I fully agree with your openion. There is no doubt that exceptional talent is a prerequisite for securing Noble prize. But...but that is not all..! Lobbying is the most vital factor. Rabindranat was a very lucky person. From his family connections he had a good access to British high society.

The only distraction was the interviewer... and we had been misled by the title... Sunil babu is quite realistic in this interview. Nothing to be worried about defamation of Gurudev. Different people will have different perspective and in this case the perspectives are quite outright. Viewers please don't make an issue regarding this misleading title. Tagore is Tagore that Sunil babu used to know... no place for scepticism...

Luck or coincidence plays an important part in our daily activities, and contributes to the success or failure of our efforts. This cannot be an argument for playing down Tagore's contribution or achievement in many fields.

Sunil Gangopadhyay claims Tagore was just lucky because of world's curiosity in Eastern Philosophy. This shows his moral bankruptcy, and his poor ethics. Sunil was an arrogant man and he did not have very good character, according to Taslima Nasreen.
I think, Sunil is not qualified enough to claim this. I have found half of his literature really lacking substance or being copied from other literature. His style of writing was not appealing enough to keep a reader engaged . He happens to capture the nature of a very limited generation of a certain time period in a sellable manner . Moreover the rapport with anadabazar group i.e. Ananda publishers and for his influence over several guilds , he has been able to create an influence . This may be one of the reasons why today's generation find him boring and unoriginal in thoughts but they definitely love rabindranath's short stories even after so many decades .
Couldn't agree more. One comment says that why should we compare Bengali literature with world literature. If we don't read world literature or compare Bengali literature with it then we would never produce world class writing. He says that there are better works written in Bengali. Utter BS. I wouldn't even compare it with classics. But Bengali literature couldn't even think of producing something like septology or Gravity's Rainbow or Books of Jacob. The last writers who tried to do something Avant garde were Akhtaruzzaman Elias, Kamal kumar mazumdar, Subimal Mishra and Sahidul Zahir. But none of them ever got mass appeal or popularity because they mostly ripped off western writers and an average Bengali reader hates anything that is even remotely challenging.

As far as u know Tagore got Noble for Geetanjali..so why this topic is being raised..Geetanjali was a collection of poems by Tagore..and during that time there was less competition..which now has increased in every profession.So it's very foolish to comment about the time when Tagore got Nobel.

Dump interviewer trying to show off intelligence which he doesn’t have. Sunil was a genius, a great fan of Tagore who understood and loved Tagore more than anyone who left their comments here. He has a point. No one really cares about Rabindranath outside Bengal. In Bengal, very few people actually understand Tagore. Most Bengalis are busy worshipping Tagore. At least Sunil took the challenge of getting out of Tagore’s influences. Sunil is the father of Bengali modernism in literature. One of his last interviews he said he came back to Tagore’s songs as an admirer.

I agree with Sunil. Tagore was lucky, he got the benefit from a convenient time when the west was interested in India and Indian culture. Also at that time, the British government was interested to provide some reparation for their colonial exploitation of Indian people through the form of reward (Nobel) and recognition (knighthood) to their loyal agents.
Sunil was an average writer. He used to punch beyond his weight. He once made unpleasant remarks against taslima Nasreen. He was jealous of her popularity.
Only a mediocre writer can think of denigrating another. Sunil Ganguli is a very entertaining writer. I immensely enjoy his books but if he can't appreciate the depth of Tagore he is either stupid or jealous. I strongly suspect the latter.

Fact: The English Gitanjali for which Tagore got the Nobel prize was entirely Tagore's own translation (and hence unsatisfactory). Yeats edited Tagore's English version, as he edited some of Tagore's subsequent English translations as well, till Tagore and Yeats fell apart and practically parted ways.

Moreover, he never compared himself with Tagore. Turkey might be known to people for long, but we all know these days you can't get any award without lobby. Not only Nobel, but Oscar too. It is a big world with lots of talented people, you can't give them all a Nobel prize. So it is easy for them to eliminate people through lobby. Doesn't mean people who are getting those prizes are less talented or people who are not getting are less deserving. They are trying to give it to deserving people from different region that's what he said.

I will hope, it's not same when a rabbit thinks no one is looking for him/her while hiding behind a small tree/bush. Though we are now very sincerely making effort for degradation of literature, that does not mean or that does not hint that earlier all was mean too. Point should be whether that was masterpiece was or not? I don't think even after 100+ years, if anyone dares to reach to that standard or quality, i mean poem and song! প্রথমত, আমি অন্তত জীবনে প্রথম একজনকে সিগারেট টানতে টানতে সাক্ষাৎকার দিতে দেখলাম। আর ব্যাপারটা একদমই ভালো লাগল না। চায়ের দোকানে বা মদের আসরের আড্ডার সাথে সাক্ষাৎকারের যে পার্থক্য আছে, তা অতি বিদগ্ধরা মাঝেমধ্যে ভুলে যান অথবা ভুলে যাওয়ার ভান করেন। যেন সাক্ষাৎকারটি ওনার কাছে নিতান্তই গুরুত্বহীন একটা ব্যাপার এবং সাক্ষাৎকার দিয়ে তিনি অনুগ্রহ করছেন। আর একটা কথা না বললেই নয়। সুনীল এবং তার সমমনোভাবাপন্ন সাহিত্যিকরা এবং তাদের ভক্তকুল মনে করে যে রবীন্দ্রনাথকে ছোট করে নিজেদের বড় করে দেখানো যায়। এরা ভালো সাহিত্যিক কিন্তু কখনই রবীন্দ্রনাথের মত কালজয়ী সাহিত্যিক নন। এদের সাহিত্য পড়ে ভালো লাগে, কিন্তু মননে সাড়া জাগায় না। রবীন্দ্রনাথকে ছোট করতে গিয়ে বাংলা সাহিত্যকে ছোট করতে ছাড়লেন না। ভারতীয় ইংরেজি ভাষার লেখকদের কথা বাদই দিলাম। নিজের লেখার সীমাবদ্ধতাকে উত্তীর্ণ করতে না পেরে এরা কবিগুরুকে সস্তার মদের আসরের আলোচ্য বিষয় বানিয়ে ফেলে। নোবেলের দোরগোড়ায় পৌঁছানোর অক্ষমতা এবং নিজেদের সাহিত্যকে নোবেল পাওয়ার উপযোগী মনে করার থেকে জন্ম নেওয়া হতাশা এবং হীনমন্যতা এদের প্রতিটা কথায় ফুটে ওঠে। শুনে হাসি পেল যে নোবেল কমিটি যে দেশ পুরস্কার পায়নি, সেরকম একটি দেশের সাহিত্যিককে পুরস্কারে ভূষিত করে। ভারত থেকে যেহেতু রবীন্দ্রনাথ নোবেল পেয়ে গেছেন, সে জন্য আর সুনীলের পাওয়া হল না। এরা বলে বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন প্রান্তে সাহিত্য সভায় যায়। একদমই বাজে কথা। বিদেশে কিছু স্তাবকের ঘাড় ভেঙে বিনা পয়সায় বিদেশি মদ সহযোগে ছুটি কাটানোকে এরা সাহিত্য আসর বলে। কে আর অত খবর রাখে। অতি নিচু মানসিকতার লোক সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়।

the guy who posted this video is looking for some cheap publicity, if you watch the entire clip you will find that Sunil was expressing his honest opinion. there was no reason why he/she should have titled the video in this fashion. May be Sunil Gangly rightly said that in 1912-1915 there was a interest in East, R.N.Tagore literature is so international beyond language. It is internationally acclaimed then and now in many countries. Many Universities have started Bengali as a literature course through Tagore Literature model. Because It touches some ones heart. I stays at US.Many areas ( remote cities) is aware of R.N Tagore. But they won't understand Sunil Ganguly in next 100 years though he has multiple time visited US.
Sunil's knowledge is very very poor. He was not able to answer against specific intelligent question of the interviewer because of his lack of outward knowledge.

Sunil Gangopadhyay is my own uncle (pishomoshai). That fact doesn't make me biased. However, this video title is totally misleading - apparently a clickbait. 5:50. A Bengali needs to watch through the 7 minutes. The word "just lucky" just isn't what he said.

সাক্ষাৎকার গ্রহণকারীর কথা অসংলগ্ন, প্রশ্নগুলো এলোমেলো, পরস্পর সম্পর্কবিহীন। 'বিশ্বসাহিত্যের প্রেক্ষিতে বাংলা সাহিত্যকে কিভাবে মূল্যায়ন করেন?' প্রশ্নটি করেই আবার একটা উটকো প্রশ্ন করে বসলেন যেটি আগের প্রশ্নটির সাথে কোনওভাবেই মেলে না। বিশ্বসাহিত্যের সাথে বাংলা সাহিত্যের তুলনাই বা দরকার কী? সাক্ষাৎকার গ্রহণকারী তড়িঘড়ি করে এ প্রসঙ্গ থেকে ও প্রসঙ্গে লাফিয়ে লাফিয়ে যাচ্ছেন। সুনীলের কাছে কিছু জানতে চাইছেন নাকি নিজেই সুনীলকে কিছু জানাতে চাইছেন? তার বালচাপল্য শ্রোতাদের বিরক্তি উৎপাদন না করে পারে না। আর এটাকে কি আড্ডা বলা যায়? সুনীল দাঁড়িয়ে কথা বলছেন বলে মনে হল। হয়তো যাচ্ছিলেন কোথাও। এমন সময় গায়ে-পড়া সাক্ষাৎকার গ্রহণকারীর ভুঁইফোঁড় উপস্থিতি ঘটে। সাহিত্যের প্রসঙ্গে পুরস্কারের কথাই বা কেন আসবে? সাহিত্যচর্চার সাথে তথাকথিত পুরস্কারের কোনও দূরতম সম্পর্কও থাকতে পারে না। সাহিত্যচর্চা সাহিত্যকর্মীর জীবনচর্চার অংশ। এটা তো পুরস্কার পাওয়ার কাজ নয়। যে-জীবন যাপনের অযোগ্য, যে-সত্য বিশাল লজ্জা আর নিরন্তর যন্ত্রণার উৎস, সেই জীবন আর সত্যের ছবি আঁকার অদম্য তাগিদ আর যন্ত্রণার্ত আবেগ থেকেই সাহিত্যিক লিখে যান। এখানে পুরস্কারপ্রাপ্তি দূরে থাক, তাঁর জীবন সংশয় হওয়ার সম্ভাবনাও যথেষ্ট। এটা সাহিত্যের আড্ডা নয়, রাস্তার মোড়ে দাঁড়িয়ে একধরনের খেজুরে আলাপ। যারা বাংলায় সাহিত্যচর্চা করেন, তাঁদের বিশ্বসাহিত্য নিয়ে ভাবার কোনও প্রয়োজন নেই, বাংলা ও বাঙালি সমাজ নিয়ে ভাবলেই তাঁদের লেখা ভাল হবে। রবীন্দ্রনাথ নোবেল পুরস্কার পাওয়ার জন্য লেখেন নি, লিখেছেন মনের তাগিদে। তাঁকে পশ্চিমা সমাজ পুরস্কার দিয়েছে বলে তিনি আমাদের কাছে বড় হয়ে যান নি, বরং তাঁর লেখার সৌন্দর্য, গভীরতা ও ব্যাপ্তিই তাঁকে আমাদের কাছে বড় করেছে। নোবেল না পেলেও তিনি আমাদের কাছে বড়ই থাকতেন। তাঁর লেখা পড়ে বোঝার ক্ষমতা যাদের আছে, তাদের সবার ক্ষেত্রেই এ কথা খাটে ।

I think, Sunil is not qualified enough to claim this. I have found half of his literature really lacking substance or being copied from other literature. His style of writing was not appealing enough to keep a reader engaged . He happens to capture the nature of a very limited generation of a certain time period in a sellable manner . Moreover the rapport with anadabazar group i.e. Ananda publishers and for his influence over several guilds , he has been able to create an influence . This may be one of the reasons why today's generation find him boring and unoriginal in thoughts but they definitely love rabindranath's short stories even after so many decades .

Couldn't agree more. One comment says that why should we compare Bengali literature with world literature. If we don't read world literature or compare Bengali literature with it then we would never produce world class writing. He says that there are better works written in Bengali. Utter BS. I wouldn't even compare it with classics. But Bengali literature couldn't even think of producing something like septology or Gravity's Rainbow or Books of Jacob.
The last writers who tried to do something Avant garde were Akhtaruzzaman Elias, Kamal kumar mazumdar, Subimal Mishra and Sahidul Zahir. But none of them ever got mass appeal or popularity because they mostly ripped off western writers and an average Bengali reader hates anything that is even remotely challenging.

Dump interviewer trying to show off intelligence which he doesn’t have. Sunil was a genius, a great fan of Tagore who understood and loved Tagore more than anyone who left their comments here. He has a point. No one really cares about Rabindranath outside Bengal. In Bengal, very few people actually understand Tagore. Most Bengalis are busy worshipping Tagore. At least Sunil took the challenge of getting out of Tagore’s influences. Sunil is the father of Bengali modernism in literature. One of his last interviews he said he came back to Tagore’s songs as an admirer.

I agree with Sunil. Tagore was lucky, he got the benefit from a convenient time when the west was interested in India and Indian culture. Also at that time, the British government was interested to provide some reparation for their colonial exploitation of Indian people through the form of reward (Nobel) and recognition (knighthood) to their loyal agents.
Sunil was an average writer. He used to punch beyond his weight. He once made unpleasant remarks against taslima Nasreen. He was jealous of her popularity.

Fact: The English Gitanjali for which Tagore got the Nobel prize was entirely Tagore's own translation (and hence unsatisfactory). Yeats edited Tagore's English version, as he edited some of Tagore's subsequent English translations as well, till Tagore and Yeats fell apart and practically parted ways.

I will hope, it's not same when a rabbit thinks no one is looking for him/her while hiding behind a small tree/bush. Though we are now very sincerely making effort for degradation of literature, that does not mean or that does not hint that earlier all was mean too. প্রথমত, আমি অন্তত জীবনে প্রথম একজনকে সিগারেট টানতে টানতে সাক্ষাৎকার দিতে দেখলাম। আর ব্যাপারটা একদমই ভালো লাগল না। চায়ের দোকানে বা মদের আসরের আড্ডার সাথে সাক্ষাৎকারের যে পার্থক্য আছে, তা অতি বিদগ্ধরা মাঝেমধ্যে ভুলে যান অথবা ভুলে যাওয়ার ভান করেন। যেন সাক্ষাৎকারটি ওনার কাছে নিতান্তই গুরুত্বহীন একটা ব্যাপার এবং সাক্ষাৎকার দিয়ে তিনি অনুগ্রহ করছেন। আর একটা কথা না বললেই নয়। সুনীল এবং তার সমমনোভাবাপন্ন সাহিত্যিকরা এবং তাদের ভক্তকুল মনে করে যে রবীন্দ্রনাথকে ছোট করে নিজেদের বড় করে দেখানো যায়। এরা ভালো সাহিত্যিক কিন্তু কখনই রবীন্দ্রনাথের মত কালজয়ী সাহিত্যিক নন। এদের সাহিত্য পড়ে ভালো লাগে, কিন্তু মননে সাড়া জাগায় না। রবীন্দ্রনাথকে ছোট করতে গিয়ে বাংলা সাহিত্যকে ছোট করতে ছাড়লেন না। ভারতীয় ইংরেজি ভাষার লেখকদের কথা বাদই দিলাম। নিজের লেখার সীমাবদ্ধতাকে উত্তীর্ণ করতে না পেরে এরা কবিগুরুকে সস্তার মদের আসরের আলোচ্য বিষয় বানিয়ে ফেলে। নোবেলের দোরগোড়ায় পৌঁছানোর অক্ষমতা এবং নিজেদের সাহিত্যকে নোবেল পাওয়ার উপযোগী মনে করার থেকে জন্ম নেওয়া হতাশা এবং হীনমন্যতা এদের প্রতিটা কথায় ফুটে ওঠে। শুনে হাসি পেল যে নোবেল কমিটি যে দেশ পুরস্কার পায়নি, সেরকম একটি দেশের সাহিত্যিককে পুরস্কারে ভূষিত করে। ভারত থেকে যেহেতু রবীন্দ্রনাথ নোবেল পেয়ে গেছেন, সে জন্য আর সুনীলের পাওয়া হল না। এরা বলে বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন প্রান্তে সাহিত্য সভায় যায়। একদমই বাজে কথা। বিদেশে কিছু স্তাবকের ঘাড় ভেঙে বিনা পয়সায় বিদেশি মদ সহযোগে ছুটি কাটানোকে এরা সাহিত্য আসর বলে। কে আর অত খবর রাখে। অতি নিচু মানসিকতার লোক সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়।

the guy who posted this video is looking for some cheap publicity, if you watch the entire clip you will find that Sunil was expressing his honest opinion. there was no reason why he/she should have titled the video in this fashion. Sunil did not say demeaning about Tagore. Watch the entire clip guys.
May be Sunil Gangly rightly said that in 1912-1915 there was a interest in East, R.N.Tagore literature is so international beyond language. It is internationally acclaimed then and now in many countries.
Many Universities have started Bengali as a literature course through Tagore Literature model.
Because It touches some ones heart.
I stays at US.Many areas ( remote cities) is aware of R.N Tagore.
But they won't understand Sunil Ganguly in next 100 years though he has multiple time visited US.
Sunil's knowledge is very very poor. He was not able to answer against specific intelligent question of the interviewer because of his lack of outward knowledge.
His knowledge was poor because he himself was very poor compared to Rabindranath, like he said. Otherwise he would also win the Nobel Prize.

Sunil Gangopadhyay is my own uncle (pishomoshai). That fact doesn't make me biased. However, this video title is totally misleading - apparently a clickbait. 5:50. A Bengali needs to watch through the 7 minutes. The word "just lucky" just isn't what he said.

and america has been following english literature. So proud for own language rather then english literature. If you believe in your creation . So definitely world will follow you. But you need strong lobby.
