And sure enough, they still have data on me, but if I were to have a very good reason to get off the grid, they would have no connection to that reason. For example if I were to commit a crime or something. Then, of course you can delete like I said your Google account, Microsoft account, iCloud account, etc, get a clean Android ROM with no Google services or even better: a 3rd party OS like Ubport which is an Open Source version of Ubuntu Phone supported by the community only - Cannonical ended support for it, install some Linux distro on your computer, use proxys, VPNs, etc and basically give up TH-cam, Google Maps and all those convenient services we came to appreciate in our daily lives.

If you are using an android phone. You can turn off all the sensors with just one tap. It can shut down, camera, microphone, gyrsocope, barometer, accelerometer and other sensors. You can be so sure that no one, even google is listening to you.

My wife suggested I try some beard dye to match my graying beard to the rest of my hair. I found it in the store, took a picture of The colors to text to my wife. An hour later every ad I saw on google was Just For Men beard dye. Switched to iPhone the next day..deleted my google account and use iCloud and my corporate email.

I find it interesting that people are shocked at the level of data collection however they fail to realize that many websites collect very similar levels of data.. Facebook, Amazon, etc. The difference is you generally go through Google services which allows them to stitch together data where as websites like Facebook attempt to track you even when your not utilizing their services. They track other websites you visit, location, etc. In this era data collection is huge but the biggest concern is what's being done with the data!!!

I understand the point of this data collection is to help advertisers so companies that rely on ads can make more money, but at some point most of this data has to be pretty useless. I don’t understand the point of tailored ads, wouldn’t the people that the ads are tailored for already know about the product? Wouldn’t you be better off showing them something random instead so they can learn about a new product that they haven’t already bought, or didn’t already know about?
@Prapull I'd doubt google would use tensorflow server side for dealing with a large amount of data because JS is a bit inefficient for dealing with large datasets, but true, ML algorithms could help, but its likely they would still ignore or of a lot of the information, it could just slow down the algorithm, or cause a higher error rate with too much information often times with ML algorithms, by them thinking information is significant when its not. Its possible something could be pulled from this data, but I just feel its not worth the time, energy or investment, that you could get similar results by doing something cheaper.
Is not useless, actually is a fedback process. The new inputs replace the old ones that became obsolete, but the old ones that remain useful are kept, thus evolving with the user input. Knowing it doesn't reduce their effectiveness because the patterns adapt to that as well
Gary. You mention that Google has history going back a few years. You can control what is kept by Google. For instance when I downloaded my Google Takeout, they only had the past month of "My activity - assistant" as I had cleared that out about a month ago. While logged into your google account, go to myactivity.google.com and you will see the deletion option on the left. Be careful what you delete as it may prevent some features from working. Short answer, yes! You can never get Google fits tracking service to turn off (fit is not installed on my phone, and tracking across Google is disabled (every option)), so the running services kind of give it away. 😅 Gonna be downloading my takeout to get some more info. 😁

Yep. Google Home and Alexa are ALWAYS listening. Everything you say is stored and buffered (for like 1 or 2 seconds). Whenever you say the keyword, the recording that is sent to Google is of the current buffer including a bit before the device noticed the keyword.
The important part is ether or not google provides you the right to be forgotten or to have certain days removed. For example your purchase history and audio recordings specifically - you need to be able to have that permanently deleted at your will and it should be easy to do so. Obviously this harms Google’s business model and it’s very much against their interest to do so. But it’s a right we should all have.

Rahul Agarwal ...There are options that “say” it will allow you to delete the data. The only thing that will accomplish is hiding it from “you”. Out of sight, out of mind. EVERYTHING you do online is tracked and logged.

Keeping all this data really seems like a waste of money, they have to allocate massive amounts of storage space, and keep all of it running 24/7. This data is slightly useful to advertisers but not all of it, it can’t be worth this much investment to keep this much data, I feel like they have to be loosing money keeping all of this data, and going that far back, deleting those useless old records could save money.
John J ...The data is far more valuable than the cost to add drive storage space. Although I haven’t found an exact number, best estimates are Google adds 20 Petabytes (That’s 20,000,000 GB) of drive storage daily. It’s mind boggling! :)
yeah that really is, and that sounds like a lot of money to me, by deleting old unused data, they could save a lot of storage, and a lot of money. because they have to buy the hardware for the storage, and they also have to crate more physical space for the storage, that means more building materials and land. Then they also pay the electric bills to manage it, and that's not just keeping the data running, but error checking, and processing, and grabbing the data, and after a few years the drives need to be replaced, or you could start loosing data, and they also need to have backups, which takes even more money and space, they also have to pay more people to manage the servers, and to keep them running, and make sure they don't crash.

A data breach and someone uses your data maliciously 2. Someone hacks you 3. Some employee at X company looks at your data (Most of the time they can't. Google map is the most accurate and reliable mapping service. you can find all kinds of videos on TH-cam from educational videos to funny ones. The reason I have my job is because of the educational videos. I would be lost without Google maps. many companies have tried and failed for this very reason, even Apple couldn't one up Google services

I understand the point of this data collection is to help advertisers so companies that rely on ads can make more money, but at some point most of this data has to be pretty useless. I don’t understand the point of tailored ads, wouldn’t the people that the ads are tailored for already know about the product? Wouldn’t you be better off showing them something random instead so they can learn about a new product that they haven’t already bought, or didn’t already know about?

@Prapull I'd doubt google would use tensorflow server side for dealing with a large amount of data because JS is a bit inefficient for dealing with large datasets, but true, ML algorithms could help, but its likely they would still ignore or of a lot of the information, it could just slow down the algorithm, or cause a higher error rate with too much information often times with ML algorithms, by them thinking information is significant when its not. Its possible something could be pulled from this data, but I just feel its not worth the time, energy or investment, that you could get similar results by doing something cheaper.
Is not useless, actually is a fedback process. The new inputs replace the old ones that became obsolete, but the old ones that remain useful are kept, thus evolving with the user input. Knowing it doesn't reduce their effectiveness because the patterns adapt to that as well
Gary. You mention that Google has history going back a few years. You can control what is kept by Google.
For instance when I downloaded my Google Takeout, they only had the past month of "My activity - assistant" as I had cleared that out about a month ago. While logged into your google account, go to myactivity.google.com and you will see the deletion option on the left. Be careful what you delete as it may prevent some features from working. But you have access to pretty much anything . As you say it is amazing how much data is picked up.

Google doesn't need to read your emails in order to know what you bought. Just about every webshop readily tells google that via analytics. If at the same time you are logged into your google account one one of its many websites it is also easy for google to lonk that purchase to your account.

I was shocked when I realised that my commands to assistant was recorded and stored and even more shocking was that it even had recordings of my conversations which happened by accidentally firing up the assistant from lockscreen..

Short answer, yes! You can never get Google fits tracking service to turn off (fit is not installed on my phone, and tracking across Google is disabled (every option)), so the running services kind of give it away. 😅

Yep. Google Home and Alexa are ALWAYS listening. Everything you say is stored and buffered (for like 1 or 2 seconds). Whenever you say the keyword, the recording that is sent to Google is of the current buffer including a bit before the device noticed the keyword.
The important part is ether or not google provides you the right to be forgotten or to have certain days removed. For example your purchase history and audio recordings specifically - you need to be able to have that permanently deleted at your will and it should be easy to do so.
Obviously this harms Google’s business model and it’s very much against their interest to do so. But it’s a right we should all have.

Rahul Agarwal ...There are options that “say” it will allow you to delete the data. The only thing that will accomplish is hiding it from “you”. Out of sight, out of mind. EVERYTHING you do online is tracked and logged.
You can’t stop these companies from spying on you. Apple seems to be the least worse when it comes to this aspect

P.s. quick question and please forgive it's personal nature but how do you feel about Google home recording your children in the background (especially when you consider the noise cancelling in the microphone array should make them almost inaudible (is Google leaving noise cancelling off to collect more background data?)). Keeping all this data really seems like a waste of money, they have to allocate massive amounts of storage space, and keep all of it running 24/7. This data is slightly useful to advertisers but not all of it, it can’t be worth this much investment to keep this much data, I feel like they have to be loosing money keeping all of this data, and going that far back, deleting those useless old records could save money.
John J ...The data is far more valuable than the cost to add drive storage space. Although I haven’t found an exact number, best estimates are Google adds 20 Petabytes (That’s 20,000,000 GB) of drive storage daily. It’s mind boggling! :)
yeah that really is, and that sounds like a lot of money to me, by deleting old unused data, they could save a lot of storage, and a lot of money. because they have to buy the hardware for the storage, and they also have to crate more physical space for the storage, that means more building materials and land. Then they also pay the electric bills to manage it, and that's not just keeping the data running, but error checking, and processing, and grabbing the data, and after a few years the drives need to be replaced, or you could start loosing data, and they also need to have backups, which takes even more money and space, they also have to pay more people to manage the servers, and to keep them running, and make sure they don't crash.

A data breach and someone uses your data maliciously 2. Someone hacks you 3. Some employee at X company looks at your data (Most of the time they can't. Data is encrypted in their end, or most don't have access to it)
