@@PhillipBridgesReviews Mine has leak rn from both freezer and fridge. a drawing is soaked and i saw its coming from the Water fountain for water and ice.
Took about 20 minutes to melt the ice covering the drain but got to the drain, a couple tries with pouring the hot water and bingo ice cleared from drain. THANK YOU THANK YOU, Phillip Bridges
This is my second time around about a year later and it was really filled with ice (so it looks like I have to do this about 2x year to keep the ice from building up too much). Anyway, this time, after melting the ice with a hair dryer, when I put about a cup of hot water down the drain, it cleared but it may have overflowed the drain pan since there's now a pool of water on the garage floor (the floor is not the issue). My question is, if I accidentally poured too much water down the drain and the drain pan got that full that it overflowed, will the condensor eventually evaporate it because if the drain pan is accessed from the back, there no way I can get to the back of our 2008 upright frigidaire freezer. Thanks for you help.@@PhillipBridgesReviews
If your defrost heater is working properly, get a bare copper wire clipped onto defrost heater bent down in the drain - metal to metal contact needed. There will be something to stop hot air from getting in the compartment from the drain - do not touch it with the wire, clip it just short of this item. If the air prevention item is a rubber cap with a slit in it, clean it with Goo Gone so it is not sticky and sticking closed. Or get a better drain kit from the manufacturer that has a P-trap in it. Good luck!
Thank you very much for your honest way of teaching how to fix freezer water leak. You also provided information if someone wants to fix water leakage differently.
I have a Frigidaire freezer which looks exactly like this one and I had the same problem. Found water leaking from somewhere and found the whole back area was frozen over. I used a hair dryer as well with towels to melt the ice and remove water. Word of caution: that split in the sheet metal is razor sharp and I am bleeding as I write this. Be careful when putting fingers around or past that split to feel in the drain hole. I actually had to disconnect the plastic drain tube from underneath, and then push a pipe cleaner brush up from under to clear the last piece of ice out of the hole to clear it. Still not sure what clogged it - no food particles found but it is clear now. Thank you for making this video.
Many frost free freezers have the problem of the drain freezing up, especially in areas of high humidity where the evaporator could frost up easily. A permanent fix is to attach a heater probe that attaches to the defrost element and probes down the drain. It heats up and keeps the water from freezing in the drain.
Thank you for making this task straightforward. Didn't even know about this maintenance until water was on the floor a few days ago under my 1990's trouper of a fridge. After calling some appliance repair companies I learned that no one could repair it since it's missing the model or serial number. Your video helped me know I could do this myself. Success! Really appreciate your clear steps and including letting us know how much time it took you.
ours kept leaking too. today I took the door off and racks and turned it off and put a header inside of it and it froze all the ice and unclogged the drain hole. took about 2-3 hrs cuz I wanted to make sure all the water drained down the hole completely
Why are the modern refrigerators/freezers having these problems? I never had this issue until I bought a new fridge around 2010. It leaked. I've owned two mini fridge/freezer units, and they both leaked. What's the deal?
Dixie Odie* They just don’t make things as good as they used to 😕. But I also suspect that this leaking problem may be more common in the freezers made with an automatic defrost system. Seems like they just traded one inconvenience for another one.🙄 Or worse… it created a big expense for some people who may have given up and just replaced their freezer 🙁💸
@@laurice8056 Agreed. And there's the expense resulting from the damage that can occur with leakage and the price for a repairman (if you can find one), both of which I can speak to personally.
We have a very old fridge, probably from the 90's and that think keeps running perfectly. Currently a fairly new Samsung fridge and it's been leaking for quite awhile, now our 2 year old fridge is leaking. New fridges aren't like the old ones. Everything was made so well back in the day!
@Phillip Bridges - thanks for this video... you fixed the water spilling onto the floor. But, what's needed to prevent the freezing of water? I've had my unit for a looong time and now this leaking has started. ::sigh:: Because of this thorough video I'll begin working on my Maytag MTB1956GEB top freezer tomorrow. ; )) Thanks!!
Usually it’s little food particles or a piece of ice that doesn’t defrost all the way and get clogged in the drain line when the freezer goes through a defrost cycle. It’s seems to be kind of like a roll of the dice. I have had it happen twice in the seven years I have had my freezer. I try to wipe down and clean out my freezer about twice a year. Usually, when the time change happens. So it doesn’t happen. *side note* when I do clean it out, I pour a cup of hot water down the drain just to free up anything. The times it has clogged I neglected to do this. This seems to work for me. Hopefully it helps you out. Thanks for watching 😃
@@PhillipBridgesReviews I did the same repair today. There is a replacement drain tube kit put out by the manufacturer which is better than the original to keep it from clogging up. Hopefully, mine won't be clogging up and having to take the freezer apart to thaw it out again.
Look up (Freezer Heat Probe) it clips directly onto the heating element and keeps the drain hole just warm enough to keep it open. I just used a thick copper wire and haven't had any problems since.
@@PhillipBridgesReviews I’ll give that a shot, I just scraped all the ice out and didn’t see anything, I’ll have to give it another go tomorrow. So far I don’t see anymore water dripping, and it was pretty steady before I removed the ice 🤷🏻♀️
Yes. I would say once you start seeing water on the floor. I actually just did mine again 2 weeks ago. That was the first time it happened since I made the video.
I would imagine my wine fridge operates the same with water existing the fridge into a water tray inside ….in my case it’s seems like a good amount of water near the top of the tray …maybe it’s overflowing from tray therefore is it not evaporating quickly enough?
Followed the video and it seemed to work fine. However, the next morning the control panel temperature was -15 f. It had always run at 0 f. As I was moving the temp up, when I got to -12 f, the panel started flashing "OFF". Compressor stopped running. Waiting for repairman.
A freezer running all the time might have a thermostat problem or the condenser fan motor isn’t working , not allowing air to be circulated causing the freezer to run all the time. I would look into that.
@@PhillipBridgesReviews I replaced the defrost timer . My freezer was running all the time ,staying to cold and dripping water on the floor. The new defrost timer resolved all the problems. That part was very easy to change too !!! Thank you !!!!
Hey Phillip, I got a new LG french doors kept in my garage (so not hooked up to H2O) and each day we find water under the freezer, also the freezer maxes at 3-7 degrees, not zero. Any clues my friend? Thanks much
I would check to see if there is anything in the defrost tube that is blocking water being drained down to the condenser. Like maybe a piece of foam from packaging. Also, I know you said it’s new but still check the evaporation pan. It might have a hair line crack that is allowing water to leak onto the floor. How full is the freezer? Sometimes I have found that I put a bulky item in the way and is restricting the circulation of air causing the temperature not cool properly. Move things around if that is the case. Check the coils too. Make sure dust or a piece of packaging from shipping is not stuck around there. Those are my thoughts. Thanks for an awesome question. 😎
This doesn't seem like a "complete solution", it seems like a band-aid approach. Do you do this every couple months?! Seems like a huge design flaw in the freezer. And why does it happen every other month (assuming no band-aid fix in between), is the freezer melting it on its own every other month? Please expound, Phillip. Thx.
My chest freezer did this a while back. I once again used my trusty hair dryer. I used it around the door seals. It took a few minutes then I grabbed a little crowbar and popped it open. Then used the crowbar to break off the ice build up once I got it open.
Don't do this. Never partially thaw frozen foods. Remove all foods and store below 32°F. Bacteria colonies quickly multiply. Dairy and seafood are especially vulnerable.
