    This is my favorite version. Costumes, scenery, and acting is superb.
    Elizabeth, Mr. collins, Mrs. Bennet, Lydia, and Lady Catherine are excellently presented.

    This is my favourite version. She's not rude but expressive. He actually uses his voice to express himself. And his disappointment in her rejection was the only emotion he showed until she agrees at the end. He is holding it all in.

    Rintoul's Mr. Darcy is, in this scene, what I have always pictured he was in the novel. The man is all pride, he is conceited, he s scolding her. She is wonderful, too. Well done, both of them! The best first proposal, when it comes to being faithful to the novel! (although I do not considerer faithfulness to Austen's novel a very strong reason for enjoing the movies based upon it...)

    • @benedictcowell6547

      I do consider fidelity to the author essential in a film which launches itself under the title of a novel. A film 'version' is an 'adaptation' of another's work and it matters not whether the author died yesterday or 206 years ago, It is tantamount to theft. Some limitations are necessary of course, but they they have to be licensed by the text, and all except ne instance in this version are so. which is why this version is so very good and Elizabeth Garvie is the best Lizzie I have struck. She performs, and is directed, to make the camera serve the author rather than the director or box office. Her voice, her eyes, her facial expressions render Jane Austen's creation perfectly.

    I love this version and agree with your assessment of Elizabeth Garvie. She gives such a nuanced performance here. David Rintoul is exactly as I imagined him. This version does not give us much insight into Darcy unfortunately. His smile at the end of the series when they are walking is transformative. Love being reminded of this version. Why are some people critizing this 1980 version? I own both the 1980 and 1995 ones but the 1980 version has a slight edge over 1995. Just because this way filmed more like a play than a movie,well, this early BBC effort was brilliant. I even liked all the actors especially David Rintoul as Mr. Darcy.He is true to the character of Darcy and captivates all his nuances with subtlety. Modernists should appreciate this piece of art since more modern adaptations get more stupid than delightful.

    I agree with all the reviewers who have said that this is the best television adaptation of Jane Austen’s greatest novel “Pride & Prejudice”. Elizabeth Garvie plays the novel’s central character Elizabeth Bennett excellently, but for me, David Rintoul’s Fitzwilliam Darcy is even better. The very handsome Rintoul plays Darcy exactly as written by the author. His pride, conceit and aloofness makes it easy to see why Elizabeth Bennett dislikes him so much at first. Of course she has also been misled in her opinion of him by George Wickham’s account of him. Another standout acting performance is given by Judy Parfitt as Darcy’s aunt Lady Catherine De Bourgh. All of the novel’s characters are well played and this 1980 televised version is definitely my favourite adaptation of the book.

    This is such an unfair comment to make since Mr. Darcy, in "Pride & Prejudice", is portrayed correctly in this version. Perhaps people like you and others need a more romantic, puppy dog looking Mr. Darcy. Okay, fine with that BUT don't go critizing David Rintoul's portrayal since his is perhaps a more difficult performance. To show the subtle changes in body language, voice, and looks is not so easy as it seems. Read the actual book and see how the book character compares to this version.

    Damn. Never occurred to me before. Rintoul is playing Darcy as being somewhere in 'the spectrum'--not simply suppressing his emotions--deeply upset by them. He's incredibly uncomfortable--angry--to have to expose himself to Elizabeth this way. He's angry at her for making him feel so strongly, when any strong emotion makes him uncomfortable.
    Elizabeth has no such problem, but she has developed a restraint in response to her family's marginal stature within the upper class. They are both proud, both prejudiced. But she doesn't understand who he is, because his very nature makes it impossible to share his true feelings. HIs proposal therefore comes across as an insult. And she still believes in Wickham's good nature--Wickham being a classic narcissist, skilled at putting up a false front to get what he wants from others. Therefore, she judges Darcy harshly for his correct assessment of Wickham's true self.
    When Austen wrote, little was known about what we now call autism, and when mild, as it is here, it was probably mainly treated as mere haughtiness. Darcy is a good person, under his hauteur--you can see Rintoul's Darcy struggling, knowing her words are true, that he's behaved horribly. But it's like asking Sheldon Cooper not to be rude. Difference is, this isn't a sitcom, and it's not being played for laughs.
    Fascinating.

    Yes. Elizabeth Garvie does so good as Lizzie, but David Rintoul doesn't do so well. If I could combine the 2005 Mr. Darcy and this Elizabeth Bennet, with the accuracy of the 1995 version, that would be ideal.

    • @villiamo3861
      @villiamo3861 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The accuracy of the 1995 version! Darcy coming from the lake in a sexed-up wet shirt (and even that not going to the ludicrous extent its adapter, Andrew Davies, wanted)? Where was that in the novel? Ghastly. No, this Fay Weldon adaptation, filmed as a tv series in 1979 and broadcast in 1980 is without question the most accurate version, ie in being close to the book. And to my mind it is by far the best version.

    (cont.) D. Rintoul parece-me ter a atuação menos atraente, apesar de que acho que sua atuação é mais sutil do que as demais. Entretanto, creio que o problema maior de Rintoul - e desta versão em si - é que não há química entre ele e E.Garvin. Este creio é o grande problema de um Darcy, qualquer que seja o ator, pois Darcy só "existe" a medida que ele interage com Lizzy; enquanto que Lizzy é um personagem mais independente. A química se encontra de verdade entre CF e JE, e MM e KN.
