For me, learning proper Character Writing is what has been the boon. World building is good too, but you REALLY need to be able to feel that each of your characters is their own person. They would do things that you WOULDN'T do, so it's important to try and feel out their personality. This is 90% of making better comics, in my opinion. =\
This was incredibly useful, thank you! I often find myself doubting and worrying over how my comic is coming out, especially since I'm now working on the first visual rough draft, but this has helped me think a bit more about what exactly it is I need to do
Oh gods the brushes problem! I never remember. And it's even worse when the comic is in colour and I forget the painting process / how I did what to end up with That One Particular result. It's a mystery. Every batch of pages looks different. I've started jotting down the brush names and putting them in a separate brush folder + I try to not merge layers too fast so I can take a look back and see at least a bit of my previous process.
Yes, yes, yes YES! All of this is good advice! I'd been trying different methods of catching myself before I'd put something terrible to ink. AWESOME stuff, man! This will help a lot of people. =)
There were multiple times where you paused just long enough for me to laugh out lough, which delights me greatly! Between that and the incredibly helpful info, you have earned another sub
As someone who works on a few different projects at a time, I definitely have encountered the situation of forgetting which brushes and such I'm supposed to be using. It's awful, but creating a system to remember that detail would be nice, going forward.
I have 3 comic ideas and they're all in my head because I'm just not motivated enough to write them down 😅. Especially when I'm somewhat still figuring what themes I can attach them too because the short premise for each of them are something I "personally" would like to see.
My first Idea is "The Titans" Where the Teen Titans are grown up and they are all doing their own thing now. But Slade comes back to Jump City with a new team helping him. Robin has to Assemble the Titans. So I don't think this idea is shit by any means but I can see how others maybe. I just have experience writing I've been writing for years so this just came easy lol
I do have plans to sell it very soon. I'm really happy you commented this because I wanted to wait until I had some interest before making it available. I'll make a community post when it's ready but shouldn't be longer than a week or so!
I always bug my other writer friends with comic thumbnails (with the complete lettering, of course). I never send them my draft without a visual narrative.
I’m somewhat the opposite when it comes to Number 4. Like I’ll come up with 3-5 issues comic series. But I’ll get so overwhelmed thinking about 3 issues that each one is about 22 pages long. But when I think of it as a 66 page graphic novel, it isn’t as overwhelming. Plus people are not so impatient when waiting for a graphic novel as they would like for monthly issues.
Oh that's interesting. I find that, with really long comic projects (100+ pages) then it's really difficult to see the finish line and progress doesn't feel as rewarding, I suppose. So it helps me to just think of the next page or two that's in front of me and ignore the size of the mountain ahead of me.
I just realised that although my story ,plot and world building is completely different , the message in my comic is pretty much the same as eren Yeager from attack on titan
Oh wow, on that silhouette image, there were only 3 of them that I didn't recognize: the thing between snoopy and olive oil, the flying baby next to arnold, and the very last one next to pinky and the brain. There were a few others I recognized but can't for the life of me remember the name.
