Ford Focus coolant leak heater core pipe leaks coolant on carpet orings tips

  • G'day guys with only a revised heater core with fixed pipes available in Australia for $575 and all the associated labour to replace the entire unit located in centre of dashboard we have repaired this particular car with orings. The lower hose is a lot firmer in position and after making this video had to replace the orings several times to arrest the leaks. The car has run for hours been road tested carpet dried and returned to customer. Make sure to lubricate orings and use narrow orings. Make sure to confidently install the pipes in one firm action as they are exactly lined up. Refill with water to test. Do not dought yourself and jiggle hoses. Of print pinched or misinstalled simply repeat the procedure until you get it right. O. This vehicle the upper pipe o-ring was disintegrated whilst lower was actually ok. So it it's top one leaking do yourself a favour and replace only the top one. As it seems bottom one is under less stress and heat.

The heater works fine and I notice the coolant is slowly decreasing, but I can't see the pipes I think the dashboard should be removed to see and also I don't want to take it to the dealer they may cheat and say the whole unit should be replaced because the AC and the heater in one unit in the Mustang.. Great informative video, and I have had this fault TWICE on my Focus! May I suggest that in future, you use a genuine Ford O ring as they are cheap as anything and have specific chamfer edging which generic O rings don't and will likely prematurely fail because of it!

@@ORIGINOLINDIVIDUAL Hello. I actually did the repair. First, the O-ring that worked for me is 17x2.0 (mm metric). 17x2.5 is just too thick. Then Everyone says to put the O-ring on the female part of the pipe. Well I could not do that. So what I did was put the O-ring around 50% way in on the male part of the pipe. That way the female has time to 'straighten up' and move the proper way into the male one. For me this was two man job. I had a friend push the pipes from the outside. That way I could see when the two pipes were properly sealed to each other. I put on the plastic clips and for now the repair is working fine. Good luck with your car!

Just blow out the coolant remaining in the matrix, clean the surfaces of the pipes where they push together with brake cleaner and blue paper towel, bosh the groove up with silicone and around the other pipe up to the lip and press together.
Leave a millimetre till the RTV dries and then push it the rest and install the clip.

I have a 2008 Focus with 300,000 miles on it (very well maintained highway car). My floor mat (a big rubber spill-proof type) has been getting wet on the driver's side. Yesterday, about halfway through a 1 hour commute, I noticed my leg was wet, and that liquid was lightly spraying toward the floor mat from under the dash- then it simply stopped and did not happen again. It was a cool, slightly drizzly day. The defrost mix with floor temp was set to warm, heater motor running medium speed, wipers on intermittent, etc. However, the liquid was not hot at all. not even warm. it has a bitter slightly sweet taste, but no particular oder I could discern. probably engine coolant, I will keep you posted.

Have a look at the position of the plastic tab clips and those with metal ones you need a bit of force. Use a pick angled point to pry the sides and slowly use the plastic trim remover tool.

Pointing out that the o-ring must go in the groove first and not on the coolant pipe shaft is what saved me as well as pushing it in once (not pulling it out or playing around with it) until it stops.
