    We have a CaseIH 8840 Windrower. Bought it at dairy farm total dispersal auction 2 years ago, without originally intending to. Went to the auction interested in their center-pull New Holland, but instead we came home with a freakin' self-propelled gem of a machine. Seriously, we bought it so cheap, it kinda felt like we stole it! She's powered by a Cummins 4 cylinder turbo diesel. It's 100 times better than any pull-type machine we've ever used or owned. Love that Deere you are running, but sure won't be able to afford one that nice and new any time soon.

    What is nice about the self propelled mowers as well is they allow you to free up a tractor in case you need the tractor someplace else.

      Or you buy another tractor at the same cost or less and use it for EVERYTHING and not just one purpose.

    Yes, those tires are popular in certain areas where soil is heavier with more moisture. The turf type is more popular here in central wa state as well as I'm sure in NM, AR, CA

    have you ever thought of putting a front linkage and pto on the 8235r, and using either a double or triple mounted mower set up. It's alot cheaper than a windrower plus it will make more use of the tractor. We have a triple john deere mower on a new holland T7.235 and it handles it really well power wise and our crop conditions would be similar to yours.

    Watching this close to 18 months later, I'm not at all surprised that this machine didn't get added to the fleet. Saving time is great, but so is saving money. The economics of the purchase "work" when you value your saved time highly enough to justify the payments. Some (OLF, for instance) can, but most can't. Maybe someday, when you have a larger beef herd to feed, it would make sense.

    • @turbodiesel4709
      @turbodiesel4709 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Self-propelled windrowers are more efficient and much more ergonomically friendly. If you've ever run one, you'd understand the first time you cut hay with it. If your farming operation can justify the expense, they are worth every-penny. Our operation can't justify the cost of new, but we bought a well-cared for used unit for dirt cheap at an auction a few years ago, and frankly, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

  • @pats4503
    @pats4503 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you plan on making high quality dry hay it may be hard with this machine. Cutting a 16' swath of thick alfalfa and bunching it into a windrow that is around 9' feet wide makes consistent drying nearly impossible, especially with Wisconsins humidity. If you buy that you might have to plan on getting a line-wrapper as well.

    With it being self propelled , how much does it add to the cost? Sure looked like it has more that can go wrong with it, lol. I was curious if when it comes to the bottom line the added expense can be justified. I can see some advantages with speed and keeping the cutting in front of you. Was just wondering if it penciled out in the end. Nice clip. !!

    • @ThePilotPenguin1
      @ThePilotPenguin1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, i prefer a trailer mower because with the self propelled one you are putting in a tank of diesel and leaving it sitting in a shed for most of the year. a tractor will always be used. the self propelled take up more space in the shed while a trailed mower can be tucked in the corner and stuff placed in front of it leaving no gaps. trailed is better

    A question from an interested but ignorant viewer - this is a wonderful machine (even though it looks like a backwards built tractor), do you have to cut the first row with manual steer so that the cut edge provides the point on which the auto steer recognises?

    • @turbodiesel4709
      @turbodiesel4709 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can tell from your comments that you are not from the USA. In the US, they don't use tractors with front mounted implements. Yeah, it's fucking stupid. Honestly, there's no other way to put it. No clue why we don't here, but we don't.
      Therefore, we have "dedicated" machines like these in order to do many tasks that could likely easily be done by machines that you guys in other countries have that hook up to and are powered from the front ends of your tractors.
      My guess is that self-propelled windrowers are not sold where you live because, just as you mentioned, they are a pointless waste compared to what you folks are currently using there on your tractors.
      If we had farm tractors here that could run a front-mounted hay header, we wouldn't need a machine such as this either.

    How come so many famers are complaining about the hay price and cost yet buy new equipment. There isn't a piece of equipment I use that is new. Everything is before 1975.

    • @HowFarmsWork

      +calvinfbrown Many farmers realize the value of time lost when using equipment that is broken down more often than it is running.

      If you've got enough acres to cover and enough hay to put up and sell, new machinery can pencil out... but we're talking a LOT of hay, particularly for a "one trick pony" machine like this. These things are NOT cheap.
      For the rest of us, you run the best you can and keep it fixed. Just because something's used doesn't mean it's that much more likely to break down... new equipment is SO overdesigned with electronic nonsense and SO overcomplicated it's just a matter of time before it breaks down... the more parts you have, the less reliable a thing is...
      Besides, I have yet to see the cow that gripes that you're baling their hay with too old of a machine... LOL:) (Buyers, OTOH... well... )
      Later! OL J R :)

      i understand differ regions may have different pricing for all models tractors, combines, etc. I was giving a rough estimate of what we were quoted on a W260 we had demoed last year. Although it was not a fully equipped model....... It was not a base model.

    EVER THOUGHT ABOUT A BUTTERFLY MOWER?

    • @niklas8413
      @niklas8413 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      boondockr87 same, much more Efficiency do to more *workwidth*
      and much less maintainence cost+ the whole combo costs less than these machines...

      reason for using these types of mower is that it also conditions the hay with rollers. Which reduces dry time, and cuts out one more pass with the tedder.

    and now you still have to row everything. i don´t really get the meaning of this machine. does prepare the mowed stuff somewhat special?

    • @MatthewHoag77
      @MatthewHoag77 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      For high volume hay producers, it saves time and fatigue by cutting the crop faster and directly in front of the operator rather than behind and to the side. For a smaller producer it probably doesn't make financial sense to purchase it, but for the ones making hundreds or thousands of acres of forage multiple times per year, it makes very good sense.

    • @Theorimlig
      @Theorimlig 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably just like a normal mower-conditioner. Some newer mowers, like you may know, can spread the mowed crop in windrows with adjustable widths. I wonder if this thing could do that?

    • @MatthewHoag77
      @MatthewHoag77 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheodorEriksson They most certainly can.

    • @greyghostkoga

      Raking (converging two or more rows) serves two main purposes. First, it aids in the finish drying process. Second, it reduces the run time (hours) on the baler. Every second a baler is running equates to wear and tear on a high dollar piece of equipment. Rakes are cheap, and the fuel and tractor run time are negligible, as it doesn't take a whole lot to pull a rake.
