    My mom's old boyfriend had a JD 410 backhoe from the 1970's at his gravel operation. I used to use it to dig out the gravel and then load it on the dump truck to be spread on the township roads. It was a nice backhoe to operate. Also one of the contractors in town used to use his for digging basements and I was the level stick operator for him to make sure the floor of the basement was level. Worked good.

      Yeah I think it's pretty common issues with any old machine like this, but it's still going so I have no complaints!

    Hey man! I wanna start off by saying thank you for all these videos on the John deere 410 loader backhoe. I recent aquired a 1975 john deere 310 loader backhoe last week and honestly 100% without your videos would still not know how to operate it. It is my first loader backhoe and I had 0 experience. Since watching these videos I can now operate it and have removed a few stumps around the yard.
    I am wondering if it would be possible for you to do a video on checking fluids/filling fluids as well as how to replace hydraulic lines. After using it this weekend I found one of the metal hydraulic lines going to the front loader is leaking. I am unsure of even how to check the level, and how on earth I would go about replacing it - draining the fluid versus just lifting up the buckets and replacing. I am clueless. Any chance you can do that bud?? Would be super helpful to see some more "loader backhoe for newbies" videos. Thanks! - Travis from Maine.

      Hello, glad my videos help!
      Yes I need to do more videos on it, I will try to get some done soon.
      To check the hydraulic oil the is a dipstick right in front of the seat.
      And for the hydraulic line, you do not need to drain out the oil in the machine, just pull the line off and it'll all be good.
      You will have a little oil leak out of the line but once the line is empty the oil will stop flowing.
      Never pull a hydraulic line if it is under pressure like if the loader is lifter etc. Once the line is loosened and it looses pressure the loader will come crashing down spraying oil everywhere.
      Also keep clear of all hydraulic leaks because they will cut right through the skin causing serious injury.
      Good luck on you machine!

      th-cam.com/video/xytdqluE7lA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=atVfDZQH8W7ogWUq this is a link to a video on changing fluids. If you go to the comment section there's one near the bottom with the most replies, like 26, in there a guy has a PDF link for military manuals for a 410. It's close enough that most of the info applies for 310. It's been a big help for mine. I'd share the direct link but I don't know how to do that. Edit: also do you still have your machine because I'm up north by houlton and mine has a new hose on the front, just bought it 2 weeks ago from a guy who said his son had it.

    I have the same machine. I was never able to get it in park. I was looking for a way to fix this because it's annoying always trying to anchor. Thanks I never thought to put it in gear, I was always in neutral when trying to engage the brake. It works fine now!
    Your hoe controls are installed backwards. That's why they scrape the window and the out riggers. If your loosen the bolts at the base they are 360 adjustable. On this machine they are designed to be installed curved toward operator and outward 45. Meaning the hand hold should rest between 4 &5 o'clock on the right and 7&8 on the left. The out riggers handles should face 3&9 o'clock . This makes it much more comfortable to operate and gives no scrape clearance for all functions.

    Great information, thanks. Over here machines of that age are mainly JCB's. I think top of my todo list would be to rebuild the backhoe levers, it is a big of a worry that you can catch the outrigger lever

    • @ericneckel8646
      @ericneckel8646 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They have "Jam" nuts which allows you to lock them down at any clock position...Just loosen, rotate control lever until it clears the stableiser lever, then tighten the jam nut.

    • @ImaginaryMachines
      @ImaginaryMachines  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There aren't a hole lot of JCB's over here, the only old JCB I know of was used at a scrap yard, it was a huge beast of a backhoe!

    Nice video, I just go one of these today and it all seems to be in great shape. The one question that I have is how do you tell your front bucket is flat on the ground from the drivers seat. You did a great job giving the tour of the JD 410

    • @johnjyoungjr7400
      @johnjyoungjr7400 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Mine has a 5-6 ft metal rod welded to the bucket it runs up the arms through two pieces of four inch tubing. The rod is marked (paint, marker, etc) when the bucket is flat to be held ground. If you see how it’s done it’s very simple. Hope the his helps.

    I'm new to a 1972 John Deere 410. Could you do a video explaining how to use the Reverser Unit. I always depress the clutch when changing direction. Also, show how to use the Differential Lock - since I'm clutching all the time, I can't step on the Differential Lock Pedal at the same time. Thank you

    • @ImaginaryMachines
      @ImaginaryMachines  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'll do a video on it when I get some time.
      What I do is I set the hand throttle at idle then use the foot throttle to raise the engine speed when driving or using the loader. Then when going from forward to reverse I just let off the foot throttle so it drops to a idle switch directions, when it starts to take off I just give it a little gas. If you change direction at a high engine speed it will jerk around and I'm always afraid of damaging something. I also only switch directions without the clutch in 1st or 2nd gear (at idle in 2nd gear) you don't want to change direction if you are going very fast or have a lot of momentum behind you.
      I will also shift to neutral on the shuttle, then when the machine comes to a stop then I'll switch directions.
      It is also impossible to shift to reverse when in high range.
      The diff lock is something I don't use very often, only when digging with the loader or pushing into a hard pile of dirt. When you get better at shifting with the shuttle then that should free up your left foot to use the diff lock. Make sure you don't turn with the differential locked be cause I have heard you can damage something.
      I'll try and get a video out when I get the time, hope this helps till then

      No clutch needed. Just move the column to neutral slow down then hit reverse. All while machine is in gear no foot on the clutch. You only need the clutch for gear change

  • @izatso1

    Have you ever replaced the ball joints up front? I have a '79 that blew a steering cylinder seal and I need to get the ball joint out of the way to work on it. It appears that I need to drop the counter weight below the front end?

    • @ImaginaryMachines
      @ImaginaryMachines  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never done anything with the front end, closest I came was removing the whole front end when I pulled the engine for the rebuild.

    There is a part facing forward where the panel has been removed due to wiring issues. Do you know the name and function of that part? I just purchased a 1979 John Deere 310-B and when I removed that cover that part was sitting inside and disconnected. Not sure what that part does. Thanks. Love seeing your videos. They are so helpful

      @@ImaginaryMachines At 1:33 you are pointing to the panel you removed due to wiring issues. On the left side of that panel there is a gray part that protrudes out from the inside of that open panel. It almost looks like a water faucet in shape. That part is what I do not know what it is for.On my backhoe it was laying inside on the floor. Thanks again.

      Sorry for the slow reply somehow missed this comment.
      Ok that is for the "cold start", a can of starter fluid screws onto that spout and there is a tiny plastic line that goes from that spout to the intake.
      I have never used this feature, the line on mine isn't even hooked up, I have it plugged with silicone to keep dust out of the intake

    • @paulo5861

      @@ImaginaryMachines Thank you so much. I would have never guessed that parts function and now I know. That part was inside the side cover laying down on it's side with a short piece of line attached to the part ending near a cable tie. No wonder why this part was not needed or considered essential since starter fluid can be sprayed near the air filter intake port. Thanks again

      My 410 doesn't have any pedals on the hoe controls, my best guess would be a auxiliary for a thumb?
