RYEDALE PARISH #7: FLAXTON
Flaxton - “Flax Village”
Next up on the journey through Ryedale is the village of Flaxton, a linear settlement that stretches for two kilometres North to South. Here we are just North of the A64 and around nine miles away from York. Flaxton literally means Flax village, indicating this is one the places where historically it was made.
The main street is made up of former farms and farmhouses, with a few oddities thrown in to the mix too. These include a cairn like structure which is actually a well, a former school notable for its age, and an antique dealers next to the 18th century Blacksmiths Arms pub. Youll notice most of Flaxton is on one side of the road. That’s down to the massive village green which occupies its Western side.
The green, and by extension, The Keld are designated Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation or SINCs for short. They are common land, upon which cows were and still are to an extent, allowed to graze. The Keld has three ponds that include two breeding sites for the great crested newt. Flaxton is also the place to come if you’re in search of a marquee for any kind of event. Running parallel to it all is a public right of way that takes in some of the regularly unseen parts of the village.
