- Yellow Jackets nest (Dolichovespula Arenaria) HUGE nest removed from inside house between rafters. While vacuuming, the wasps swarmed my vacuum and me! Once hope, I removed the larvae from the cells and fed them to my chickens (as usual!) but not before getting some incredibly close up shots of the nest and their eating habits!

Back in the early 60's when I was 8 years old, I would go out with my friends to old empty shacks and find large paper wasp nest, some as big as a plate and we would knock them down and the have to go back to retrieve the nest because the larva was our free fishing bait . This was another one of those things that I never mentioned to my mother, she would have over reacted as mothers all do.
How did you do that without getting the fuck stung out of you?

I actually ate yellow-jacket larvae before, they taste like green wheat. Bit risky getting them but if you got a nest near your camp, which is annoying, you might just want to get rid of them. I just used flame and smoke to flush out the adults in to an open fire and watched them burst like pop corn, after the stragglers returned and fried too, I inspected the nest and found these bopping larvae things. Figured, protein is protein, so I just briefly seared the whole nest section on a stick in the flames and then just ate them like sunflower seeds, gave me a real energy boost after.
I watched a video, people living in Brazil and surround woods eating yellow jacket larvae as a delicacy, very tasty they say, so, they hunt them down by risking and ignoring many stings.

Years ago my late Dad used to be employed as a graphic illustrator for a UK research centre for pests and crop diseases. My Dad used hand draw all kinds of insects through their various stages of growth using a microscope to visibly note every part of the insect in the minutest detail. Most of his illustrations were used for books and many for research and scientific thesis. I’m very lucky (and extremely proud) to still have copies of some of his original drawings. People really do not realise how amazing insects look under a microscope. They are a truly beautiful visual creation, even if their soul purpose is to be annoying!!❤️

Idk why, buts it’s the fact that the nests are gone and (kinda destroyed) that’s satisfying. This is mainly because wasps freak me tf out since they can sting more than once unlike bees.

Jokes aside, there's something humbling to be said about a household nuisance like hornet nests being turned in to something beneficial (being fed to farm animals), everything has a reason to exist in nature, and a purpose it can be fitted to. Thanks for doing what you do, man.

Normally I'm terrified of wasps (like I will walk all the way around my yard to avoid a single wasp) but watching you vacuum them up and then feeding the larva to your chickens feels super nice

It's horrible, in the garages next to our house there was a nest just sitting right in there. doesn't help that my bedroom is right next to said garage and overheating cus I don't want the window open. The nest is gone now, so I can have it open more....

They are actually beneficial to ecosystems just like most insects. They hunt pests, pollinate flowers and help decompose rotting fruit and starchy vegetables.
Obviously they aren't very friendly to neighbours so unfortunately they gotta go when they try to move in.

The chickens running when you call them is always super funny. I dont have yellow jackets, but I do have carpenter bees that will sometimes drill holes in my porch ceiling in the 2x6's. They are not aggressive, and i enjoy studying them. They are strong though, they can rip wood, like pretty good size chunks. Its surprising. Anyway, I enjoyed the video😃
They just collect wood so they can make you a chair
Nice thing about carpenter bees is they absolutely hate wasps, and will drive them off. It's cool to see them do aerial intercepts and smash into them. Oddly, the male has no stinger, and he's the one left to defend the nest. If you have one that's always there and flies around to challenge you, then goes away after sizing you up, that's him. The female is out foraging, and is rarely there in daylight hours. I like them because I hate wasps and they keep them at bay. I wish they weren't so destructive but I can tolerate them where they are.

@@davidp7833 If you decide to test that and get close, be sure you are dealing with Carpenters and not regular Bumblebees. Carpenters only nest as a pair, as far as I know. If there's more than two, assume they aren't Carpenters bees

So, I've always had an interest in bees. Found your channel on accident last night, then I went through your videos and saw that you're an LPN and I insta-subscribed (I'm 2nd semester nursing student myself going for an RN).
Your videos are great. I use to fear bees a lot, but now I leave the paper wasp nests on the sides of my house alone as long as they're not getting into places they shouldn't be. They're pretty docile and you can get pretty close without upsetting them. Love your channel man, keep up the good work.

I'm a kid. And I always have a wasp nest in me moms kitchen, or me bedroom window! I use a flying insect spray and it automatically kills the wasps and me and my bro knock the nest down. But idk how but u pulling these larva out is so satisfying and enjoyful lol
