered the inner edge of those steps with a small file, and locktited the crankpins..
Hi Sam, I recently got my J27 with sound. Only just got round to unboxing as I currently do not have an OO layout. In the process of dismantling my N Gauge. I do have a short length of test track in OO with a rolling road so decided to check it out. I had the same issues as you. the funnel was broken off ( well unglued not broken ) also the water cover in the tender. It was very reluctant to run until I adjusted the pickups, I won't know how successful this is until I get it on a full layout. The sound is OK if a little quiet. I love function 15 ( the uncouple shuffle ) looks like that will work on KD's once I get it all running although, to be honest, that is probably another 6 months away at least. Other than those issues a ver nice Loco for the price.
Fantastic. I'm not going to pick one up as it's not the right area but hope Oxford do well on this one and make more such locos. Great for younger enthusiasts and shames the big ticket manufactures at the same time with the great mechanism and the cab looked fantastic. The glazed water meters are the real highlight for me :)
Athearn I think is the closest we have, but their Genesis line is definitely up there in cost, Model Power wasn't terrible on price/detail ratio but they were recently bought out I think
If a problem like the crank pins are loose and the causes the loco to not work properly around corners send it back and have it replace and dont mess with it as it losses the warranty on the loco and sends an message to Oxford rail that this example was unexpectedly to the customer
I think you should expand your railway. Expand it as in you make new locations, you add narrow gauge locomotives for the model railway and also if you want to, you can make a show with your model trains and you can give them fun and sometimes cool names.
You should do a running session with locomotives where they're prototypes had been used in movies and TV shows, there are a lot of them; also you should do a reenactment of the Crazy 8s incident since this year is the 20th anniversary of that event, also have you ever done a video of different generations of diesels in the UK, if not you should do a few running sessions with different generations of diesels
Please try to get a roco loco. Would love to see you reviewing one. I have 46 of them and every single one of these are wonderful. I would even send you one for a review if you like. It also would be something new. Keep it up, Grettings from Austria. 😁
It looks good for 85, and for 95 you can buy a thing of loctite threadlock for the crank pins as well, and it would be amazing. I couldn't find a small thing of chemical blackener, though, so you couldn't fix the axels cheap.
Where would had the UK been without its 0-6-0's? When you think that there were thousands of these running over UK metals pulling goods to every part of the railway network. Simple, robust and never shy of hard work. Every company had their own versions and designs but in the end they were excellent Medium goods engines
Now this is a brilliant loco cheap simple and a great prototype I've always loved the Hardy North Eastern locos as I used to live next to an old ner line and remember going for walks up and down the abandoned line. I also went to a lot of the heritage lines round there that was always a mix of old North Eastern and industrial stuff so it's really my cuppa tea. it's a shame about the quality control but it's still amazing once it's in one piece I'll have to buy one when I can. Great video by the way
Thanks Sam, an excellent review for an excellent model. I have the late BR version on pre-order and will be looking at those crank pins. I think it's fair to assume that the Chinese also don't have a tool to fit that size crank pin.
Thanks for the review Sam, I have LNER lined version on order, not yet released. Thanks for the heads up on the crank pins. Nevertheless fantastic value from Oxford Rail, also have the J26 on order, too good to miss at these prices.
That crankpin incident is like me with math, i could solve a advance math problem and pretty much do all the correct steps, but because i accidently made a negative a positive it would be completely wrong, and oxford made a fantastic model and did so many things right but a nostandered crankpin that got loose and it causes the engine to derail. Its always the little things that throws ya off
Can't help but Wonder how you know "What a Sheep sounds like when it's coming." But maybe you grew up on a Farm or in N.Z...!! 😂 But Anyway....! Great Review Sam, very informative as always. Looks like this Oxford 00 is another winner..! I like the way, we get to see your Hope's Soar on opening the Box, then take a Dip when something falls off. And then Rise again..! Every show is a true Roller-coaster of Emotions. But that's what keeps me Hooked. So Thx for your Efforts. Cheers Kim in Oz. 😎 Only Jesting about the Sheep..! Baaahhh..!🐑
I bought one of the last Boche Buster sets recently, about 20 laps in, the coupling rod jammed as well from the rod pin falling out! And my N7 had coupling rod issues too. The Dean and N7 are both still my favourite runners now they've had tweaking. But seems to be a theme with Oxford unfortunately. Still going to buy a J27. Might give it a look over first ;p And yes J26 please!
Excellent review again Sam. Some niggles I must say, even for the price. 86 Pounds / 100 Euros certainly seems possible for this size of loco and relatively simple design. Roco's DB BR 80 039 goes for 84,90 Euro (no tender model). So yeah, it's possible. However, mind that such remains Chinese manufacturing practices of course. Seen it first hand quite often during some my company reviewings over there. Workers just aren't engaged or interested in products they make at all, not even the slightest. They just want to make a living. Hence, always some neglects here and there during assembly. These are fixable but shouldn't occur. Great review though and a well good price for what you get.
Thank you for the review, Sam. It is certainly an excellent loco for the price. Is it possible that some of the poor running from larger locos is down to second radius S bends and some uneven patches of track? I know that many people do not have permanent layouts, or that people do lay track on the floor, but I'm not sure that they would be the same people who purchase a £200 P2 or a Garratt for running in those circumstances. They are targeted at either collectors or those with a more permanent setup. That said, your criticisms about mechanisms and finish on those higher price locos is certainly appropriate given what this J27 can do.
Love this little cute engine….yes a few problems but wow totally forgivable….lovely finish….a real gem this one..at an acceptable price….makes you wonder what they are charging you for on the ‘premium’ engines?? And as usual wonderful video…all the best Sam….cheers
What an amazing loco!! Great review. WHAT!!?? £109 RRP for that!!!??? Wow I'm astonished. Hornby and bachmann need to up their game with £160 RRP locos
A very good model of a workhorse freight engine. The Hornby J15,J36 0-6-0s both have two flywheels so the momentum effect is a lot greater. Your point about the big players ripping off the modeller is very accurate. If every loco produced had a quality flywheel drive, be it steam diesel or overhead or third rail electric then I wouldn't moan, BUT since this is NOT the case then people should complain. One thing I have noticed with Bachmann, their diesel models with flywheel drive, the size of the flywheel has been reduced by at least a half compared with models produced some ten years ago which virtually nullifies the momentum effect.. So the new ones will not be purchased by me plus the much higher prices now being charged are getting to the point where a lot of modellers are probably going to say no to them.
The LNER J-series of locos are the most numerous locos in their fleet. The most powerful of them is the J38 with 6F in the power class although the tractive effort is 28k, 2k less than the SR Q1 (5F).
@@SamsTrains was wandering do u want any building for your model railway I have a couple that a friend save off garden railway that some one was getting rid off chap from local model shop gave em me will happily send em over to u 😀😀😀
Very interesting Sam. I had EXACTLY the same issue with the crank pins and drawbars in my Oxford Rail N7. I was so disappointed because I bought it on the back of your review. I couldn’t get the crank pins to stop falling out so it went back for a refund. Looks like it could be an Oxford issue :(
Wow, this is a pretty good engine. Shame I don't have a place to put it right now though but maybe in the future, who knows? Btw Sam, would you be interested in testing out an American Diesel? I just got one and I don't know too much about the manufacturer but I picked it up for $85 and it's completely brass, if you'd want to. If you like it you're more than welcome to keep it. Anyways this was amazing and I can't wait to see what you review next. Have a great day!
I think I will wait on this one. Looks fine, but I already have a J15 and pre-ordered one of the Caledonian 812 so I can't see needing another 0-6-0 for a while. I do like what Oxford are doing though, I hope they keep it up!
Hi Sam. Good video. It makes you wonder how much it actually costs to produce a good loco. Oxford are making a profit or they would not be in business. The fact that Oxford make good products for the money, it just goes to show how the big manufacturers rip off the public with their overpriced and in a lot of cases low standard products. As always another enjoyable video. Cheers Chris.
I was astonished when the coupling rods jammed, I genuinely thought we’d get a new number 1 loco i think you need to try the J26 but i felt you wanted to give this high mark but you couldn't what a shame.

I have 46 of them and every single one of these are wonderful.
I would even send you one for a review if you like.
It also would be something new.
Keep it up, Grettings from Austria. 😁
This locomotive looks amazing, 0-6-0 tender engines look great! 👍👍
Nice to see a locomotive with a great score! 😃
Thanks mate! And it was excellent to see a loco with a great score! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It looks good for 85, and for 95 you can buy a thing of loctite threadlock for the crank pins as well, and it would be amazing. I couldn't find a small thing of chemical blackener, though, so you couldn't fix the axels cheap.
Nice review Sam, looking forward to my br late crest version! Been a long time coming these
A fantastic review as always Sam. That model was truly stunning. Keep it up!
Thanks so much mate - yeah it is truly stunning isn't it?
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great review definitely tempted to get myself one of these :)
Now this is a grand loco, i need to get one as soon as possible! I love the detail!
It sure is - I can highly recommend it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks for the review Sam, I have LNER lined version on order, not yet released. Thanks for the heads up on the crank pins. Nevertheless fantastic value from Oxford Rail, also have the J26 on order, too good to miss at these prices.
Awesome review Govnah!
Yet another great review sam keep them coming Dave
That crankpin incident is like me with math, i could solve a advance math problem and pretty much do all the correct steps, but because i accidently made a negative a positive it would be completely wrong, and oxford made a fantastic model and did so many things right but a nostandered crankpin that got loose and it causes the engine to derail. Its always the little things that throws ya off
Can't help but Wonder how you know "What a Sheep sounds like when it's coming." But maybe you grew up on a Farm or in N.Z...!! 😂
But Anyway....!
Only Jesting about the Sheep..!
Might give it a look over first ;p
And yes J26 please!
Yes you should review the J26. You should also review a J21 if there is one coming up or in stock
I may actually get their N7, as it is one of my favorite steam locomotives ever, along side the B12 which I currently have
Thank you for the review, Sam.
Great review ,great video , loved the loco ,simple but very nice , and great price .
Hi Sam yes review that earlier locomotive, always fun to watch ⌚😀
Love this little cute engine….yes a few problems but wow totally forgivable….lovely finish….a real gem this one..at an acceptable price….makes you wonder what they are charging you for on the ‘premium’ engines?? And as usual wonderful video…all the best Sam….cheers
What an amazing loco!! Great review. WHAT!!?? £109 RRP for that!!!??? Wow I'm astonished. Hornby and bachmann need to up their game with £160 RRP locos
Managed to get a late crest BR ordered earlier for just over £90 shipped, looking forward to getting it and getting it running
Bloody hell that's great just brought one my self cos of great price can't wait for it to come in post great video Sam 😀😀
Awesome Dan! Hope you really enjoy it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains was wandering do u want any building for your model railway I have a couple that a friend save off garden railway that some one was getting rid off chap from local model shop gave em me will happily send em over to u 😀😀😀
I am currently awaiting the red lined version. I have had it on order for what seems ages.
That's the one I had my eye on initially Gavin - does look amazing!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Very interesting Sam. I had EXACTLY the same issue with the crank pins and drawbars in my Oxford Rail N7. I was so disappointed because I bought it on the back of your review. I couldn’t get the crank pins to stop falling out so it went back for a refund. Looks like it could be an Oxford issue :(
Great review, very informative as always, thanks!
This has to be the first coreless motor with a flywheel... the flywheel truly makes a difference to a coreless motor 👌👌
It sure does actually - very important for a corless motor, as the armatures have such low mass!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Well, my Hornby J15 needs a friend and I have an Oxford N7. Time for a search!
Can't wait for Sam'sTrains from Oxford Rail OR76J27004 Class J27 0-6-0 1214 in L&NER lined black
to come out.
Sam, Rails of Sheffield have the Murphy models class 121 for £129.95 in their bargains page, it’s in the CIE original grey livery
Ooo, I knew something was gonna go wrong, just by the length of the video. Pity, Sam was so happy until the crank pins came loose
Hi Sam, Nice one, All the Best Brian 🤗
Sorry for the late comment but awesome video today Sam beautiful modle and beautiful locomotives
I think I will wait on this one. Looks fine, but I already have a J15 and pre-ordered one of the Caledonian 812 so I can't see needing another 0-6-0 for a while. I do like what Oxford are doing though, I hope they keep it up!
This aged poorly.
Hi Sam.
Great review thanks. Super model at a great price. Shame about the loose crank pins. Oxford Rail have a winner on their hands.
I'd love to see you review a Kato Model. Granted it's ho but would still work on your oo gauge track
I'd love that too - maybe one day! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ooooh, looks great! Also, when will we be seeing some new O gauge content?
Thank you! Soon - got more of that on the way! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
