    Ice definetly has the largest skillgap to overcome. First there is a massive difference between normal and pro players. And then there is the gap between Pros and Micka.

      Ice (and bobsleigh) is very punishing, you can lose seconds with one bad turn, and you can gain tons of time with a really clean run. It’s my favorite map style, i’m pretty decent at it but I don’t think i’ll ever be as good as a player like Micka

      Super hard fstunt maps also usually have gigantic timegaps, because scarcely every does anyone hunt them and gets them done clean, sadly the genre is not popular, for the most part

    Thing about Bobsled is: it's quite easy to get it to a point where it feels decent. Like, invest 10 hours into bobsled and you'll feel like an ice tunnel god. Invest 10 hours into tech and you're literally right where you started, still crashing that inside wall

    • @T3n50r
      @T3n50r 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      And the more you learn about tech and get into tech servers, the more ridiculous it becomes. Neo-slides, wall hits, over walls etc. being included into these which all have their own time frame for mastering. It's my favorite style of maps after LOL.

    • @thobrik
      @thobrik 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is interesting. Coming from TMUF/TMNF, tech is the only style I can play relatively well at. I suck at all the others.

  • @Takyodor2
    @Takyodor2 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    "Acrobatic" (its name in TMNF at least) is fun and deserves its own category I think. Centered around wall rides, half pipes, precise vertical jumps and loops/tunnels.
    "Non-transitional tech" and "obstacle" (sometimes known as "French mapping") also exists, but I'm not sure we're missing out on anything by not mentioning them...

  • @TekTekila

    Great overview!
    I'd only add a precision regarding the "endurance - short - mini" tags for RPG. As RPG is intended to be "endurance" by nature, "Mini-RPGs" are standard lenght map with a focus on typical RPG tricks, rather than story-telling scenery and pathfinding.

    A tip for people that want to get into Fullspeed: Dont look at your skidmarks too much and stop worrying about speedslides since its way more importamt to not fuck up the elements. If you drive them wrong you will lose more speed then any speeddrift can give you. If you feel comrotable with the elements start by overlapping at ~50% and build from there

  • @grimreefer213

    One hour of interesting Trackmania content, count me in!
    Ice is by far my favorite map style, partially because it’s one of the only things i’m good at lol.
    When I first started playing TM and I played my first ice track; I was struggling so much and losing so much speed in the turns I was baffled. I figured I must be doing something wrong and then I learned what ice slides were. So I spent the next few days playing the same ice track over and over trying to learn the ice mechanics. Eventually I was able to get gold medal and then the author time and that’s when I became hooked on ice tracks.
    Ice is quite punishing when you’re a beginner, but nailing perfect ice slides or a perfect bobsleigh turn is immensely satisfying. The skill floor is higher so it’s easier to stand out if you put in the effort to learn it

    The only 2 styles I can think of that might have been worth a mention (arguably, they might not be significant enough to have mentioned, maybe as sub styles) are tower maps, which are really just trial maps with a focus on vertical progression, and cube maps, which are just mini trial maps in a small, confined area.

    Note on bobsleigh(as a bob enjoyer):
    The physics changed on it (prob between the writing of the video and the release date, judging on the way it was explained). First of all, go watch xEmlanx's(one of the best bobsleigh players, and definitely the best bobsleigh mapper) *newest* bob physics video(there are multiple bc nadeo keeps changing it lmao). Now the bobsleigh strats are to slowly smooth steer at slower speeds (as fast as possible without letting the nose of your car dip) and entries are really important, and to steer to full quicker and quicker the faster you are(keyboard ig just use aks in acsending order. Theres one of the best bob players Catzii who plays kb, so I would watch his runs which you can do because hes like always top 5) Enter like 1/4 block before the turn actually starts and steer when your car is stable or to make your car stable in the turn. Wiggles used to be really important but now do little(except on the start on this seasons 14, pls do it it will get you like 2 seconds faster). In general, you dont want to steer up into turns or to steer down into turns, you want to time your release of the turn key/stick to enter the next part without adjustment(for the most part) (when mapping allow enough time to get into the next turn without oversteering over). Also buy club access to watch ghosts of top players on bob maps, because even as a bob entheusiast, the lines and input strats are random sometimes and sometimes a release tap of steering is faster for some reason or you enter late somewhere to gain more speed, etc. Another thing is sometimes it feels more random, and thats because to a certain extent it is. You gain so much by being going downhill while exiting, rather than on an upswing in the turn, which is almost just luck even for extremely good bobsleigh players. Go watch xEmlanx vid. Ok done now Essaying
    Disregard this message if there was another physics patch other than the 3rd iteration of ice physics(lol)

    • @nolafus
      @nolafus  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, the bobsled portion was written shortly after the physics update, and from what I was reading the top players were saying not much had changed in terms of driving strategy. I guess smoothsteering became the optimal strategy, but like you said, the entry is the most important part. I'll try to cover absolutely everything when I make a dedicated bobsled video ;)
      Great write up!

    @dani02_mmd 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Here are some other mapstyles that I think are worth noting for if someone finds a style not mentioned in the video and doesn't know what it is.
    1. SpeedFun.
    This is a style that died out in TM2020, but had and still has a presence in TMNF in TM2. It is very similar to FullSpeed, however there are some differences.
    The style is characterized by huge platforms with bluewalls around them and a focus on speed. But contrary to FS, the style has sharper turns, making avoiding autoslides and sometimes even releasing commonground. Basically, if you see a seemingly badly calculated FS map with simple scenery, it's FunSpeed :P. A very good way of learning to build FS maps for beginners.
    2. Formula 1 (Classic)
    Formula 1 maps are maps designed for Formula 1 servers, which used to be a staple of the TMNF community before dying a slow death. Luckily, it has been revived in TM2020. The maps always have a pit straight somewhere on the map, which you have to go into to not get a blackscreen. Other than that, the maps are built to look like real F1 maps, which means long straights, chicanes and not too many elevation changes. If you want to learn some mediatracker, and build a simple track around it, this is your way.
    3. FStunt
    My favorite style at the moment. Basically only existing in TMNF (please revive it in 2020), they are ridiculous FullSpeed maps with hard stunts in the middle. These stunt consist of flips or huge transitions using for example TMNF's big sculpture blocks. They are built to be ridiculously hard to finish and respawning is impossible. Great example is simo_900's E series; his maps Enterprise, Endgame and Eternity. I would recommend NOT to build as a beginner, as they are extremely hard to build.
    4. Grass / Bug
    Because grass is incredibly boring in TMNF, having no blocks built for it, grass in the classic sense means grassslides (or bugslides nowadays) only. It's what you expect from it. For the bug style, nosebugs are also included. If you look under the "Grass" tag on TMNF Exchange, all you'll find are those maps. As a beginner mapper it is better to spend your time elsewhere as you don't really learn anything from building them.
    5. Cut
    Intentional cut maps. Yes they do exist and they used to be super popular around 2017. A mapper would build a hard lolish trick, and than build a path that you would avoid using it.
    Also: When you join a lol server, you're not only gonna find only troll maps (although they are common), you will find a variety of different kinds of short maps. Here are some substyles that are all lol:
    - xxcc: very simple maps built around hitting a certain map weight: for example 500cc or 1000cc. They are usually techy short maps, but other than tech, jumps are common.
    - Kacky light: A map built around the simple premises mentioned in the video, but this time easy. What I like to build most.
    - Lucky: name says it all. This is the modern lol we all know and "love"

    New player here with 12 hours under my belt: switching from arrows to joystick when driving a Bobsled Map helped me by soooo much. I went surviving the entry and exit of the first corner from 1 out of dozens to 1 out of 5 to 10. The smoother steering made it way more easy to hold the car stable.
    Maybe that's another reason Bobsled is more liked on console even for the new players.

    I liked the video because you said you like ice, yes there's is very small amount of randomness on ice and bob, there's a reason and every slide out is possible to avoid. Bob also improved a bit after latest update for console players, keyboard is not the fastest anymore. With controller you can now do that smooth steering on bobs and beat those aks. That's why I think bob is getting more popular. On 14 this campaign on controller you just smooth steer to get the wr, however on kb you need to use many aks same time to get the same smooth steering as incase of 14 it's ak 1 and 4.
    1 for smooth steering and 4 for not dropping out of the bob as with full steer you nose would drop on the bob and you loose speed.

  • @wroomwroomboy123
    @wroomwroomboy123 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Map lengths. How things have changed lmao.
    *Long:* +1m 15s (If longer than the upper threshold of comp tech maps, it was just called long)
    *Short:* 35-50s (Less than normal comp, usually reserved or shorter cup tracks like TMM)
    *Mini:* 25-40s (Often overlapped in Short, if track was challenging it usually got the description fitting the longer term)
    *Tiny:* 15-25s
    *LOL:* Anything under 15s was just called a LOL map usually. Really short maps weren't really played.
    Then as TMNF and TM2 servers progressed, they migrated towards shorter and shorter tracks - while still maintaining the same descriptions on the servers. Now there are like 3 generations of TM players who use different words to describe the same things. Old timers, usually refer a short map to anything shorter than an ESL or ESWC track. And less than that is a mini. Likewise with tech. If a track is drifty, but not hard - old players won't really call it a tech map, because it isn't really technical lmao.

    • @nolafus
      @nolafus  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Is there a genre for "memory" maps or would they be included in RPG? I used to build a lot in Geometry Dash, where memory levels (levels with many fake paths and hidden gameplay, where the skill involves memorizing where you need to go) were popular.
    I'm imagining a map with some normal style (full speed maybe), but with intentionally bad visibility and some hard-to-see obstacles. The path itself wouldn't be difficult, the hard part is just remembering where to go while driving.

    weird how video length expectations work:
    * seeing the video: oh. ok, i guess i can stop if it's not interesting.
    * half way through: feels like video is soon over. oh, that was only half
    * end: whait it's already over? nooo
    nice video!
    only thing I (a noob) was missing (or not emphasized), on the transitional: add arrows/signs. (sorry in cas you said it and i missed it)

    • @nolafus
      @nolafus  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, signs and arrows can help a lot when going through the transitions the first few times, but the route shouldn't rely on them in order for the player to figure out what they should be doing, if that makes sense. A few signs can be very helpful, but too many can end up being the opposite!

    • @lePoMo
      @lePoMo 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nolafus what you start describing is what i would find interesting: when and where to place signs.
      as for only helping in first runs: yes. In fact the little TM I play (few days a year), it's always with friends on a fast paced map rotation. Once I remember where to go (lots of failing = takes time to get there), it's on to the next map ;p.
      And while I see the signs when searching for them, I don't have an intuition for where to look for them.
      A map building guide could give me the intuition I lack :). where to place them = where to look for them.

    So, I'm not sure if someone already mentioned this, but you mentioned being able to wiggle on plastic already at gear 3 unlike on grass and dirt and this is kind of inaccurate.
    On all 3 of these surfaces you are able to gain speed at speeds above 200 speed, which means you can do a couple wiggles before you gear up to 4th.

    Sausage for me is one of the worst, as a small mistake can lead to devastation instantly while Nascar, Fullspeed Tech etc. makes for a much smoother learningcurve.

    • @T3n50r
      @T3n50r 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Don't take my word for it as I'm not completely sure, but this is my understanding/history of it: For some reason a lot of French people have made absolutely horrendous maps. Forced cams that isn't favorable, annoying obstacles, bad transitions and blocks that doesn't line up well to create a difficulty which is weird on its own. It isn't particularly good or fun to play for most, just difficult for all the wrong reasons. I believe it stems from a couple of French servers back in the day that found this type of mapping kind of cool, and I guess some enjoy it. But a vast majority just... Don't. It isn't a compliment, that's for sure.
