  • I've enhanced the 1980 Week 6 Bengals at Steelers game. This game is pretty dull to look at, even after enhancement. The lighting that day with it being overcast and all just didn't lend itself to good color. The main highlight of this enhancement is the clean-up of the crud in the picture and the sharpening. You can see the before/after shots here -- imgbox.com/g/H... -- my thanks to romelovesdan for providing the DVD files used for this project.

    The Bengals swept the Steelers in 1980, winning earlier in Cincinnati 30-28. The Steelers slip was showing as they missed the playoffs in 1980 for the first time since 1971. A more impressive win over the Steelers came for the Bengals the year before when on October 14th 1979 the 0-6 Bengals defeated the 5-1 Steelers in Cincinnati 34-10. What was unique about that? It marked the only time from 1972 to 1979 that Pittsburgh lost to a team with a lesser record.

    • @kissherlips1
      @kissherlips1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I always thought the 79 Steelers were the weakest of their 4 SB title teams. Beat the Oilers in the playoffs but the Oilers were seriously beat up and crippled and if Nolan Cromwell doesn't drop a 4th Q INT that almost certainly would have been returned for a TD, maybe the Rams actually win the SB.

    • @bajikimran2304
      @bajikimran2304 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kissherlips1 The Steelers actually caught a bigger break a few weeks before. In week 12 the Steelers went to San Diego and were destroyed by the Chargers 35-7. at 14-2, the Chargers were the #1 seed in the AFC and seemed destined to go to the Super Bowl. The Chargers were upset at home in the first round of the playoffs by Houston 17-14. Vernon Perry of the Oilers intercepted four Dan Fouts passes and J. C. Wilson added another for good measure as Fouts went nuclear, costing the Chargers a shot at the Super Bowl and opening the door for Pittsburgh.

      @@kissherlips1 I think the Steelers '74 SB team was their weakest. Sports Illustrated before the start of the 1974 playoffs stated that the Steelers were the only playoff team without a quarterback. The QB position was very suspect for the Steelers that year.

I'm a lifelong Bengal fan but I'm kind of in the Pittsburgh market. I basically live the same distance to Pittsburgh as I do Cincinnati. So I recognized Nover's voice immediately.

    The Steelers finished 9-7 in 1980, but three losses (Cinn and Cleveland) were by a combined total of 4 points. In all three games, missed FGs and extra points cost them the game. So a better kicking game and they could have finished 12-4, the same record they had in winning the SB in 1979. Also in 1980, 12-4 would have won the Central Division. Just shows how it's a game of inches sometimes.

  • @larrymelman
    @larrymelman 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    These Steelers finished 9-7, missing the playoffs for the first time since 72. Bahr and Colquitt were tremendous upgrades from Gerela and Walden who bumbled through the 70's, but ironically it was a missed (blocked) extra point in this game, plus a missed FG at the end (although it looked to be a bad hold) and another missed XP two weeks later against Cleveland, that arguably cost them a playoff berth in 1980.

  • @dantheman5745

    As I watched, I thought Sam Nover's play-by-play call was really good, but found his repartee with color commentator Bob Trumpy to be, at times, awkward. I knew Trumpy was a former Bengals TE, but knew nothing of Nover. Turns out he was a mainstay in Pittsburgh sports for ~30 years, being the voice of the short-lived Pittsburgh Maulers (USFL) as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins. I think that explains the occasional odd-sounding exchanges. Trying, maybe a little too hard, to have friendly banter. All in all, I think both guys kept their rooting interests farily well in check. Sad to see that Sam passed away in 2018 at the age of 77.

    1) 1980 Steelers - almost all the names were the same but everyone was more worn and tired. Most of them played more than a season's worth of post season games and it showed. Hard games, at a time when there were some gimmies during the regular season
    2) Bradshaw treating Smith like Swann and throwing into double coverage, almost getting picked. People saw Swann not HOF-worthy, but I think he is the guy that tuned Bradshaw into a passer more than anyone.
    3) James Garner was the man. Great commercials, unlike today's garbage.
    4) Hard watching Webster.
    5) The year before the Bengals got it together. Ken Anderson should be HOF. Arguably the best reg season QB from 73 to 83. I feel he was too calm and cool, lacking the fire fans demand out of QBs. Just enjoyable watching his throws. Pretty durable too, considering Pitt pounded him twice a year.
    6) I didn't appreciate 80s football back then. Bought into the No Fun League idea, as defenses adjusted and regained an edge after Mel Blount-like rules had put then in check.
    7) Great intro music. Sticks in your head. Also, last season of cool disco-y music when going to commercials.
    8) I don't understand what T Bell is doing on the last punt.
    9) Stout lost it. Laces were not out.

    Remarkable the bargain prices to be had with home entertainment electronics nowadays, such as with HDTVs.
