Hi AJ, love your entrance, beautiful pergola garden, it looks awesome. About the dahlias, over here digging up dahlias and flowering bulbs is not something that we generally do. But I have come to understand that this is a general practice that gardeners in colder growing zones go through each year or they may risk not seeing their Dahlias grow again the following season. Wishing you much success with the experiments💪🏾
Good Day Ms Germaine! 💚 Thanks for the kind words this early morning here!🤗 What zone are you in again? Hey as far as the dahlias…if I don’t HAVE TO dig em up…please spare me🤣. Thanks for the support, its much appreciated. Have a great day🍁
Loved your video, I live in zone 7a, 7b. Western N.C. This is my first year growing Dahlias and I absolutely love them. I'm going to experiment with this plan! It makes a lot of sense to me, as the mulch along with the Black plastic would help generate heat and also protect from rot. Also appreciate the pointers on protecting your tools from disease and pre sharpening. These are issues I think we all could use a reminder of! Thank you, for your time to make this impressive video!
Hi, I've been growing them since 2002, zone 7b. This winter we got a lot more rain and unexpected 6 degree freeze. I lost one, which the first time I ever lost any. I will be covering them this year in that area with a tarp, and mulch really well. I do mulch with leaves. as a tip for anyone, the plant tags, i make mine with old mini blinds, some i paint and use my silhouette to cut out the names. Some i use sharpie.
Love your video. Looking forward to seeing your results. I usually use that black plastic during the summer to solarize my garden beds. With your experiment, I will get to see how it will work to protect from the cold winter. In my zone 9b, we don’t have many hard freezes.
I so appreciate you checking out the video @ My Granny’s Garden! Using the black plastic as a solar maximizer is a trick I need to adapt too! It does take a while for the weather to heat up in the early spring so…. Thanks so much for watching/commenting!
Hi AJ I have enjoyed your video at the same time. I have learned a lot would love to continue on learning from your experience and your research thanks for sharing.
I have to be honest. I didn’t even know that people dug up dahlia tubers and cannas and such until I saw it on YT. 🤷🏽♀️ I guess we’re pretty spoiled out here in Cali. Hopefully it all works out for you. 💚

Im so glad you liked it! I moved to growing them in pots only now. It seems to work very well but I still have to remove them and overwinter them.

Hi AJ, Did you get success on this method? I’m planning to leave mine on the ground this year. I’m also in zone 7a.
Hi! I was surprised by a 70-80% success rate. I would save the choice dahlias and overwinter the rest. Best of luck to you!
Love your video
Thank you so much!
