My mother was bedridden with terminal bone cancer. Her favorite show was Tom Jones. We would sit together in her bedroom and watch him sing. After she had passed away, I found myself picking up the phone to call her whenever his show came on. I still love and miss you, Mom, and Thank You, Sir Tom, for giving my mom so much enjoyment her last year of life. 💕

I’m so sorry to hear about your momma , I haven’t experienced the death of a mother, but losing siblings is hard as well. I too lost my brother to bone cancer,he was only 31. I took care of him, and that’s the best thing we can do ,is to just love them. I just lost my sister to CC last October as well. Music 🎼 is soothing to our souls . Tom seems like such a cool person. I’ve seen him on the voice.
I’m glad you have those memories. She’s in a better place. 🙂❤️🇨🇦.

We children had to be bathed and ready for bed before Tom's show came on so my mom could "concentrate " on the show. LOL She loved his voice so much. This brings good memories of my mom too.

Ahhhh,Thank you for sharing that Kimberly . Lol my grandparents were like that as well. Early to bed ,early to rise she’d say! Very strict, and God was # 1 . No TV ,books, and tons of fishing. My dad was an Architect in Toronto, and would come home North to build again. I used to sit on both of their shoulders as he held nails in his teeth lol. They sure don’t make things like they used to .Things back in their day were so simple and so honest. We worked together, but we worked hard . I still make everything from scratch, including bread when I do eat it, and grow my own vegetables. I miss those days with my grandparents, including their way of life . Despite their being strict,I’ve never seen them angry . We would never even think about being disrespectful. It was just how I was raised. I’m so happy this reminded you of your momma, which in turn reminded me , of my grandparents , who I called mom and dad, /grandparents. Growing up without TV, there’s always room for mom and dad/ grandparents memories. Fil always puts a smile on our faces.
I’m always learning about so many Artists on this channel, that I’d never know about. 😊

Moreover, 53 years later, 82 years young Tom Jones is one of the very few male singers who can still "cut it" as a singer. Many of a slightly younger generation of his peers can't and I'm thinking of such as Rod Stewart and even Paul McCartney can't. True, they're both great showmen; McCartney is a great multi-instrumentalist but, they are not as good a singer as they were in their younger days.

Thanks for showcasing this legend. Tom Jones is a Welsh singer who has one of the smoothest powerful voices around. And he was a showman too, in fact he was a big heart-throb with the ladies. He has so many hits such as "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Delilah", "It's Not Unusual", "What's New Pussycat?", "Green, Green Grass of Home", "She's a Lady". He covers a lot of genres. He is still performing & is a coach on "The Voice" UK version. He also had a variety show from 69 - 71 & had some of the biggest music stars at the time.

I was 21 years old, it was 1969. We were visiting family in Los Angeles for a week. Tom Jones was appearing at the Greek theater in Los Angeles. That show was sold out, but my wonderful uncle found myself and my sisters three tickets!
It’s really difficult to explain how excited we were… And that concert for 2 1/2 hours at the Greek theater was absolutely amazing it is embedded in my heart and my soul.
Of course every song was a standing ovation. It was my first ever concert, and it was Tom Jones. The memory of that show is so vivid, we, my sisters and I Never forgot and talked about it all the time.

I always found Tom Jones vocals to be a cut above everything else that was on the radio at the time. Not only did he have a beautiful voice but the power behind it was exhilarating and his mastery of his vocals as an instrument gave his songs so much more depth, more entertainment value. It wasn't just the words. His cousins and family were being interviewed once and was asked if musical talent ran in the family. One of his cousins answered that they all saying all the time. The Tom was just the only who would jump up on the coffee table and dance while singing. He was always a showman

I can't believe after more than 50 years Tom Jones can still "belt out" songs with that incredible voice of his. He is so fortunate, because Frank Sinatra, couldn't sing like he did when he was younger. I know because I went back in the late 70s with my husband to see him and boy was, he disappointed not to mention he was rude to the audience asking for songs to sing. Personally, I wished I hadn't seen him at all. The one that I appreciate and loved to see was Luther Van Voss, who was a gentleman, kind and beautiful voice but generous with his back up singers to sing too as part of his act. He was amazing and still to this day despite his passing I just loved him.

I’ve always loved Tom Jones‘ voice since I was a teenager in the 1960s. Since it was Beatlemania time I seem to remember that Tom already had the lounge lizard appeal and I was often afraid to tell people that I liked his voice. But here I am still loving him and the one thing I always felt that was so prevalent in his voice was tons and tons of emotion. Plus, Fil, as you are saying, the power and the blues like quality of so much of his music.

Tom is One of a Kind! I've always been a huge fan of his. Took my wife to see him at Lake Tahoe in the 90's...first seat, center stage! She was right in front of Tom, inches-away. At an appropriate break, she arose and offered him her white lace panties, which he accepted...used them mop the perspiration from his face, and then placed them in his suits' breath pocket! I don't know who was 'smiling bigger'; my wife, Tom or me!
What a great show, by The Master himself. The Voice, The Performance & The Charisma...
My wife was then in her early 30's, drop-dead gorgeous, and became His Fan for Life! The next day she was recognized on the street as; "You're That Girl with the panties from the Tom Jones show!"
Memories of even a small moment in time, can be indelible & irreplaceable.
Thank you Tom, and thank you Fil...

No doubt about it Tom Jones is a great singer and always was. I’m now 70 and I remember when he arrived on the scene in North America and his voice has never dimmed. Just a great performer and a great artist with his voice. One thing that I found really hilarious at the end of the song, however was how closely it seems to align with the characterization a pop singer named Birdie in the film version of the play “Bye-Bye Birdie”. As I have returned that film over the years, I have always felt that “Birdie’s” singing style was obviously over the top, but in re-watching this clip from what I imagine was “The Tom Jones Show” I can see that perhaps it really was part of our 60s pop culture and not all that far over the top in parody of it. Lastly, I remember that my mother, passed away now used to always remark while watching Tom Jones that he could “put his shoes under her bed anytime “I suspect there are a lot of women who would still be happy if he was to do that.

      Nah!
My dad and mom were married just a few days after they met. They were utterly devoted to each other always.
Both of them happened to look like movie stars, and they were very comfortable gently joking around.
A few years ago their 3-year-old grandson piled up every toy he could find and was schlepping it all to join my dad over on the couch.
He got as far as the tv and suddenly stopped cold. My mom spotted this from the kitchen and asked what happened to him.
My dad said "Nothing, he's fine, he knows what he's doing."
"Well something happened, he just froze there."
"Leave the kid alone, he's watching Marilyn Monroe."
      "Oh. Who wouldn't!"
      😊

That lead guitarist is Big Jim Sullivan. But it’s the driving drum and bass beat that are spurring Tom on and then, of course, the horns. This song was a country song in its inception, written and sung by Don Gibson. Ray Charles gave it an R&B makeover and Tom takes that and adds his smoking hot vocals, very similarly to what he did with ‘Danny Boy.’ Tom hits a Bb on the original ending of ‘Thunderball’ so the opening note is well within his range on this song. Although the ‘cold open’ makes it much more difficult.

Tom is my favourite singer his voice is unique and I think he got better, if that’s possible, with age! But, I think Ray Charles owns this song and he’s another favourite of mine. Both these gentleman have exceptional God given talent and it’s hard to compare the two.

My Mom loves Tom Jones. She could listen to him for hours. Well , I only like not love; probably because I didn't grow up in the sixties or seventies .
But I started listening to Janis joplin after I heard her singing in a duet with Tom Jones "Raise Your Hand" .

I hope Tom sees this. What a great job you did, Fil (as you always do)! Loved how you noticed the subtle leads in place by the orchestra and related Tom's vocal prowess to how a guitarist can put similar interest into how to let their guitar be as expressive as a great singer. Well done.
And a shout out to Sir Tom and the blessing he's made of his God-given gift, from early in his career and right through to present day. The ways he uses that dynamic powerhouse of a voice with such finesse and passion and soul keeps him as my favorite singer of all time.
Just as I saw how you couldn't help but beam at what Tom was doing with the song, my heart beams whenever I hear him sing. He's always struck the right chord with me. So, thank you for doing this reaction, Fil, and thanks to your subscriber for suggesting this performance by Tom Jones! I'd love to hear your take on something from his later work, too.

Love it. Also, I adore blues music… so I really enjoyed the bits that you played in this one Fil.
Ray’s version of this song, I feel has more of a country music feel.
I really like this by Tom.

"Modern Sounds in Country Music" was masterful by Ray Charles as his "genius" again shined. Sir Tom Jones is in my top 5 vocalists and could belt out a song like very few singers. Jackie Wilson #1 and Elvis #2 are at the top of my personal list of vocalists from that era. Fil, you enjoy Tom's blues singing, check out Lulu singing blues. She's far more than her "To Sir with Love" pop hit.

Actually, as one who watched his show back in the day, this is the second song of the set. The first one is fast and the second slow and the third fast. On another note (pun intended), see if you can get My Funny Valentine from his show. He sits in a bar (set) and barely moves a muscle but still belts out the tune, yet somewhat quietly. And for fun watch some of the coach videos from UK The Voice, where they're waiting for someone to come out and he just sings from his seat. Also the one with the son of Lonnie Donegan, who sang Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It's Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight but wrote Tom's hit I'll Never Fall In Love Again. You don't have to analyse these, just enjoy them (in your copious free time (LOL). .

Fil, Just wow! I was 10 then, but always thought he had one of the best voices.! But as a singer once said, 'and every one of energy, in everything you play, as the sweat pours off your body, and you give it all away" . He embodied that. I will always feel there are songs that, like this one, showed him much better than some he was more known for. His talent was for this type of music, but as always, competition was fierce. Thankyou for showcasing him. He is often ignored. 👍🌊💙💙💙🌊🥰✌

He is one of the few performers who has been able to reinvent himself and stay alife during all these years: amazing. He has soul, powerful voice and technique. His voice is sooo distinct, I wonder why/how: Would you say it is because it sounds as if he had a filter before his voice? Thank you for the demonstration.
