7:34 I actually get my best ideas when I'm in the bathroom taking a bath or doing my business there.
One time I was there I had so many ideas that I literally ran back to my room and spent the whole day just writing about my characters and key moments. It was amazing. Another way is just simply talking about your idea with someone else and then you'd get an idea you didn't think of before. Having other people with you does help with the writing process.
My only problem is I can talk and think faster than I can write and my hands can't handle it and I end up resting and not being able to finish my idea or what we were just talking about.

3:44 this is entirely dependent on the type of story you’re writing and drawing. Jeff Smith is famous for having the exact same size panels all the way through his stories and only drawing small incremental changes and poses between them. He actually gets a lot of mileage out of this method and it works fantastically for his storytelling because you become hyper aware of these tiny changes which gives the characters much more personality.

This was very relatable and helpful. As someone who has been trying comics as a hobby, it's very hard to do anything good in any sane time. So thanks for sharing!

Thanks for another great video! As a comics writer, I want to learn as much as I can about visual storytelling and I’ve learned to trust my artists’ instincts. It’s not good to be a drill sergeant, and it’s important to remember that comics are collaborative! 😊

Motivation is also such a key factor!! Sometimes you wonder why you can't seem to make progress on the page, when really the panelling just is too bland.
So your tips will definitely help with that, thanks!

Totally yes! It's like you said in one of your prev vids - the more time we spend on the sketch phase the less time is wasted later bc all the important decisions were already made 💪

Completely agree and this changed how I work with mine. At first my thumbnails would be quite vague, just the basic idea, but it made the sketching and lineart phase such a pain trying to guess "again".
For a year I've been doing my thumbnails this way, more detailed, sometimes even where they are detailed enough, like your mean guy's face in that panel, that I go straight to inking and it's the exactly like you said, not only faster, but MORE FUN.
Also loved how the re-doing thumbnails worked so well for me too trying to get the best ideas, that when you made them first I was like "mmh that first panel could be better" and then you went and changed it to something similar to what I had in mind. Proof that it works lol.

Great video. Sometimes I rewdraw panel thumbs a few times as I try to figure out the right composition.

Thumbnailing is something I'm trying to do more and more. Even if it's just messing around with composition ideas. The rough draft process is the unseen work that goes on that nobody ever gets to see.

Damn, the information you tell is beyond helpful. You deserve more attention. Sad youtube is a hustle platform and gathering views on this site feels more like a second job, rather happening natural. Anyway , can you tell me a comic of yours, i want to read some work of yors.

This is a great video! I have been getting into making comics again (I used to when I was like 7 unknowingly made pretty bad zines.) and I always end up redrawing.

this channel is an absolulte god send!! Im having a blast getting my ideas out on paper recently as opposed to just keeping them in my head... its really validating to realise that creating is actually fun after spending so much time thinking about it and feeling stuck

      1. Don't compare yourself to others
      2. Keep your expectations in check
      3. Get enough sleep/good diet/exercise
      4. Try and relax
      5. Enjoy the process and be patient with yourself
      You've got this.

2:54 your first panel should be thinner. There’s no need to have so much space for such a simple establishing shot and single line of dialogue. You could easily squish that down, pull the camera back to get the relevant detail in, and that would open up the space on the right so it wouldn’t be so cluttered.
The flow of the word balloons in the 3rd panel is confusing. The text starts top middle, drops to bottom left, and then moves to bottom right. That’s frustrating and makes the flow of the storytelling less intuitive.
The final panel would be more dramatic if you were inside the car where the dog is barking looking out to the street and the people on the street were framed by the bars inside. Not only is it not a repeat of a previous frame, but it pulls the dramatic tension into the car and frames the people outside in the distance giving the same information while putting a bow on the page.

    Wow!
You have no idea how incredibly helpful to me the ideas in this video are!
I’ve always struggled with the thumbnail phase of sequential storytelling and even briefly flirted with the “just get something down; you can change it later” approach but always ended up getting immensely frustrated before actually putting the idea into practice.
Your video pretty much dispelled every negative thought I had that convinced me “this won’t work” and made me give up before truly getting started.
“Thank you” hardly seems appropriate, considering how much this has opened my eyes and excites me about diving back into comic storytelling.
You’re my MVP of the year! ☺️🫶🏾🙌🏾
