What an underrated voice and record ! - So pure, so beautiful. My grandmother used to have an old hi-fi record player that had sand in the legs to weight it down. When she played this record, all those acoustic sounds used to resonate down into the wood floors, which was where I was at! Much love ❤
I remember the singing nuns on Ed Sullivan also. I was 9 years old and going to Catholic school in Brooklyn NY. East New York Brooklyn actually. Nuns taught us for 8 years at Loreto on Pacific and Sackman St. Those nuns could be mean as an ornery bull, but they were also very caring too. I get a bit nostalgic and teary eyed when I think of how hard they worked to give us a meanigful and great education! Miss those days for sure!
I remember her performance on the Sullivan show and it is a very beautiful song. Now watching her sing it is tainted by her suicide later in life. She and her partner were having financial difficulties and so she made the decision on 29 March 1985. Her partner also committed suicide with her. I've noticed throughout my life many entertainers and performers that have taken their own lives; it is very sad.

Very beautiful voice. Very sad story. The greed of the record producer and allegedly the convent. It sounds like , after reading about her, she was a beautiful soul.
Although I missed the Singing Nun era, I was front and center for Sister Janet Mead's moment of fame in 1974 and her brilliant recording of "The Lord's Prayer". Sadly, it's hard to imagine how recordings from nuns will ever gain mass attention again.
Same here and I use to love both the Singing Nun and Sister Janet Mead's The Lord's Prayer. We sung that in chapel in high school and our nuns even the old ones really got into singing it. My music teacher taught us Dominique and when we mastered it (even though most of us were only starting to learn french) when 2 of the other sisters came into class it was just heavenly. And then we sung Sister Janet Mead's The Lord's Prayer. And I then wanted to become a nun. Of course I never did... It is hard to imagine if nuns did record music again what it would be like. But there was that Italian Sister that was on one of the talent shows and she was awesome...
@@cledwynstafford4819 - Maybe. But what does that have to with the statement, "it's hard to imagine how recordings from nuns will ever gain mass attention again"?

My family and I saw this show and shortly after my father bought their album. He spoke fluent French from his mother parents. I don't know what ever happened to the album. I used to play it on occasion.
And this poor sister was thrown out of the convent and she led a a very difficult life after that this. Look up her story. Truly tragic and sad indeed.
How many times did she appear on The Ed Sullivan Show? Twice? (Did Mr. Sullivan travel to go record her in a foreign country, for later broadcast on his regular show?) Did the "Singing Nun" and her accompany'ists ever specifically travel to New York, in order to be on his show in the more usual way? (That is to say, before a live audience.)
Lindo, muito linda esta canção, uma combinação de vozes perfeita, foram muito desonestos com a madres, elas estarão bem financeiramente e se teria evitado o fim triste da madre
I remember finding the Singing Nun record at a thrift store. What a joy, I had no idea about her killing herself. That saddens me. I guess she just wanted to get to heaven a bit quicker. If only she knew how much she touched and helped people with her art. I guess life is a tragedy. Oh well.
I am captivated!! I can't believe how beautiful they sing and the fullness and delicacy of her/their voices!! I may have listed 4 times in a row, just laying here soaking it in. 😎
Yes you did. In the movie with Debbie Reynolds she called the guitar sister Adele but I don't know if that was true in real life. They took a lot of liberties with the movie.
I was just flicking on tv and saw the old movie The Singing Nun from the 60's, and i thought to myself, yeah right, i bet the real nun wasn't good looking like the actress portraying her, so i looked her up here, suspicion confirmed.. LOL!
For what it's worth, she denied being lesbian: "People at my record company think that two women who live together must be lesbians. They assert even that nuns in convents are in love. I deny these rumors as I testify against every creepy spirit. The answer is still obvious that I am not homosexual. I am loyal and faithful to Annie, but that is a whole other love in the Lord. Anyone who cannot understand this can go to the devil!"
It is so sad how this woman allowed herself tricked by the devil and ended her life in such a horrible way. Probably all the nuns in that monastery who encouraged her with her artistic performance will face a harsh judgement by the Lord.
What a total waste of a life and soul that this women commits suicide due to her singing of what is essentially a simple folk song. Nice voice but really, her recording was a novelty and it appears her pride led her to agree to it that ultimately led to her sin of suicide.
I went to a Catholic girls high school and the nuns there use to sing her songs to us in music class and we all learned both this one and Dominique. That was in 1973 when I was 12 yrs old. I have loved this and Dominique for all my life and I never knew what happened to her ( I will have to search her) I failed french but can still sing these songs and they bring a smile to my soul. I also remember singing Sister Janet Mead's The Lords Prayer.... RIP
Got to love Sullivan...from four nuns to four Beatles in 30 days.
Wow, 58 years ago, I was sitting in front of the family RCA Victor black and white TV watching this very same show.
Now that was good fortune.
J'ai vu ça aussi ! J'ai été surpris d'avoir compris l'apprentissage du français ! I saw this too! I was surprise I understood learning French!
Tears come to my eyes just listening to it

Wasn’t she married?
@@NeighborofKT no she never married. It took her decades to come to terms with being a lesbian. Her story is incredibly tragic.
I just read her story on Wikipedia. Such a tragedy. Thanks for the tip... I had no idea.
