Wow!! I haven't seen this video since 1995/96 when I first purchased my first grouping of Dept. 56 Christmas in the City buildings. I still use pickling salt in my displays. Back then, the pieces were so much bigger than they make today. I can't believe it has been almost 30 years since I saw this. My video was eaten up in the VHS back in the day. Before the Internet, I loved receiving the Green Heritage Village book and the Quartley magazine in the 1990s.

Every year I help my grandmother to create a village under her christmas tree using mostly department 56 pieces. It's really cool seeing this since ive done it for 20 years or so now. It's like seeing all the silverware and cups you use in a movie.
edit: I dont know if they make the same ones every year but the ones in this VHS are the EXACT same buildings my grandmother uses I am planning on showing this to her.

Oh wow! My mom does the same thing with my nieces. She'll usually buy a new piece every year based around an event or vacation from the past year and will add that to the overall village. It's really fun!

These displays are like a tangible scene from a Bob Ross painting and what better place to display all these lovely highly flammable features made from polystyrene, glue and spay paint than just above your roaring fireplace.
I also like how Tom Underwood also spent hours crafting a quaint Dickensian winter scene then at 30:38 he dumps a fast food joint right in the middle of the village. When Oliver Twist begged for more he must have been asking for another Big Mac.
