- Damien Johnson signed for Rovers as an 18 year old in 1997 after leaving his native Northern Irish club, Portadown. The youngster made his Rovers debut in the second leg of a League Cup tie away at Preston in September 1997. A game in which Rovers lost 1-0 having won the first leg 6-0 at Ewood Park. That was to be Johnson's only appearance in is first season at the club as he was allwoed to join Nottingham Forest on loan for 6 months in January 1998.
With a Rovers squad containing exciting young talent in the like of Damien Duff, David Dunn and Matt Jansen, Johnson felt more at home in a Rovers shirt in the 1998/99 season, making 25 appearances in all competitions and scoring one goal. That one goal being an impressive diving header against Arsenal at Ewood Park.
Following Rovers' relegation to the Championship in May 1999, Johnson saw himself make a combined 45 appearances for the club in the second tier of English football over the next two seasons. He scored just the one goal during that period, in the form of another diving header, this time against Huddersfield town. However, he played a role as a valuable squad player who could play centrally in midfield and out wide as a winger when needed.
Johnson played a part in helping Rovers win promotion back to the Premier League in May 2001, however saw his opportunities limited in the 2001/02 season. Damien was to only feature 12 times in all competitions in Rovers' first season back in the top flight, but he did score two goals. The first goal being part of seven that Rovers put past West Ham and the other being a winner against Man City in a League cup tie. The 2001/02 season was Damien Johnson's last as a Rovers player and in March 2002 he was allowed to join Championship Birmingham City on a permanent deal.
Johnson has been working at Blackburn Rovers in a coaching capacity since 2015 and continues to do so at the time of writing in 2024.
