This Pro-Life Pastor's Sermon on Abortion Deserves a Larger Audience | NYT Opinion

  • In the debate over abortion, it often seems there’s not much room for nuance: You’re either for it or against it.
But in the Opinion video above, the Rev. Clinton L. Stancil, the pastor of Wayman A.M.E. Church in St. Louis, articulates a position that is heard all too rarely, particularly among faith leaders.
He is opposed to abortion on moral grounds and counsels his parishioners against getting the procedure. But he is also vehemently supportive of a woman’s right to choose. In an interview with Opinion Video, he called the Supreme Court decision that eliminated the constitutional right to abortion “a tragedy.”
Mr. Stancil, 60, who was a sales executive for IBM before entering the ministry, anchors his pro-choice position in Scripture. But he is also deeply concerned that the new restrictions on abortion access will disproportionately harm Black communities, spurring poverty and crime. (Black women have a far higher abortion rate than white women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.)
Mr. Stancil, who is active on civil rights issues in St. Louis and has discussed the abortion debate in his sermons this year, offered to deliver his guest essay in the form of a sermon. We recorded it as a postscript to a Sunday service this month.
As it has for many houses of worship in the United States, attendance at Wayman A.M.E. still hasn’t rebounded to prepandemic levels. So Mr. Stancil, a kinetic preacher whose partly improvised sermons often run half an hour or more, finds himself these days speaking to a congregation that is mostly tuning in via the church’s live streams. We thought his message deserved a wider audience.

Hello, I’m Kirk Semple, and I produced this Opinion Video. When I first heard the Rev. Clinton L. Stancil preach this year, I knew I wanted to work with him on a video. Over the course of numerous conversations, he explained to me how his views on abortion had evolved. He anchors his lifelong, anti-abortion stance in Scripture, but has come to his pro-choice views more recently, through ministering to disadvantaged Black communities around the country. For him, discussions about abortion and abortion rights in the Black population shouldn’t be separated from discussions about police prejudice, high unemployment rates, the lack of access to health care, the poor state of urban schooling and what he called “the school-to-prison pipeline.” I’d love to know what you think of the video, and what’s on your mind regarding abortion rights.

No amount of screaming into the microphone or false bravado will make what this man is saying congruent with scripture. To equate a life without a wall-street job to not living at all is a disgrace, especially coming from a church leader. Blessed are the meek, blessed are the poor. But making it illegal in many cases doesn't protect the sanctity of the woman's life! That's the point!!
A good medical example is an ectopic pregnancy. This is still a pregnancy. It's a baby forming outside the womb and incredibly dangerous for the woman to let carry on. And to make it illegal to have an abortion would be condemning the woman to death.
Or if you know your baby won't survive for that long once born because of a defect. Or will spend the rest of their life in pain with no quality of life.
You cannot be pro-life and disregard the life of the woman. She was there first and she still deserves life. You saying that her life is less important than a baby she never wanted, planned or was even forced upon her is disgusting.

Whether that is because of financial or physical reasons, or any other reason, we cannot make those decisions for them. It makes me deeply sad, but that is the reality of our world. Thanks for sharing! Even beyond the moral quandary and socioeconomic issues, abortion is a hugely important healthcare issue.
A couple could do everything right by traditional religious standards... They get married, and then because he has a genetic issue or she's at high risk of dying in childbirth they always use protection. He even gets a vasectomy, but one day she gets pregnant anyway. It happens. Now what? Should they have to bring a baby into the world with a horrible disease or with no mother? It's not just a religious or financial consideration, but a life/death medical decision!
And what about when a fetus dies in utero? It's not uncommon, and removing it is medically considered an abortion in many places. Waiting for it to be naturally 'flushed out' can take weeks and is inhumane for a grieving would-be mother, not to mention the physical pain and risk of life-threatening infections. Again, this is a life/death medical decision!
Pregnancy is not the magical journey that Christian influencers would like us all to believe in. There's a lot that can go wrong and making it illegal for a person or their doctor to choose an abortion is just so shortsighted and wrong. Some people in this country seem to think of abortion as a free pass for irresponsible immoral idiots, but it's not. It's a tough choice that most people take very seriously when faced with it, and it's medical necessity in so many cases. Outlawing it is insane.

Life is much better than death, at the end of Deuteronomy 30:19, God says, "Therefore choose life;" He commands us to choose life, meaning we must do so. Just as when Adam was told he couldn't eat the fruit. We as Christians shouldn't advocate for wrong decisions that God has strictly told us not to commit. So, just because of circumstances you shouldn't choose whether a child gets to live or die. We can't commit murder on an adult that's having a bad life so why assume that a child will have one and base abortion (the unlawful killing of an unborn child) on that? A child/fetus whatever you want to call it, is a human inside and outside of the womb so we ought to give them the dignity and respect that God has given all of us. They. Are. Our. Neighbors.

Women of color have to deal with the double whammy of racism and sexism, though. If they have a child, then they are castigated as "welfare moms", but if they have an abortion, then evangelicals call them evil murderers. It's a no-win situation. A great solution would be to do in the US what we have here in Germany: it's called Kindergeld, and it's a child allowance for all families with kids. You get 219 Euros per month. It's not a lot, but you could use it for things like baby nappies and formula. Every woman who works is guaranteed paid maternity leave. "The unborn" are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike orphans, they don't need money, education, or childcare; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. It's almost as if, by being born, they have died to you. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners, immigrants, the sick, the poor, widows, orphans. All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible, they all get thrown under the bus for the unborn

But the government isn’t ruled by religious beliefs these days and abortion was implemented by the Democratic Party that had ties with the KKK. So yes we all have a choice that excludes political interference but why is he trying to justify her choices if he’s Pro Life. Society which is ruled by government and media put a mindset to those who believe otherwise will crucify him if he doesn’t form to their way just shows he’s been corrupted. If it’s the people versus government control we have our rights so why doesn’t he stand on his beliefs while acknowledging some that don’t and even with disagreement realizes people make their own choices and it is not his place to support them neither congratulate them. “If you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for anything” that’s goes to anyone who looks for approval from others and social acceptance.

Maybe the human being will suffer in its adolescence and/or adulthood. We don't know.
It's a scientific fact that life begins at conception. Leading geneticists and embryologist (a lot of them who are pro-choice) agree with that and a lot of science has helped us to affirm this since Roe v. Wade.

I enjoy this video. I think this issue should be seen in many shades of grey, never clear black and white. So many factors come into a reason someone might choose abortion. I always feel that if prolife people want babies to be born in the US then we need to as a country charge more taxes to support these people who need it! Where are the homes where people might help mothers get on their feet? Where are the places handing out more care for kids who need it? IF we outlaw abortion then we need to be prepared to put more money and effort into a broken system that says you must have that baby but once its out we will give you little to no help to support raising that baby!

The preacher is correct that it’s a choice but what people really want is the blessings (yeah it’s ok with me to take the life of your kid) and the affirmation of those who DONOT agree.
You can chose what ever you want to do but you cant do it with my blessing.
And the argument about caring for the child before it is born and not caring after the child is born a false choice.
It is The attempt to redirect responsibly from the mother for the child onto citizens that will not give her their blessing to terminate the life of her child. And use it as justification.
It’s wrong and the preacher is wrong for trying to justify abortion because he claims those who won’t give their blessing won’t take care of the child after it’s born. Trying to spare the child from cruelty, suffering or disadvantaged life does NOT override the Childs right to life.
The only responsibility of the citizen is to care about the life of the child.
Caring and support of the child is the mothers responsibility and the fathers responsibility. This attitude comes from a generation of welfare recipients that don’t feel
They should be responsible for their own support.
In spite of all the struggles and injustices The black family was intact before 1962 but after this year you can see how the black family has been dismantled by welfare legislation by "white democrat legislators.". The year welfare stated up in America. The incentive was to have children you couldn't support and not be married. this is why back children have been without fathers more than any other racal group. look it up!
It’s this kind of message that fuels victim dependency onto poor people.
    and
"A white legislator on black bodies" comment is a twisted comment that is bigoted. It was Democrat White legislators that crippled the black people with welfare. It was the White democrat that opened the doors to abortion starting with Margaret Sanger to dispose of undesirables. It was the white democrat Judges 7-2 that refused to acknowledge black people as humans to deny them freedom in Dredd Scott. It was the white democrats that voted overwhelmingly to deny blacks civil rights in 1960. Come on man open your eyes my black brother and my black sister your being hustled by people pretending to be on your side but want to put you back in chains. They tell you they are your friend just keep voting for me. Its white Democrat legislators and a white Democrat President that said "if you don't vote for me you aint black." Joe Biden is saying He owns your blackness and your identity. Joe Biden.
