Robert Mieczkowski tips for fishing in hilo -1 do not use giant hooks!!! The fish here are smart!!! -2 fishing line. I recommend line no larger then 24# Mano. Braided line you could use 50# because the diameter is smaller. This could work. -3 BAIT- typical bait I use is white bread, or squid “the tenticals”. These work well. Do not over bait your hook tho, like I said they are smart. When using bread as bait, try to use a pinch no bigger then a quarter, covering the hook. And last but not least. 4- LOCATION- typically Hilo’s fishing isn’t that great only if you know where to go. Most public places are over fished. But you still could have a chance if you go at the right times. Get yourself a tube chart app for your phone. This helps me all the time. Rising tides is the best. And immediately when the tide starts going down. Places You can try fishing is at coconut island, the breakwall is nice too, or even down Keukaha at any beach shoreline down there. im moving to oahu with my son who is an army medic. will be doing alot of fishing and camping. maybe if you are on oahu i can meet up with you and your family and have a catch and cook. you can show me how hawaiins do it. im an oldish woman who is disabled and wish to fish ALOT when i get to oahu. but i wont keep it if i wont eat it. i can show you how we cook fish texas style.
