The band (and our cameraman) worked hard today and did a fine job. Also - It was great to see a band that is again using two euphoniums.

Another fab video from Military Bands Everywhere! Thank you for capturing this and enabling viewers from afar to enjoy. It’s a pleasant change to see a band marching somewhere other than Windsor or to and from Buckingham Palace and I’m struck at the lack of crowds! It must have been a pleasant change to be able to record without battling the hordes! The band are in fine form, sounding superb and most impressed with the way they seamlessly go from 3s to 5s and back as the width of the road dictates. And, of course, SDM Chambers giving his best, as ever. Thanks again👍

Hello Merv! The Drum Major in this Video is Senior Drum Major (SDM) Gareth Chambers MVO. He is the Most Senior of all the Drum Majors in the Household Division & is Very Popular indeed with many of the Regulars in this Channel & other Channels who cover most of the Changing the Guard Parades in London & Windsor. The Windsor Guard Change takes place in Windsor Castle & Footage shows 1 of the 5 Guards Regiment's Bands Supporting a Detachment of Guardsmen mounting Guard Duty at the Castle. They lead the New Guard from Victoria Barracks & March to Windsor Castle, then once the Old Guard have been relieved, escort them back to the Barracks.
In London, it's more Complex & there are 2 Bands, 1 Escorting the New Guard to Buckingham Palace & Escorting the Old Guard once relieved, back to Wellington Barracks. Meanwhile a 2nd Band has Marched up to St James Palace & Collected the Old Guard there & Escorted them down the Mall to Buckingham Palace, where they form up with the BP Old Guard & march Back to WB with the Returning Band. The 2nd Band Escorts the New Guard up to SJP & then March back to Barracks on their own.
The SDM often leads 1 of the Bands himself in the Changing of the Guards Parades & is especially Popular with the viewing Public. As you say, he is very much the Professional & carries out his Duty with Great Elegance & Style.
This Particular Channel is Pretty Unique, with Military Bands Everywhere (MBE) travelling all over Continental Europe to Capture many other European Military Bands carrying out similar Duties to this, giving you the Chance to Compare & Contrast those Performances to the British ones. MBE also takes you to other Military Parades in Continental Europe that are Traditional to each Country in Europe. It's all very interesting & some things are even Fascinating, they're always very Good Videos Regardless.

@@vickyRoyalHistory . Hello Vicky, Thank you for the comprehensive explanation. My interest in marching bands began in the 60s with the Air Training Corps (ATC), now the Air Cadets. I progressed to over 20 years in marching Scottish Pipe Bands and I was a regular visitor to the annual Earls Court Military Tattoo throughout the 70s until it ended, Bands have formed a big part of my life and I am still there in spirit if not in person.. Thanks to You Tube, I can watch many of the events you describe.

@@mervwhitney7229 Hello Merv!! You're most Welcome & it's good to have you aboard! Many of the Regulars in this Channel & 1 or 2 others we haunt are either Retired or Active in many Bands themselves & we even have some Serving Musicians & Drum Majors from these Bands popping in & out. The 1 thing we all share is a Love & Appreciation of Military Music & the Different Bands we get to see, including the Bands from the Royal Regiments of Scotland. Just before Christmas Last year we had the RAF Central Band & The Kings Colour Squadron Mounting the Gard at Windsor & the Following Week at Buckingham Palace. They were a Brilliant Band Led by an Exceptionally Good DM, Flight Sergeant Jeanette Scott.

And so ends the first Freedom of Parade I've seen from Cosmopolitan London and what a Great Parade it was too. A lot of Favourite Marches from the Changing of the Guards Videos & 1 new March for me, "The Lass of Richmond Hill", which was very Nice & to me anyway, Conjured up images of Georgian London or the theme from a TV Period Drama Series. I'm not sure if it's just me, but the Band & Detachment of Middlesex Yeomanry and Princess Louise's Kensington, seemed to be Marching quicker than the Guardsmen I'm used to watching. It's always a pleasure to watch SDM Gareth Chambers MVO Leading a Band. His Style as a Drum Major seems to me to be almost an extension of the Terrific Job these Bands do, he flows in perfect time to the Music, he never seems to be a Separate Element & never draws your attention away from the Musicians. His Signals Start & Finish to the Bars of Music & his Flourishes flow with the Music. Yet when you see him striding along at the Head of the Band, he's Supremely Confident & Master of all he Sees. To coin a Cricket phrase, he's the 12th Man of the Team.
Have to say, the Band of the Coldstream Guards did an excellent Job of Musical Support. When like me, most of the Videos you see are of the Guard Changes in London & Windsor, it's a real treat to see a Parade like this when you see much more of the Bands for a longer period. I know there are a lot of People who Bemoan the Fact that the Household Division Infantry Regiment Bands have a List of Marches they Select from that seems Limited & you hear many of the Marches repeated regularly, but there is an advantage to that in a way. When they play a Selection of what I call, "Old Favourites", they are Familiar, so you aren't having to Concentrate on the Music, you can relax & have the opportunity to watch the very talented Musicians at work. It's interesting what else you notice too, for the first time for a long while, I see 2 Euphoniums, 1 on loan from the Grenadier Guards & it's quite noticeable in the Counter Melody they play, especially in "Scarlett & Gold". Anyone who's used to my Comments will know my Favourite Instrument is the Bass Trombone (although I really like all the Trombones) I'm sure there's 1 Bass Trombone, but the Euphoniums muddied the waters somewhat for my ears & I spent quite a bit of time inspecting the Trombones, wondering if there was a 2nd Bass. I couldn't see a second one but I did see something I've never seen before, hopefully someone will tell me if it's something that happens Frequently. "Colchester Castle" is one of my particular Favourites, When it started at 10:55, the Trombones were 5 abreast in the Front Rank, at about 12:50 they had changed the Configuration & had 3 Trombones in the front rank & had made a 'New' Rank of 2 Trombones including the Bass. It makes Sense as the Road Space had narrowed & the other Ranks had altered to 2 or 3 as well, I just find it Strange they did it in the Middle of a March. This is another benefit of not having to concentrate on the Music, you notice all these things you would otherwise be oblivious to. It has raised a question or two as well. I was told a long time ago that the Bands were classed as Ceremonial Duty & that Bands people don't go with their Regiments when they're Posted to Active Duty. However, I recently discovered that Bandsmen actually become Medical Orderlies & some even make up a Machine Gun Unit. I'm a bit confused about this & while I was watching this Video, noticed there are some Very Vertically Challenged Musicians. The thought came to me, How are those people going to manage to Stretcher Bear some of the other Bandsmen coming in at 6'3" tall, or others who look to be weighing in at 17 or 18 stone. Perhaps 1 of you could set me straight as to whether Bandsmen deploy with their Regiment on Active Duty or not & if they do, particularly now that Women can Serve in Front-line Active Service, what would be their Job. I am neither for or against Women serving as front line Troops, but the limitations of Slightly Built, Vertically Challenged Troops of either Sex I would have thought been patently obvious, which was why there used to be a Height Restriction.
Thanks for bringing us this Parade, in your normal Brilliant Video Style MBE. I really appreciate these Parades, that we would never usually see, they show us another Face of these Bands. The Irish Guards Band at the Goodwood Revival is still my Favourite & will take a lot of beating, but as I said, these Parades show a different Face to the Guard's Band we normally see & that breeds a whole lot more Respect from us viewers who aren't Marching Band Musicians. The Quality of the Audio & Visual of this Video is, as usual, up to your High Standard & very Enjoyable. Thank you for bringing it to us MBE!

Hi Vicky, nice to see you again, we haven't had an SDM fix for a while! Nobody but NOBODY can wax lyrical about him as well as you, I can just nod in agreement and admiration for your words😊 If there's ever a vote for cheerleader you can rest assured you have mine, I'll just bounce along most enthusiastically behind you (alongside Charlotte and a good many others!)
Yes, it was great to see this band in a different location to the norm, I really enjoyed it. As a mere beginner in terms of viewing and following I find your descriptions enlightening on several aspects, there is much for me to learn (though at this point in my life my brain is already quite full😏) I'm slowly getting to grips with the instruments (I do know quite a few but it's quite easy to muddle some of them when you're not actually a part of the scene as it were) And when it comes to 'name that tune' Delvin is the man!
You mention the band members becoming Medical Orderlies? I came across some info on this. I quote, 'Members of the regimental band are full-time musicians who, in the past, used to be trained for duty as medical assistants in wartime. Since the introduction of Clinical Governance regulations within the NHS, however, military musicians are deployed in a General Duties role'
It goes on to say ' Pipers and Drummers have always been full-time soldiers who take their musical responsibilities on a part-time basis.' I believe they are machine gunners for the battalion. (& hence SDM Chambers has served as a different type of pointy end of a unit!)
But, I'm a mere novice, so I am happy to accept correction from anyone who is more in the know.
So much to know and learn!
      Hwyl Vicky😊

@@AnnofWales21 Hi again Ann! Your Finger Tips must be Burning (As opposed to your Ears Burning) I've just posted you one of my Waffles, on your Comment about how Marches are Selected by the DOM & How to tell a DOM from a BM.
Thank you for your Super Kind Words about my Descriptions, especially re SDM Gareth Chambers MVO. He's very easy to Wax Lyrical About. In my Opinion & to My taste, He's Simply the Best I have ever Seen. He's on Par with Johan Sebastian Strauss & Waltzes, Capability Brown & Landscaping, Jim Reeves & Country Music, Glen Miller & Swing, Elvis Presley & 40s & 50s American Rock & Roll, The Beatles & 60s Pop Rock etc etc. All these People didn't just want to be Good, they were going to be the Best. You get the Picture, I know you do, because you are a very Clever Lady. I mention the Traditional Role of Medic Orderly in the post I just made, it seems their Roles have become more Specialised. The Corps of Drums Musicians are actually Machine Gun Units if & when they're Deployed on Active Service, but both They & the Guards Bands Musicians will only ever be called into Action in Certain Dire Circumstances, Reserves for the Reservists if you like. Delvin-Pedia is most definitely the Man for Name that Tune, but he has a Huge amount of Knowledge in an absolute Plethora of things in the British Armed Services, certainly in the Household Division, Infantry Bands, Cavalry Band Mounted & Dismounted, they're both the Same Band, which is Mind Boggling on its own. Riding a Horse playing Military Music & Learning to March Military Style in different Tempos while Playing an Instrument 2hrs later is more than my poor Mind can Cope with. The Fact that that's what they do & in my Opinion they're just as Good as the RM Bands, who are generally accepted as the Premier Band of the British Armed Services, I'm amazed they haven't all wound up with Split Personalities! Delvin-Pedia didn't earn the "Pedia" Title from just being a Walking Jukebox of Military Marches, it's the huge amount of Knowledge he has of everything British Army from Bootlaces to Tank Tracks, British Army Music to Artillery Shells, Uniforms to Antique Firearms. That's not even Starting on Air Force Aircraft of all Ages & Types & then there's Why his Favourite March is Trafalgar, he could give you a reasonably good description of Royal Naval Ships of all Sizes. You could do far worse than ask him for Information & be certain if he doesn't know the Answer, he'll say so & direct you to somewhere else who'll probably know. The vast Majority of what I know has come from his happiness to Share his Knowledge.
The Descriptions I do & your appreciation of them (Thank You) is probably helped by the Fact I Tutor Part Time at University. I'm in the Process of Writing a Thesis for a History PhD. I already have a Social Science PhD in Social Anthropology & Sociology & obviously a Masters Degree in History. So I suppose all that means I can write Descriptions & Explanations OK or at least in a way that 1st, 2nd & 3rd Year University Students can Understand until they Get to the more Purely Academic Writings of Post Grad Work. But then I love History, so it's just as enjoyable for me to be part of the Help & Support Network for them.
      Erk! Yet another Waffle, Sorry
